E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
E.T. phone home
E. T. The Extra-Terrestrial is a 1982 science fiction film that follows a young boy who befriends an alien who was left behind on earth, and try's to help him get back home.
This is one I'll probably get a lot of flack for, but I just don't get all the hype around this movie. Directed by the great Steven Spielberg, E. T. is one of the most iconic movies in history, but for some reason I just couldn't get into it. I watched it twice and both times I was just completely bored, and wanted to fall asleep. There's not any one specific thing I can pinpoint and say I don't like, I just found the overall film not that entertaining. The premise is creative and sounds very intriguing, but the movie just couldn't keep me interested enough to care about what happens.
Unfortunately, this flick just wasn't for me. But if you haven't seen it before, check it out and see what you think.
Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997)
Oh, okay. Um, I invented Post-Its
Romy And Michelles High School Reunion is a 1997 comedy that centers around two best friends who haven't achieved much after school who decide to impress their former classmates at their ten year reunion by fabricating their success.
Starring Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, Romy and Michelle will never be thought of as one of the best movies of all time, but it still is a pretty good comedy packed with some fun laughs. Sorvino and Kudrow are great together portraying two ditzy blondes who'd rather have a good time than work, which is why when the time comes to impress their classmates they need to make up a success story. It's not going to win any awards for creativity, but if you can sit back and take it for what it is, it's pretty entertaining.
The cast is good, the story is funny, and it's an easy film to throw on in the background anytime. If you haven't seen it before, it's worth a watch.
Calendar Girl (1993)
It started with a dream and a stolen convertible
Calendar Girl is a 1993 comedy-drama that follows three friends who travel to Hollywood in hopes of meeting their dream girl Marilyn Monroe.
This is one of those films that I've liked since I was a kid, so nostalgic reasons keep me coming back to revisit this fun little film. The story isn't anything too impressive, but it's enjoyable to watch the three main characters stumble around trying to come up with the perfect plan to meet their dream girl, only to fail most of the time. The cast is good, there's plenty of funny moments, and although it's not a movie that will blow you away, it's still pretty entertaining.
If you've never seen Calendar Girl before, it's definitely worth checking out at least once.
The Voices (2014)
Hearing voices can be murder
The Voices is a 2014 psychological horror comedy that follows a man struggling with schizophrenia who begins to lose control of himself after his pets convince him to stop taking his medication.
This is a strange film that I could see some people having a difficult time getting into, but I found it nothing shy of entertaining. The premise is interesting with the main character's mental breakdown being the focal point for not only the story, but much of the comedy as well. It mixes elements of dark humor nicely into what could have been a straightforward horror flick. Ryan Reynolds performance is great, and he does a terrific job making you laugh while also pulling out some sympathy for his characters misfortunes. It's downright silly at times, and a little sad at others, but the overall movie is pretty enjoyable.
If you've never seen this before and are a fan of dark comedies, I would definitely recommend checking it out.
Coyote Ugly (2000)
Tonight, they're calling the shots
Coyote Ugly is a 2000 comedy-drama that follows a shy aspiring songwriter who starts to come out of her shell after getting a job at a woman-run New York bar.
This is one of those movies that is actually a lot better than it sounds on paper. It tells a decent story about how you should at least try, rather than just believe that you can't do something.
Piper Perabo stars as Violet Sanford, a girl from New Jersey who dreams of becoming a professional songwriter, but lets her stage fright get in the way of trying to get her name out there. Violet moves to New York where she stumbles upon a job at a bar where the women call the shots which helps Violet earn a living, but also helps her step out of her comfort zone.
It's not the best movie, but I've always enjoyed it. The cast is good, the characters are likable and if you're into popish country music then you'll probably like the soundtrack. If you've never seen this before, it's worth a watch.
Cast Away (2000)
We live and we die by the clock, that's all we have
Cast Away is a 2000 survival drama that centers around a FedEx executives attempt to survive after being stranded on an island when his plane crashes into the ocean.
Directed by famed director Robert Zemeckis, Cast Away is an absolute fantastic film, and one of my personal favorite Tom Hanks performances.
Hanks stars as Chuck Noland, a FedEx troubleshooter who's life takes a dramatic turn when he ends up stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean after a plane crash. Chuck must then learn how to survive off his surroundings in order to stay alive and try to make it back to the life he once had.
