Star Trek: Mudd's Women (1966)
Harry Mudd makes for a fun episode.
Harry Mudd is one of those classic Star Trek characters we love to hate. Like Cereno Jones, and Q, he makes for a great foil for Star Ship captains. The interaction at the end of the episode between McCoy, Spock, and Kirk is classic Trek and one of the best endings of any of the shows, especially the camera work as the Enterprise breaks orbit. Of course, some will naturally criticize this episode because of the 60's social mores and the 60's view of the relationship between men and women. That all needs to be put in perspective and should not used a sole reason not to watch or enjoy the episode.
Star Trek: A Taste of Armageddon (1967)
One of the better episodes
'A Taste of Armageddon' is one of the better episodes for several reasons. The premise of a 500 year old war being fought by computers is intriguing and a society where citizens have been raised to voluntarily commit suicide is disturbing. Ambassador Fox is the perfect bureaucrat everyone loves to hate. Captain Kirk is particularly good in this episode and the writing is excellent. There is great chemistry between Kirk and Spock. The scene where Spock and the security team break into the control room to assist Kirk only to find that he has already subdued an entire room is great fun. This is also one of those episodes where Scotty plays a pivotal role and has some of his most memorable lines.
Star Trek: Elaan of Troyius (1968)
One of the better one from season 3 episodes
This episode has everything: Klingons, romance, space battles, intrigue, and humor. I would particularly recommend the digitally enhance version for the exterior shots of the Klingon battle cruiser. The episode strongly suggests that Kirk had a sexual encounter with the Dolman, which adds a layer of realism. It's also an original episodes that is referenced in the Next Generation episode 'Relics'. The pacing of the episode is excellent, especially after the slow pacing of the preceding episode, 'The Empath'. The end of the show, where Kirk outwits the Klingons, is classic Trek. Also, the 'antidote' Kirk finds is perfect. Some may not like the '60's sexual' mores, but that is no reason not to like this episode.
Star Trek: The Empath (1968)
One of the stranger episodes
The 'Empath' is definitely one of the more stranger episodes of Star Trek. At times, it is very disturbing, and at others times, somewhat boring. There is always great chemistry when Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are together; and they are together throughout the episode. Kirk's message to the Aliens toward the end of the episode about how they have lost the capacity for compassion is classic Trek. The actress who plays 'Jem', does an adequate job, but, after a while, the character becomes somewhat monotonous and you find yourself hoping they resolve the conflict so the show will end. There are definitely better episodes.
Star Trek: The Alternative Factor (1967)
Not the best, except for Lt. Charlene Masters.
Overall a slow and, at times, confusing episode. There is good chemistry between Kirk and Spock and the subspace conversation between Kirk and the commodore was cool. . There is also cool little 'timeship' used by Lazerious. The best part of this episode is Lt Charlene Masters. I wish they could have used her as a recurring character. She did not only do a great job of acting, she seemed like a interesting character that would have added more diversity to the crew. It should be noted that after this episode aired (considered by many to be the worst one is season 1), 'The City on the Edge of Forever' was aired. So , they made up for it.
Rawhide: Incident of the New Start (1961)
Wing Ding
Overall a good episode, even if it was a little predictable. Dehner is a great character actor who appeared in almost every Western, as well as, most other TV shows in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Eastwood is particularly good in this episode. There is one very disturbing scene where they have to shoot 50 steers who got bogged down. I'm sure PETA would have an issue with they scene is it was done today. Definitely it was a different era, both in Wild West and in TC. One inaccuracy that occurs in the show is when Dehner uses the term 'Wing Ding' to describe a dance. The term originated in 1927 with hobos.
