What Happens Later (2023)
This movie is for grown ups
I really likes this movie. Two former lovers have a chance encounter and get stuck in an airport with cancelled flights. What we get is a romantic walk through memory lane, where two adults with regret, pain, and all the life experiences end up talking about everything all night.
Don't expect the classic Meg Ryan cliche romantic comedy. This is more like Ethan Hawke's Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, & Before Midnight trilogy. It's a lot of dialogue, which makes the viewer reflect on their own past experiences and life choices with nastalgia in a very endearing way. David Duchovny is charming as ever in a very convincing performance of a man filled with regrets. Meg Ryan is brilliant as always. This is a great film for mature adults who've lived and lost.
Splice (2009)
I feel like I need a silkwood shower now
This movie is deeply disturbing on many levels. It shocks you with scenes of weird science, rape, and even a portrayal of beastiality...well sort of. It keeps you intrigued...until it gives you the creeps and makes you feel dirty. You want to look away or turn it off, but have to finish it just for the conflict resolution. It iS entertaining. Mainly because of shock value. Adrien Brody is always brilliant in everything, and his co-star was equally believable considering this whole film is utterly unbelievable and absurd. The "monster"is weirdly adorable for most of the film...until she isn't anymore.
Luckiest Girl Alive (2022)
TRIGGER WARNING NECESSARY...Hard to review
The trailer for this film is VERY MISLEADING!!
There is a very real, very triggering depiction of gang rape that should come with a trigger warning. It is so graphic that I was mentally re-traumatized by it for weeks after. This needs to be addressed by the producers/executives who make the film and the trailers for the film. I am not the only trauma survivor who had no idea that was coming, and was thoroughly re-traumatized by it.
Putting that aside, this film hits on some very important parts of the rape culture including slut shaming the victim, the "boys will be boys" mentality, and the sad truth about the rumor mill/gossip circles of high school and a small community. Also the was her mother reacts is very on point. So it's VERY honest and accurate about what really happens to young women/girls when they are the victim or rape, and then re-victimized over and over again in a community.
NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART, but truthful and needs to be seen.
Bones and All (2022)
"Everyone has their rules, and THAT is not one of mine"...WOW MIND BLOWN
You have to watch it to understand. It gets very disturbing on a few scenes, as all horror films do, but it is SO AMAZING while being so disturbing. I was completely engrossed in this film from the start. I watched it solely because Tomithee Chalamet is in it, and he freaking blew my mind in this roll. Even if you forget about him, the other actors/characters in this film are so well played and creepy!
This film takes the human experience, and applies it perfectly to an inhuman thing...well except for that ONE human anyway. It made me think "what kind of eater would I be? What would my "rules" be?" THIS is great writing! It takes you to a place you don't want to go, then forces you to face who YOU would be if you did go there. Trust me when I say, it's something to watch, because it makes you examine yourself.
God's Favorite Idiot (2022)
I don't get the bad reviews here?!
I loved this show. I loved all the characters, and how they were all funny in their own weird quirky ways. I loved that it has a positive message about God without being pretentious and overtly religious. The style of silly comedy was fun and had me laughing a lot. My favorite was watching Melissa McCarthy and her real life husband Ben Falcone acting together again. Their real life chemistry shined through in this series and made it endearing and adorable. Melissa MCCarthy's character starts out raunchy and becomes sweeter as things unfold. Watch it, and make up your own mind instead of going by the reviews.
The Choice (2016)
BAD fake accent and bad CHOICE of male lead actor
The story is typical Nicholas Sparks predictability as usual. Beautiful setting on the marsh. Beautiful houses, beautiful animals. It's the lead male actor Benjamin Walker I have a problem with in this role. He's all wrong. His horrible fake southern accent and his horrible bad acting in this film ruined it for me. I've seen him in other things where he was soooo much better. I swear if it weren't for his bad chops in this, the movie would be much better. Theresa Palmer is Australian and you can't even tell! She's more believable as a southerner than he is! Maybe it's nitpicking, but it ruined the film for me.
Summerland (2020)
Beautifully sweet and heartwarming
Not everything has to be a controversy. It's just a simply told story of love, war, and friendship that stands the test of time. An old wartime story, set in a beautiful location, with relevant themes. It still manages to be funny, interesting, and timeless. There were several times I had considered watching this film, but opted out for something more modern or funny. Sometimes things just happen at the right time. I watched it at the perfect time for my own soul. I needed this kind of wholesome whimsical sweetness in my life right now. Anyone reading this review probably does too. We all do. Watch it!
The Crowded Room (2023)
Had to update my review to a 10 after finishing it
Tim Holland is amazing in this. So are the other actors involved. The problem I'm having is the misrepresentation of DID as having symptoms of Schizophrenia. If the character has Dissociative Identity Disorder, then he wouldn't see his alters as other people. He wouldn't know them. He would be basically blacked out or at least feel like he "spaced out" and not remember what the alters were doing. He wouldn't see them as people in his life that he knew. That's a symptom of schizophrenia...seeing people or hearing voices that aren't real. But if you can suspend your disbelief long enough to ignore this (and other flaws) in this story, it's actually very interesting and intriguing.
Update: I retract my former critiques and leave it with this. Tom Holland was amazing and the way they did this series was absolutely awesome and intriguing.
You People (2023)
Meet the Parents, but Racism
Reminded me of meet the parents in that Murphy's Law kind of way. I really loved this movie. It was offensively funny, but in a clever way that addressed racial differences head on. It showed how we can love each other and still need to do better, but in a way that was funny and made me laugh a lot, and without being annoyingly "woke" and trying to be too relevant. Jonah Hill, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Eddie Murphy all shine in this comedy. It kept me cringing/laughing the whole time. Honestly the only thing I didn't like in this movie was Jonah Hill's hair. It's a good movie to stream at home.