This is a movie that captures your interest right from the beginning, and keeps your attention all the way to the end. Hanks is captivating and delivers a phenomenal performance that really pulls you into his isolated world and makes you feel his desperation, wanting nothing more than to be with the one he loves. It's well written, beautifully directed, and just an overall terrific film that will never disappoint.
If you haven't seen this great movie before, I would highly recommend checking it out.
The Replacements (2000)
Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory lasts forever.
The Replacements, is a 2000 sports comedy that centers around a group of misfits and underdogs that get hired to play pro football after the players of the league go on strike.
Directed by Howard Deutch and starring Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman, The Replacements is a very fun film about a group of nobodies who are given a chance to be somebody when they are chosen to play pro football after the pampered overpaid pro's go on strike. It has a fantastic cast of comedic actors that bring the laughs on and off the field, along with some pretty good dialogue that makes certain scenes stick out. It has good characters, plenty of amusing moments and is just an entertaining film all around.
If you've never seen The Replacements before and are looking for a fun comedy, I would definitely recommend checking it out.
The Bounty Hunter (2010)
you're telling me that I'll get five grand to go pick up my ex-wife and bring her to jail
The Bounty Hunter is a 2010 romantic action comedy that follows a bounty hunter who is tasked with retrieving his ex-wife after she skips bail.
Directed by Andy Tennant (Fools Rush In, Everafter), The Bounty Hunter is a decent little action Rom Com that might not be anything to write home about, but is still a fun film all around. Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston work well together and share some very good comedic moments that keep the film pretty entertaining. The feuding spouses on opposite sides of the law premise made for a nice story that set up some good comedy situations, and it had a solid cast to back it all up. It has good characters, funny jokes and enough action that just about anyone should be able to find something enjoyable about this movie.
It's not the best romantic comedy out there, but it was definitely more creative than some others. If you haven't seen this film before, I'd recommend checking it out.
Crank (2006)
If You Stop, You Die
Crank is a 2006 action film that centers around a hitman who wants revenge after he is poisoned by an enemy and must constantly keep his adrenaline flowing or he will die.
This is a movie that has a slightly silly premise, but it works so well for an in your face action flick that from the very beginning never slows down for a second. Jason Statham is fantastic, and delivers a great performance showcasing his action star abilities to the fullest. It's fast paced and intense with a laundry list of fun moments and dialogue that keeps your attention and makes this film completely entertaining.
This is one of my favorite Jason Statham movies and one film that doesn't disappoint. If you haven't seen Crank before and are a fan of good action movies, then I would definitely recommend checking this out.
Tommy Boy (1995)
Did you eat a lot of paint chips when you were a kid
Tommy Boy is a 1995 buddy comedy that follows a dimwitted underachiever who attempts to save his fathers auto parts business after his unexpected passing.
Directed by Peter Segal and starring Chris Farley and David Spade, Tommy Boy is a good film that might not have been a huge success at the box office, but definitely found a fanbase and showcased Farleys comedic leading man's abilities instead of just supporting side characters. It's filled with a ton of great comedy from Farley and Spade, who had amazing chemistry and made the perfect comedy tag team of the 90's. It's silly and fun with the perfect amount of laugh out loud moments that will leave you with nothing but smiles by the end of the movie.
I've always enjoyed Black Sheep a little bit better, but Tommy Boy is still a fantastic comedy that should entertain anyone looking for a good laugh. If you haven't seen this before, I would recommend checking it out.
The Cherokee Kid (1996)
He followed no rules. He lived by no laws. He had no clue.
The Cherokee Kid is a 1996 made for T. V. Western comedy about a naive farm boy's quest for vengeance after his parents are killed by a vicious land-grabber when he was a child.
Most made for T. V. films usually aren't very good, but I've always enjoyed The Cherokee Kid. It captures the spirit of an old west tale of revenge alongside a mix of fun comedy nicely. Sinbad is delightful to watch as Isaiah Turner, a bumbling farm boy who grows up and learns from a great cast of characters how to become an old west gunslinger, so he can avenge the death of his parents and brother. It's pretty silly at times, but never fails to be anything other than entertaining.
It's not the best western out there or the best comedy ever, but it's still a good movie that should bring out a few chuckles. If you haven't seen this before, I would recommend giving it a chance.
The Heartbreak Kid (2007)
Smells like ya'll been hitting the Devil's lettuce
The Heartbreak Kid is a 2007 romantic dark comedy that follows a newly wed man who falls for another woman while on his honeymoon in Mexico.
