The Sky Has Fallen (2009)
different and respectable....
Saw this at the horrorfest in Ky and was happy I chose this flick.
It obviously had a minimal budget but it seemed to have a solid story and good acting. The camera quality was good and the "Strangers" in hoods were filmed with eerie perfection.
I enjoyed this much more than most horror because it "Did what it could" and didn't try to be something bigger than it was. It did get a little long winded with dialogue at some points, but it is an indie film and is expected with low budget film-making.
I would like to see this movie remade with a bigger budget, maybe so we could get a more satisfying "ending" and some flashbacks of how the two characters intertwined. But overall, I say it was one of the best at horrorfest.
Mad Max (1979)
huh? Was Mad Max kind of a Puss?
Okay before I say anything just let me say this...in fairness to the film, it was made in 1979 and on a low budget (For the times). And I was born in 1985, and I am a screen writing major, and I decided to watch this after 7 years of my elders telling me how amazing it IS....
Now...as a fan of low budget and post apocalyptic film, I was looking forward to this. But it took nearly 40 minutes to develop like-able characters and never gave us a reason for the psycho behavior of the bad guys (Other than they are psycho). Secondly I heard of some bad ass named mad max, which to me seemed like a puss. He quit after his friend was killed? really? What a d-bag?
I can't understand why Mel Gibson was so highly regarded in this...he seemed average to me. Maybe he stood out in comparison to the other over actors?
We never saw a major destroyed city, we never saw a sign of failed government (Unless you count the stupid lawyer scene)...if I wasn't told this was post apocalyptic before watching it, I never would have known....
This movie was bad to me, but maybe you had to be there in 79 to truly understand. I just think this doesn't even compare to films of it's genre like
---A boy and his dog
---hell comes to frogtown
---omega man
---the stand
but hey it is what it is...i give it 4 / 10 and that's generous.
A Boy and His Dog (1975)
A truly awesome display of low budget science fiction
This movie was awesome. For fans of science fiction it gave you everything you wanted. A young man with a dirty mind and his companion who is smarter than him! the constant bantering between the two is hilarious and awesome.
It shows you how they survive, gives you an idea of structural society, and shows how such simple things like popcorn becomes a rarity. You actually have a growing connection with the dog and don't want to see vic split up with him.
The underground community with their wicked plans to use Vic for his sperm to repopulate was another awesome twist to the film. Not to mention the sneaky chick to lure him down there...but hey Blood warned him!
The ending made it all come together so beautifully. there was no miracle of finding green land where the pure spring water flows...no miracle technology to make things better, no bright horizon for mankind. But hey Vic saved his best friend and they shall live another day in the dreaded world....
----> In my opinion this is the best ending I've ever seen in a science fiction movie in a long long.....no ever! I loved it...(Way better than Mad Max I must say)
Hell Comes to Frogtown (1988)
Eat Lead Froggy
Pretty solid movie for it's time. I think it was a little silly at times, the special effects for the time were probably decent, but the fact is it was entertaining.
Roddy Piper as the last potent man, awesome. In terms of post apocalyptic movies, I would say this is an underrated flick. I would recommend to sci-fi fans....but don't come in to watching this thinking you've found a diamond in the rough.
You could most certainly find a better movie to eat up your time but if you're looking for some thoughtless fun this one might be the right one for the moment.
Just a decent movie overall. 6 / 10
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
Trying a little too hard?
This movie isn't the worst but not the best either. It's possible that the massive success of the first transformers film caused problems for this one. They obviously upped the budget and special effects and with that we lost a lot of the story. The first seemed to focus more on Sam (Shia) and he did an excellent job acting....this time we got tons of action action action and the actors didn't really get to act but simply run around while robots fight. It was worth seeing as a transformer fan but I will tell the producers/Michael bay that you don't have to try so hard....
*we don't expect to see fart/hump/sex jokes --- your movie doesn't need it.
*Why put in an aging robot with a cane? ----you movie doesn't need it !
*Stop showing Megan Fox in sexy stances that people just don't stand in ! your movie doesn't need it... (She is pretty without you making her stand like a porn star)
Pick a target audience and stick with it fellas, cause you really watered this down with everything but a plot....but because of the amazing special effects I give you 6 / 10
