Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg (2022)
Stultifyingly boring
This political slot, which used to be required viewing in its heyday, is now completely inconsequential. Dropping the paper review was a mistake. It not only gives context to the subsequent discussions, but informs the viewer of the presentation of the debate. Kuenssberg is far too obsequious with the guest. She is easily manipulated by flattery and 'in jokes'. The choice of panel members adds no value. I see that the BBC is striving to achieve some kind of impartial balance, but this just leads to dull partisanship. Kuenssberg consistently fails to cut through the prepared statements the guest wants to present, turning the interview into just another party political broadcast.
A Spy Among Friends (2022)
Unwatchable
Spy thrillers are my favourite genre. I was looking forward to this series. The cast is first class. The story is ripe for a new interpreation. Macintyre's books are brilliantly crafted and an ideal starting point. I realise it's difficult to create jeopardy when the outcome of the plot is a matter of history, but for me this programme fails miserably. I have just struggled through the first episode. I won't suffer the rest. The first thing which grates is the constant semi-darkness. The anachronisms also jar. This programme was not directed; it was merely edited. I cared not a jot for the characters or the narrative. A wasted opportunity.
