The Idol: Daybreak (2023)
should be titled "The Weeknd thinks he is inspiring"
I literally have no words, how could a show be this bad.
Not even the stacked cast, hbo sunday slot and jennie kim can save this shambly mess anymore. I'm pretty sure it's clear to everyone now that this show is an exploitative disaster and the aesthetics of its predecessor, euphoria, that the idol has tried to match have been missed by a long shot.
Knowing that most of the dialogue has been written by the weeknd makes this so much worse to watch; he has written everyone to look up to him like a god and the 20 minute dinner scene of him 'inspiring' jocelyn to make better music then eventually deciding to abuse her with a hairbrush was the worst written piece of television i've ever seen. "i wanna be taken seriously" "why" "because i do" "why."
i think another reason this show has missed its mark is bc it has not explained why jocelyn was so willing to instead tedros in her life and take over her emotions. Idk if the weeknd thought it would just be assumed because of his perception of his looks but spoiler alert abel, it definitely isn't. I think it's finally time the weeknd is humbled.
The Idol: Double Fantasy (2023)
have we learnt nothing
I thought that after the season 8 game of thrones disaster that every writer, producer or director in the film industry knew that sacrificing coherent storylines and characters for flashy moments and shock value is gonna blackball your name in television, however sam levinson and the weeknd still believe that people watch movies and tv shows just to watch flashy images, misogynistic depictions of women, 'aesthetic' dialogue, conventionally attractive people smoking and unnecessary nudity.
This show was obviously made so the weeknd can live out all his creepy fantasies and exploit ideas that he thinks his audience wants to see. Abel, we don't want to see a depressed women bashed around and sexually abused while having dance breaks that were clearly made to be edited on tik tok.
This show needs to stop airing for its disgusting taste and for the safety of lily-rose depp as well, she had originally joined the show for a story about a woman making her way in the music industry, the weeknd then said the show was leaning too far into a 'female perspective' and fired the original woman director (which wasted $75m) and brought in sam levinson to write it instead. Lily you don't have to be objectified to prove you are talented, you are talented and we will support you through what happens with this show.
Yellowjackets: Burial (2023)
critics hate fun
Before you watch this episode and are shocked at the low ratings id like you to remember that critics hate fun and although they beg for character development when an experimental and visceral version of that is presented they turn away in disgust. Nowadays, critics beg for something new and fresh on television as most movies and tv shows are becoming copies of copies and ideas are running dry but as soon as new ideas are shown they deplore it and tell them to stick to this basics and work from there. This was an amazing episodes that really lets you connect and explore the minds of the surviving yellowjackets. This was the moment when i started to really connect with the characters as i saw who they were and what they truly desired. Yellowjackets still remains one of the most amazing television shows to grace our tvs today. Don't listen to critics who are clueless as to what to do when something new presents itself.
The Real Housewives of Sydney (2017)
should be put in national archives
Say what you want about how trashy, selfish and cruel the women are but no season of real housewives has ever delivered as much drama in a season than sydney. The ensemble of women also rounded out each other quite nicely making for some very dramatic but also heartfelt beats when needed.
The season also offered possibly the most intriguing real housewife television when they weren't fighting or gossiping, such as victoria reuniting with her estranged sister, nicole trying to boast her generousity at charity events and the dog wedding.
And the drama where do I even start? The season kicks off with victoria throwing athena's cape overboard and all bets are off from there; you have to see it to believe it
Drama every episode with trashy women trying to out trash each other, what more could a person want watching reality tv?
Scream VI (2023)
yes i am screaming.
Honestly, this film may seem perfect to me because i have not enjoyed the previous 3 scream films but i am a very happy scream fan at the moment.
A nice conclusion of a 27 year long franchise that draws on and appreciates its predecessors but acknowledges that the rules needed to change. Cinematography was definitely a highlight, you almost found me frothing at the mouth with every shot of Ghostface and thankfully, a motive that actually makes sense. Moreover, i found myself more worried and emotional about the cast as they were likeable people with appropriate depth and weren't made jerks to kill off; clearly added in to make the audience scream "yes!" but was always executed in ways that always made me feel monotone.
I found this movie silly (in a scream-worthy way), fun, stressful, exciting and most of all, cohesive. I'm excited to see where these characters go.
You: The Death of Jonathan Moore (2023)
there is just no way
There is no plausible explanation anyone could ever tell me that would convince me that this ending could've actually happened. I just have so many issues with the unbreakable plot armor joe has been accumulating progressively as each season goes on.
Surely one detective out there would at least be able to put together that joe was closely involved in the crimes, deaths and disappearances of candace, beck, love, malcom, simon, gemma, delilah, forty, peach, rhys, nadia and paco; has the show also forgotten that sherry and cary are still alive and were attacked by him (and love)? A sloppy "i made my helpless husband do it" in a suicide note doesn't change the fact he was complicit in kidnapping them. Theo also saw on the cameras that he put natalie's body in the car.
A ferret could put that all together and make a solid case against him oh but since he's left those places and has big fancy lawyers who can clean any name offscreen he's fine.
You: The Fox and the Hound (2023)
4th album curse
It seems that tv shows and artists alike always try to stray away from their original style to do something unique and different around their 4th album or 4th season. This season is predominantly different but in all the wrong areas; having a 'whodunnit' mystery in a show and casting aside joe's obsessive tendencies (which is the main focus and concept of the show) was definitely a choice.
Shows, artists, or whoever sometimes need to learn that sticking to what fans have been drawn to all along instead of trying to push boundaries and excite other demographics. It's laughable to watch the show try to keep viewers engaged with new ideas when sometimes the old formula works just fine.
