Chain Reaction (1996)
Boring dated typical run & chase 90s film
Save yourself some time and just watch The Fugitive it is much better if you are after a classic 90s run & chase movie. This was just Boring boring boring, the most 0 substance vanilla script, 0 character development. The only redeeming qualities of the films are some of the stunts, it's a very dated 90s movie and there is nothing stand out about it, feels like every other generic late night action movie on TV that's been long forgotten about for good reason. The plot is predictable and there is nothing enticing about the film at all, don't let the big cast fool you, you will definitely be disappointed.
Mister Organ (2022)
A self aware documentary that failed? It works
Almost like a slightly more aggressive, less passive Louis Theroux, Farrier delves into the story of an abusive manipulator, halfway through I enjoyed the fact that he was self aware of what he had gotten himself in to, did this bizarre man's mundane fabricated stories and rambling warrant a documentary? Maybe not, but it was still fascinating. I enjoyed watching the process of even the creator David himself getting sunk into Mister Organs draining presence and creepy passive aggressive threats.
I wondered at times where the documentary would conclude, it felt lost at times. I do think this story would have had a more profound message to the audience if it explained and explored more the details of the damage to these other people who had crossed paths with Mister Organ in the past, however it sort of brushed over these leaving you to wonder how traumatising the effects of this manipulative man were.
The last 20 minutes of the film wrapped the story up very well, if you enjoy Louis Theroux then you will enjoy this.
Finding Michael (2023)
Absolutely awful. So superficial
The word is so overused but this documentary is straight up cringe. Crocodile tears all over, it is so insensitive and tone deaf it's almost feels like a satire. Did this man seriously think they would find a body on Everest over 2 decades after he went missing, arrives in base camp and finds out instantly after a 5 minute meeting that the body is definitely not his brother, surely they would have done more research before planning this whole thing? Quick everyone search the dead bodies for a Rolex that'll be my brother!
I almost turned it off when later on he goes to the family of a Sherpa who died on the mountain only to say so we will only rescue your brothers body if we don't find mine first, just ridiculously tone deaf.
It gets 2 stars for the cinematography, a lot of great drone shots.
L'immortale (2019)
A prequel to the finale of Gomorra
Sure, I don't believe it is anywhere near the calibre of the series. But it is definitely and enjoyable movie, perhaps a little long and drawn out with a simplistic plot but it provides a great Prologue to season 5 of Gomorra. Recommended to fans of the series, however if I watched as a standalone film without knowledge of the tv show I would probably not think it's any good. It is directed beautifully and has a great orchestra take on the original soundtrack. The acting is superb and the flashback scenes provide a look into Ciros childhood and the story of how he came about to his nick name 'The Immortal'. A masterpiece? No. A movie worth your time? Yes, enjoy.
