The Deep (2015)
For All Ages
I am definitely far above the target age of this show, but I absolutely loved it nonetheless. To put it simply, there is no other show quite like this one. Educational kids shows usually put me off by shoving the 'education' aspect into the middle of the storyline, yet this show does it flawlessly. All the while, it sends an excellent message about the importance of taking care of our planet.
The storyline itself has in incredibly compelling lore, and every season ended with a hook that left me longing for another episode. Each and every character was distinct, complex, and they continued to develop throughout the series. I particularly enjoying watching the shift in relationships and interactions between characters (especially fontaine and finn ✨).
This is one of few series that I have been able to enjoy despite moving past my younger years, and I sincerely hope they will renew it for a season 5 sometime this year!
Shadow and Bone (2021)
Here for the Crows
As someone who read the entire grishaverse series, I loved seeing it come to life on screen. That said, I often found myself skipping over the shadow and bone plot to watch the crows' shenanigans. The SoC actors had amazing chemistry and they had so many comedic moments that genuinely made me laugh out loud. Kit in particular was perfect for Jesper's character, and it made me SO happy to see Amita portray Inej as an indian actor; the representation means a lot.
This may just be a reflection of the fact that I enjoyed the SoC books far more than the shadow and bone trilogy, but I felt that Mal and Alina's plot was a tad boring, and I didn't feel like their characters had much of a connection.
As much as I want a dedicated six of crows show, I think their choice to merge the two series still created a unique storyline for the book fans to enjoy with fresh eyes. It was fun seeing the crows and the shadow and bone characters interact, which didn't take place in the books.
Lockwood & Co. (2023)
absolutely loved it
This show was one of the best netflix originals I've seen in a LONG time, I was expecting the ratings to be a lot higher...
The atmosphere of the sets were incredibly immersive and the acting was phenomenal. A lot of tv-14 netflix shows focus so much on romance and drama while the storyline is lackluster. This show on the other hand does a fantastic job of executing both. The romance is slow and realistic, but it isn't the focus of the story.
While the premise of the plot seems similar to ghostbuster type shows, this world felt like a separate universe with an identity of its own. The rules and history of the problem didn't feel super unrealistic/childish, and every episode had me hooked.
I think the main reason I loved this show was because of the actors. I've seen far too many teen dramas where the actors seem fake as unrealistic teen kids. Despite the maturity of the characters, the actors still make them feel like realistic teenagers. Not to mention, I'm a sucker for a good "found family" trope.
Overall I though Lockwood and Co was far more entertaining than Wednesday Adams or any other recent Netflix originals.
