Halo: Onyx (2024)
Unbelievably entertaining
I'm a huge fan of bungie, first person shooter video games, and the entire Halo series in general. This show has proven to be way way more than I ever even imagined. Although I know the storyline quite well, including all the intricate lore involved.
Yet, every week I'm on the edge of my seat- literally, biting my nails to see what's going to happen next. And it just keeps getting better and better with each subsequent episode. It's hard to ask more from any television program. Although it began a bit slow in early season 1, I am glad I watched until like episode 3- then it's just steadily escalated in my opinion. Now I truly look forward to coming home from work on Thursdays more than any other day because that means new episode! Overall the visual quality, performances and storytelling are just outstanding.
I know Halo the games quite well, so I was honestly not expecting much beyond gussied up cutscenes and game cinematics- worth checking out at least (I thought) but this is an entity unto itself that anyone can appreciate without ever having picked up a game controller in their life (or used mouse and keyboard to play). Brilliant television on every level. Sci fi folks love The Expanse- as do I. This series can match that level of quality blow for blow- I honestly can't give either the edge right now.
The one and only thing I Hate is- I have to wait another week for more.
Invasion (2021)
They must have fired the writers of Season 1- it was utter garbage
But, season 2 has been consistently entertaining. I would recommend anyone remotely interested in this program to skip straight to Season 2. Frankly, season was sooo bad, I was surprised to see it was renewed.
Even more surprised to see it has become an interesting, well written and and compelling show- fully unexpected.
Just saying don't write it off, despite the downright painfully awful first season. The second season is actually some good television.
I refuse to offer spoilers on a any level or at any point for any content.
Season is 1 would be ten thumbs down from me. Utterly worthless and poorly written trash on sooo many levels- literally on all levels
But somehow the powers that be turned this painful train wreck into an interesting show worth watching in season 2.
Full Circle (2023)
Excellent cast but poor direction
Steven Soderbergh is a one trick pony. Flashy camera angles and cuts with little substance. I'm so beyond tired of the "immersive" style of shaky camera footage that it truly makes me nauseous. Literally. The camera work in this show makes me incredibly nauseous- it's not avant garde anymore bro- it's just painful. On every level. I've watched every episode thus far just to be fair.
The story is not terrible. I can acknowledge that. But it is not rendered well.
Outstanding actors across the board and a well renowned director- one would assume a smash hit.
But one would be very wrong to assume. The story plays like recycled garbage and the camera work is despicable- truly hard to watch without vomiting- honestly. It has been a Painful slog just to view this mess.
I imagine the cinematography department voiced objections- if they have a conscience. But it fits the director's style, so I imagine any objections were not well received.
Tldr: decent story with excellent actors Wasting their time with a one note "super star" director. So painful to watch I feel compelled to write this review.
Silo: Outside (2023)
Outstanding show overall
It's been quite awhile since I've watched a show that truly keeps me on the edge of my seat. Silo more than delivers on every single level. Perhaps not suited to everyone's taste- but perfectly suited to mine. I want more Now.
I understand that not everyone likes post apocalyptic mysteries, but if you do this show will blow you aeay. Outstanding performances by incredible actors- excellent cinematography, great writing. All of it. The total package.
Not every single episode has wowed me- there are definitely some lulls in the narrative and the love story between George and Juliette does become tiresome.
But the overall story has me fully hooked and desperately wanting more.
Devs (2020)
Great story. Worth watching but terrible casting
I thoroughly enjoyed the show. It has many interesting concepts and is pretty well executed l. But, the cast is universally unattractive. Perhaps I'm just super shallow.
I have actually thought long and hard about this issue- why such a rich product was/is largely ignored- the best answer I can devise is the characters themselves.
Most of the characters were not fully developed, so it's hard to become invested in them. But this also may be the ugliest cast of a television show in all of history. I think it's because not one character is remotely attractive. Ugliest cast in history. I'm not saying it's right, but it was hard to get invested in ugly people.
Perhaps it was just me who cringed at the sight of pretty much every single actor. But I would wager I am not.
Fair or not, it's hard to become invested in the fate of ugly people. Ugliest cast Ever. Unfair that such a thing could influence one's opinion about a work of art, but I believe it does.
Interesting show but not fun to watch because I don't like seeing ugly people on television, to be honest.
