Iron Man (2008)
A marvel of a film
Iron Man is one of the most fun films you will ever see in your life. This is the origin of the character. There is only four action sequences in the film but you will not care because of Robert Downey J.R.'s fantastic performance as Tony Stark, the man behind the Iron Man suit. Although this is a big budget superhero film, it feels more like a character-driven dramedy. That is not a bad thing. The film never lets the action and spectacle take over. It has a heart and soul. The music is heavy metal themed and works with the character. The film is also set on the west coast, giving us a great change of pace from the New York superheroes. After the credits, there is a cool scene that sets up the Avengers film. The only problem I have is that the real villain only has one scene at the end. Other than that, this is a good film.
Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs (2008)
Just an o.k. movie
Let's get this straight:I liked Bender's Big Score. It had an emotional and complex story, but not a lot of laughs. Nows the first half of this film(since this is an 88 minute film (minus the one minute credits) I'm talking about the first 44)was really funny. I really liked Zap's Fungal infection and the guards at the white house. Calculon's penis joke was also good. But then came some mistakes: Fry falling in love with Colleen. Really random after all Fry and Leela have been through. At the end Leela gets mad at how Fry just forgot about her. Then there's Yivo, the monster invading Earth. This is when the film loses a lot of its humor. I thought with the tentacles there would be a lot of raunchy jokes.Early reviews said this was to be the raunchiest futurama ever. With the exception of the jokes in the beginning, I was really disappointed. The next film doesn't look too promising, but I just have to wait and see.
Spider-Man (2002)
spider-man review.
This is just a good Spider-Man film. There is nothing amazing about. It is an origin story so it does move a little slow. But Spidey's origin has always been a multi step process.Although details are changed a lot, Peter's first love is Mj, the name of the wrestler is changed, the webs are organic etc., the script mostly understood the characters. There is a lot of development to them. They are all well-defined. Although this is probably the least dramatic of the spider films, it doesn't have any fun with itself. When Peter enters the suit, he is supposed to be a wise-cracking, fun loving guy. He doesn't change at all. He just mumbles and mopes around. Tobey Maigure gives a wooden performance as Peter Parker/ Spider-man. That is my only real complaint.
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
The Increbile Hulk
As you know, this is not a sequel to 2003's Hulk. It is a much more entertaining film. It is faster moving and more action based than the first one. The three main action sequences are: 1. A chase through a bottle factory 2. A attack at a university and 3. A grand battle between Hulk and the abomination. Other than those sequences, there is not much to recommend. Although the actors are fine, nothing exciting happens when Banner is just Banner. This is the opposite of Marvel's last film Iron Man where the down to earth guy was more entertaining than the hero. Hulk has a paper thin storyline and never really takes itself seriously. It just feels like setup for Marvel's Avengers Projects. P.S.: The Hulk speaks!
Hulk (2003)
Hulk Review
This is an anti-blockbuster. From the outside, it looks like a big cgi fest. I kind of wish it was. This is what happens when you get an art-house director to direct a comic book film. Now I love comic books (Ultimate Spider-Man is my favorite)but there needs to be some fun in them. When Ang Lee was offered this, he was probably worried that people would think he would be selling out by making a silly action film. So the film had to be made as serious and deep as possible. So he got three screenwriters to create a mess. Ang, it's the Hulk. Yes it should have some emotion, but people paid to see HULK SMASH, not hulk, let's talk about our feelings so we can control the beast inside. This has always been a hard film to watch (and this is from a guy who watched Once upon a time in the west and loved it.)
