Needful Things (1993)
Sinister, smart and still modern
I don't understand the bad rating - this movie is amazing! I've seen it about three or four times now and I always discover something new. The actors are amazing and it's just not your typical horror film where you can predict every single action. The way people can get torn and twisted into things they actually "would never do" is displayed perfectly. Also - it can be seen as an allegory to modern day social media, hate speech and culture wars. Things can start harmless and fall completely out of proportion during a course of time just because people are ready to believe lies they are being fed.
If anyone wants to understand what hate speech and a lack of community can do to people, I would recommend them to watch this film.
It's not a 10/10 film, more 8/10 but I want it to go up from the 6.3 rating that it doesn't deserve.
The Ninth Gate (1999)
Like a calm, dark, beautiful fairy tale
I never understood why this film was so badly rated. Sure - it's not a masterpiece, but it's a solid, good film if you're looking for something mysterious and dark with beautiful aesthetics and symbolism.
The actors are great as well - their acting as well as their appearance. They embody their characters and to me, this film is like a dark fairy-tale. Nothing to believable but entertaining to watch.
It's also not too overbearing which I like. It's a solid film and it takes its time (not boring but not as fast-paced as a lot of the movies are that are coming out right now).
This film unfolds its beauty in a calm way and I'd definitely recommend others to watch it!
Killing Eve (2018)
One of the best series ever (apart from the last 5 minutes of the last episode)
Gosh - that series. It's just beyond good. The character building, the relationships, decisions that you make and then nothing being sure if they are the correct ones but you also don't want to go back to your old life because your new decisions make your life much more interesting. The struggle between living a safe life and an exciting life... and many many more topics are being told in this excellent show.
The producer also said in an interview "this isn't a spy-story. It's a story about relationships." And that's what it truly is.
A lot of people didn't like the 3rd and the 4th season but I kind of enjoyed it as well. It seemed believable to me.
But... the last 5 minutes of the final episode just threw everything overboard (literally...)
I don't want to write any spoilers but... it just left me empty. It seemed rushed and it didn't wrap up the story whatsoever. I didn't even feel particulary sad or happy or... anything because... it just seemed to strange and out of place.
Just didn't make sense for me unfortunately. The whole series is ruined by the last 5 minutes. I wish I hadn't seen it. No clarification whatsoever, nothing. It feels like a betrayal and it was so disappointing. It also was a betrayal to the characters themselves. It didn't make any sense at all.
When the words THE END were on screen I just sat there, audibly saying "What???".
Seriously - don't watch the last 5 minutes of the last episode of the last season. Everything is good until then. Turn off when you're about 5 minutes from the ending. That's good enough. Turn off when Villanelle says "I did it, Eve". That would have made a more okay (not good but still okay) ending.
Paradise Road (1997)
Powerful Film based on a true story
When I saw that this film has such a low rating, I just had to leave a review. It's not your usual hero-during-world-war-film but the story of women who have been captured by the Japanese on Sumatra during the Second World War. By writing vocal pieces of famous classical songs (like Ravel's bolero) they gain some self-respect and self-esteem during their horrible time being in the camp.
What I find particularly interesting is that it's based on a true story and that the songs they sing in the film are THE ORIGINAL SONGS from the actual real life ladies who wrote when they were in the camp.
It's such a strong and powerful film and it doesn't sugercoat the horrible experiences they had and how they lived in the camp.
Now the cast is also just brilliant! Glenn close, Frances McDormand, Cate Blanchett, Juliana Margulies (from the good wife)... what more would one want?
I watched it the first time when I was 14 and it's one of my favourite films. I watch it again every few years and I can just recommend everyone who loves history films and a strong cast to watch it!
Inside Man (2022)
Great actors, great set, incredibly bad writing
I've watched the whole thing. After episode one I thought, that the plot holes and especially the weird reactions by ALL of them would be explained later. I was open to all the weird, unexplained stuff that happened in Episode 1.
But nothing was explained. All of the characters act in a completely weird way that would have been resolved if they had talked to each other for five minutes. He's the vicar. Everyone believes the vicar. He could have gone to the police first thing and everything would have been fine. But no - they all manage to get themselves deeper and deeper into a vortex of horrible things and "point of no returns" but without any sense.
I was expecting some sort of explanation and it would have made some sense. If they had some other things to hide maybe...? If they were guilty of some other bad stuff...? But no. Just ordinary people that act as if they were completely stupid and brainless.
The side story with Stanley Tucci and the reporter didn't make any sense at all.
The problem is: the idea of the story was good, the actors were great, camera, set design, everything great. But the storybook/writing was just soooo bad that it ruined everything.
It. Just. Didn't. Make. Sense.
In the end I was just bored because one bad/stupid/unreasonable action and idea came after another.
It feels as if Stephen Moffat thinks, he is this mastermind that can write everything and the audience swallows it just because he had a hit with Sherlock.
The Gift (2000)
Amazing spooky mystery
A really great, mesmerising story. I've seen this film the first time when I was 13 - of course, far too young. And now again, nearly 30 years old. I have to say, it's still as amazing and spooky as I remember.
You really can't compare this masterpiece to the so called "horror"- films produced by Netflix. "The gift" has so many levels, so many interesting strings. The acting is brilliant, the setting is amazing and there are no jump scares whatsoever. There are no cheap tricks so the audience feel spooked and this is one of the many strengths of this film. The atmosphere and the acting makes this film so gripping, intense and strong. And this is truly well made.
I would recommend it to everyone who loves good mystery/spooky/ghostly films.
Absolutely brilliant.
Devil in Ohio (2022)
More suspense with a long breath than horror
If you don't expect a horror film, this is quite alright in my opinion. It was entertaining to watch and I was interested in how the story would unfold. I also liked that Mae wasn't depicted as clearly good or bad - she has experienced deep trauma so none of her actions were not understandable.
Still some of the other characters' actions are weird. Which highly trained professional psychologist would let a fresh trauma survivor live at their place? What mother would start to completely ignore her family? The children are also a bit flat and kind of unreasonably jumping to conclusions. The older child suddenly starts to date her female "best friend" so there's also a queer storyline. The thing is though that it doesn't really make sense and feels a bit like queer baiting to me. The middle child is just weirdly angry and she seems that she could be more reasonable but no - director or writer decided that she is just super unreasonable all the time as if she didn't have one yota of empathy. Her gay best friend (again... all the clichés with this guy... lazy writing/lazy directing) is also very unreasonable, flat, annoying and is just jealous and unjust.
So... all in all the depiction of the characters seems very lazy to me as if someone just put some ingredients together but completely forgot to add salt/spices - to make something more interesting out of it.
The music/folk songs were really great.
Devil in Ohio seems a little bit like one of the usual Netflix productions which are a bit "meh" but thankfully it is better than them. Storyline was alright and it was entertaining to watch.
