Night Court (2023)
Alright, let's talk.
Look, I have been watching Court since it started. I have watched every season since '84. And to be honest, I went in with a negative attitude. However, after seeing the very first episode of season one I found myself brought back in. I was brought back in by the silly humor and just how ridiculous the humor of Night Court was. Is it the same? No. You can't be. In today's day, the original Night Court would never have been made because of the softness of our society but this at least tries to come close to the craziness of what it once was. Look, anyone who truly trashes this was never a Night Court fan and I wouldn't be surprised if they had never watched an original episode. This show stays true to the concept of the first. It does falter but it tries and the effort is worth it. You people today are so spoiled.
The Dessert (2023)
What is going on?
So, I grew up in Canada with "The Kids" as well as "Four" and the like. As I grew older I also became accustom to other sketches such as Mr. Show. This show, in my opinion takes all the worst of shows such as Kids in the Hall, Four on the Floor and Mr. Show and amplifies them. This show, again to me, is the pivot point in dark humor and I love every moment of it. It's taken an old baton that has been long dropped, picked it up and started to run with it again. I have missed this type of humor for so long. Is this for everyone? Not in the least. Is it for those who have a twisted sense of humor? Oh absolutely. Thank you for this. I haven't laughed like this in a long, long time.
Fast X (2023)
He pulled it...
Look, this is a Fast and Furious film. If you expect some kind of enlightened awareness or actual plot and character building, nuh-uh. You want substance with action, watch Sisu. You want charcter arc, watch Nefarious. If you want mindless action with just, midless action, watch Fast X. The movie is not horrible. It delivers exactly what it's predecessors did (aside from the first film, which I found unique at the time). This franchise has been built on escapism and spectacle. It's a franchise that only requires you to watch and be visually entertained. A franchise of films that does not expect you to think but to simply be entertained. It's turned out to be a great formula obviously given it's longevity. Thus, Fast X isn't horrible. It's just simple entertainment and it knows this and that's the point. Sometimes it's just nice to watch a film that you can just watch and not think. Stallone did it, Van Damme Did it and so on. Action films are like a nice cheat day while trying to eat healthy. The only fish out of water in this film is Jason Mamoa. In my opinion, he stole this movie. He pulled the Joker card and it paid off for him. Some say he was too much but I say he could have done even more. He did a wonderful job of playing over the top which is why I give this movie a seven instead of a five. Two stars for Mamoa. In closing, this film is not awful. You want awful? Watch Marvel. At least this film is honest in what it is.
The Menu (2022)
Aaaalright.
I have read other reviews. I didn't want to but against my better judgement I did and to be frank, I find a lot of reviews just lazy and coming from people who don't watch film. Sure, they see film but they don't watch it. Unfortunately the modern audience has succumb to eyeball popcorn and disregard art. Which this film is pointing out and which these "critics" are complaining about. To give this film anything below a five means that critic is a marvel fan. I look at this film as a throw back when writing was an important drive behind a film and actors had to match the writing with their performance. This movie was very, very well written, the direction was great and the acting was spot. However, this film was made for people who actually think so I can see why some reviews are childish. Nah, this movie is worth any intelligent persons time.
Still (2023)
A master class in stoic fragility.
Firstly, I gave this a nine simply because it's not Evil Dead 2 but that being said, wow. I have watched this mans career flourish since I was a boy. From his early commercials to his film success. He always had that charisma, that allure as an actor. On screen he just had it in my opinion. My favorite movie from this man is Doc Hollywood to be honest. Not Back to the Future or Casualties Of War or Teen Wolf. It was Doc Hollywood for it's common simplicity and innocence. Now, getting that out of the way, this film. This film was eye opening, heartbreaking, joyful and so many other emotions wrapped in. Watching this was a stark reminder of the power of will. I struggle with a disease myself and some days it seems that it would be easier to just give up but I know I can't for my family. This film is a testament to an endurance and a struggle with pride as a man in my opinion. This film also highlights the importance of family and how important their support truly is. Especially in the darkest of moments. I have never idolized actors but Michael J Fox deserves some recognition. Canadian treasure to be certain. Great film.
Sisu (2022)
Very Enjoyable
The movie was done as it should be. I actually did a review just previous but for some reason it didn't post. Now, I have watched movies for a very long time. I have probably seen more than most. Hell, my collection in in the thousands and I am not rich. Passion. This film is very well done. The direction, the acting, the cinematography...very good. I was so impressed by how they made this movie. Simple, to the point and so entertaining. I am watching this movie again. In all honesty, a couple of times. This is John Wick during WW2. Just a simple action movie where you can just simply cheer for a hero. It's not complicated, it's just fun.
Chupa (2023)
Brought me back
As a child from the 70s and 80s, this movie brought me back there. This movie reminded me of what kids movies should be. No agenda. No politics. Just fun. This movie reminded me of what watching movies as a kid was like and should be like. I watched this movie with my 11 year old daughter and she has never watched a movie with me since she was born. However, to night, we watched this together. Just us and we laughed together. Not only did this movie remind me of the lost innocence of a culture, it reminded me of the importance of just enjoying something with your kid. Is this movie great? No. Is it worth it? Absolutely. It's written like it came from a kid from the 80's and I appreciate it very much. Thank you and I mean that.
