Carmen: A Hip Hopera (2001)
Crap
This was one of the dumbest ideas MTV has come up with. I just thank god that it bombed so badly that they never think of doing a "Hip Hopera" again. Hip-Hop is a simple musical form, and trying to combine it with Opera and making musical theatre out of it is probably one of the worst ideas imaginable. I hated hated hated hated hated this film. Hated every minute of my time it wasted. Hated every agonizing, taste reducing minute of it. Don't watch this. Unless you want to beat your head up against the wall and waste an hour trying to plead for the time you wasted watching it.
Gattaca (1997)
One of the Best movies I've ever seen.
GATTACA is by far one of the best movies I have ever seen. The first time I saw it I was very depressed to think that this is what our future could look like. After watching it many times after that, I realized the movie is more than just a grimm depiction of the future. It shows us that it is possible to do whatever we truly want to do. All that it takes is willpower and the passion for it. If you have that, then anything is possible.
Michael Nyman's score really helps drain every emotion out of the listener that is possible. He uses very simple melodies to draw out this emotion, rather than write bombastic, over dramatic scores that draw the attention away from the characters and the story. Everytime I listen to this score seperately, I always think of what is going on in the film and I am filled with the same emotion as when I watch it. The music becomes the different characters and situations in the film.
If you ever get the chance, watch this film. Hopefully it will make you think about what you really want to do in life. And hopefully it will help give you the willpower to make it happen.
