Sons of Anarchy: Playing with Monsters (2014)
So far I'm disappointed in Season 7 and the way Jax's character is portrayed...
3 episodes into S7 is leaving me wondering if this is all there is for the carefully built up Jax character. I hope not!
So far Jax has completely changed his vision for the club & his life! To me that desire was what kept it really interesting to watch. It's nothing but killing at the moment...It was that before but there was something that was in the story that could keep it from becoming just another show about only killing for money. And no I don't see this as just revenge on Jax's part... He is lost imo! And the ever reasonable Bobby Elvis who normally was the centered one that made sense in the bunch, is suddenly agreeing with all of this?
Jax has tried very hard to ease away from the mamma's boy he was before in the earliest episodes to becoming something his father would certainly approve of and to see his father vision through as a sort of savior for the club to get out of the criminal business....
Also the lack of continuum from earlier story lines ( the school shooting )is irritating me. Have they all but forgotten that as it still was a major storyline last season!
I want to see it through to the end and am secretly hoping for some changes. Changes that would leave us as viewers at least a little satisfied, not frustrated at the "lack" of what this show was before.
The Knick (2014)
Absolutely great TV and worth the watch
Since the first episode I am hooked. Watching drama unfold in a time that we ( at least I am ) are glad we weren't alive in or even more glad not to be sick in!
In the first few minutes of each episode I watched, ( 4 so far ) I either react in disgust or in awe at the scenes we get to see. The cinematography is excellent although some might not be a fan of the way the camera angles are shown. Special effects are amazing, image in first few minutes of episode 3 comes to mind as you get first side view / frontal view of the female patient...
The feel that comes across watching the streets of NY at that time period with horse & carriages and costumes is real authentic. The attention to the medical side of things is amazing and maybe my most favourite part of the show. The research going into these scenes must have been real hard work and nothing but credit goes to those departments / people involved. Having seen images from that era and how they replicated wards/ treatments for the show is worth the watch alone!
The acting is wonderful and I already am looking forward to watching certain story lines develop. The scene with Thackery getting his cocaine shot in that special place from Nurse Elkins, is one that was very believable on Clive Owen's part. The shaking and his facial expressions in that moment are awesome to watch!
At times I really have to bite my tongue, but it's how people were treated at that time. If you have a weak stomach you might not like some of the more gruelling scenes, but I guess they come pretty close to how things were done without proper anaesthesia and operating tools. In that way the show is educational as well.
Each time the hour has passed I wished it would be longer and I long for the next episode. Glad it was renewed for a second season even before the 1 st episode officially aired. Soderbergh at his best!
You won't regret giving this show a chance :-) You will get hooked.
The Fifth Estate (2013)
It cleared up some questions I had
Went to see this yesterday & came out of the cinema with some things clearer & some questions still unanswered. Keeping in mind that this is a dramatisation of the book by Daniel Domscheit-Berg, I think it turned out good and not by any means, quoted an "Anti WikiLeaks" movie by Assange himself. It tries to give a clearer explanation about what he wanted WikiLeaks to be or do in today's world.
IMO they succeeded in that department. The story is highly complicated in real life & the movie only touches on several important leaks that were big stories when they broke.had hoped they would have touched a bit more on several stories though...Especially the Reuter's footage is an example of material that was devastating when watched again as I remember it being broadcast on TV back then. It truly is news the world needs to know in order to have people answer for the horrific stuff that goes on in the world without us knowing & even the victims family being told untrue facts! Some of the comments during that footage is really damaging & unbelievable.
Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing as it truly is like he inhibited the Assange character completely. He was completely believable as Assange to me with the very skilled help of the hair & make up department. Daniel Brühl delivers another worthy portrayal that is very committed & believable. At one point in the movie both sides ( as their views start to clash about what transparency should be ) make a lot of sense, which makes it difficult to take sides...there are still 2 sides to the story and as it seems it's not all black/ white.
The story may have been taken from the viewpoint of Domscheit & therefore have an altered view of how Assange "changed" in his own view towards what WiliLeaks should stand for. He is seen as a bit of a madman at the end of the movie which I'm not entirely sure is the whole picture. Until the end he kept true to his word that WikiLeaks will never redact articles... Security for the individual and Transparency for institutions I agree with, IF it doesn't cost the people ie. informants involved their lives. It was a touching moment realising Assange has lost friends in this himself that believed in the cause. I came out of the cinema, seeing pro's in WikiLeaks work. Like is said in the ending scenes: "If you want the truth, you should seek it out for yourself. That's what they're afraid off, You"! You are the fifth estate.
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Really enjoyable movie
Went to see this yesterday and had a great time watching this. It was great to see a bit more of Asgard this time around although would have also loved some more of the rest of the realms itself. Loved that they showed Vanaheim in the beginning. Lots of humour already right from the start of the movie & that continued throughout the movie. Gripping one liners & nice little surprises like the "Captain America" appearance, which had the room bursting out with laughter yesterday. Also loved the insight we got into Loki's soul after what happened to Frigga. It gave the character more depth & explains why he does end up siding with Thor after all.
They all did a brilliant job on the fight sequences, loved watching those as they weren't extremely long. Great CGI stuff although a bit obvious when they had to do close ups. It's shot in a darker light ( if that makes sense ) but I liked that bit as the movie tone is set in a darker mood. The chemistry between Jane & Thor was better compared to the 1 st movie IMO. I believe Hemsworth was a better Thor as he had to grow into his character in the 1st movie, whereas Hiddleston owned the Loki character from the 1st minute he put on the horns. At least that is how I perceived it. Heimdall was awesome & I liked that he got more screen time this movie. Was expecting more from Malekith movie wise, missed some of that darkness that really started of this war..
Tom Hiddleston as Loki however stole the show as Hiddleston has embraced this character completely & is totally in touch with how Loki should be portrayed.
The ending made me grin as I had a serious "Hell No!" Moment at a certain point in the movie, just sitting in my seat shaking my head in disbelief...but I shouldn't have worried really.
Worth the wait & looking forward to seeing the next instalment!
