We Are the Strange (2007)
Really Bad Acid
This movie is surreal; this movie is disturbing; this movie is fascinating. As a piece of cinema, it's terrible. Most audiences simply could not sit through something like this in a dark room with a big screen.
As art, I'd say this film is a success. It is extremely unique, and in it's own low-budget way very well done. I have never seen a film before this that combines such diverse graphic art into a visual whole. The visual and audio effects are rather hypnotizing, though not in a good way.
"We Are the Strange" is aptly named, and very hard to like. It is largely incohesive, though there is some semblance of plot. The images and sounds are fairly unpleasant, and after about ten minutes you get the first urges to turn it off. I appreciate this as a unique and powerful art film, but I don't find it entertaining.
AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007)
A sad chapter in an otherwise good tale
Let me begin by saying that I am definitely a fan of the Alien/Predator series of films. While the concept might not be anything new, these films have that James Bond- familiar character appeal.
Requiem, however, has seriously lowered my opinion of this series. Poor acting, cliché slasher-flick tactics, and weak writing have turned this movie into yet another forgettable sequel.
I still believe that fresh, original vision can turn the idea around, but I strongly recommend that fans of the series avoid this train-wreck of a film. It's few redeeming moments hold only a shadow of the idea's original, spine-tingling power, and overall will leave you disappointed and angry about spending your money on it.
August Underground's Mordum (2003)
Absolutely Terrible
I will try to write this view as objectively as possible, because I realize that there are some people who find this kind of torture/mutilation/rape film amusing.
Rating by plot, creativity, and camera work, this movie was horrible. Yet another twisted 70 minutes of hand-held blurriness and screaming, to add to a long list of low-budget slasher flicks.
The film deserves some credit for sheer effect. In a world where movies like Saw and Hostel are considered fairly light viewing by American horror fans, 'August Underground's Mordum' still manages to hit you deep in the gut.
If you are a normal human being without any noticeable homicidal or necrophiliac tendencies, this movie probably isn't for you, and unless you want them scarred for life, not for your children.