Directed by the Farrelly brothers, The Heartbreak Kid is one of those movies that are funny the first time you watch it, but gets less and less each time you see it after. It's not a bad film, but its attempt at being a raunchy comedy without top notch jokes gets kind of old after a while. It has a good cast that gives mostly solid performances, but the comedy fails to capture your interest enough to make rewatching this movie entertaining.
This isn't a bad movie by any means, but it's just not the kind of film that you'll want to see more than once. If you haven't seen it before, check it out and see what you think.
Little Nicky (2000)
I'm from the South. The Deep South.
Little Nicky is a 2000 action comedy that follows the son of the devil as he attempts to bring his two brothers back to hell before their father completely disintegrates.
This isn't Adams Sandlers best film, but it's definitely not his worst either. It tells a silly story filled with ridiculous characters (but that's not unusual for a Sandler flick) who stars in the title role as Nicky, a charming and fun character who even though is the son of satan doesn't have a bad bone in his body. Some of the Comedy is eye rolling, but there are still plenty of funny moments overall. The cast is good, the premise is creative, and if you're looking for a goofy comedy to sit back and veg out to, then it's a decent watch.
You won't find anything spectacular here, but it's still a good comedy for what it's worth. If you haven't seen it before, I'd recommend checking it out.
The Wedding Singer (1998)
Please get out of my Van Halen t-shirt before you jinx the band and they break up
The Wedding Singer is a 1998 romantic comedy that centers around a man recently left at the alter who falls in love with a waitress set to be married to another man.
This is a very charming little Rom Com and one of my personal favorite Adam Sandler films. It tells a sweet love story about two people finding each other after realizing they have been with the wrong person. It stars Sandler alongside Drew Barrymore who are fantastic together, and make the perfect on screen couple. It's full of solid comedy, great performances, and has a beautiful ending that will touch your heart. The characters are likable, the premise is creative and fun, and the whole movie overall is just quite entertaining.
I love this movie and have ever since it came out. If you're a fan of Sandler or Barrymore and haven't seen this before, I would definitely recommend checking it out.
Wanderlust (2012)
Leave your baggage behind
Wanderlust is a 2012 comedy that centers around an unemployed married couple who try to escape the stress of their big city lives by moving to a Georgia commune.
Written by David Wain and Ken Marino with directing duties by Wain, Wanderlust is a delightful comedy that follows a simple formula relying on it's odd and colorful characters to bring home the story in a somewhat unusual but hilarious fashion.
Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston star as George and Linda, a married couple down on their luck who finds comfort in the unorthodox lifestyle surrounding a commune they stumble upon while driving through Georgia.
Marino and Wain wrote a good story that is interesting, funny and charming. The cast is superb, with a lot of familiar faces giving great comedic performances, and although it might not be everyone's cup of tea, I'd recommend giving it a chance.
Knock at the Cabin (2023)
All Of Humanity Has Been Judged
Knock At The Cabin is a 2023 apocalyptic psychological horror film that follows a vacationing family that is held hostage by four strangers who ask them to do something unthinkable in order to save humanity.
Directed by M. Night Shyamalan and based on the 2018 novel Cabin At The End Of The World, Knock At The Cabin isn't M. Night Shyamalans best film, but it is certainly not his worst. It tells an intriguing story that really does a good job capturing your attention early on and keeps you wondering what's going to happen next, but unlike most of M. Nights previous films there's no big twist ending here. Instead, he delivers a straightforward conclusion that some might not find satisfying, but ultimately works well for the story being told. It has a good cast behind it with Dave Bautista standing out and really giving a solid performance. It has some tense moments that add some good drama, but nothing that will really shock anyone or surprise you.
Overall, I found the film enjoyable. If you're a fan of M. Night and haven't seen this before, It's definitely worth checking out.
Brain Smasher... A Love Story (1993)
We Are Not Ninjas
Brainsmasher... A Love Story is a 1993 romantic action comedy about a nightclub bouncer who helps a model on the run from Chinese ninja monks who want the flower that she possesses.
This is one of those movies that most people will probably hate, but as terrible as it might be I absolutely love this film. The story isn't very clever and borderlines ridiculous, but the characters are fun and keep things entertaining. I'm a fan of Andrew "Dice" Clay, so I thought he gave a great performance as the tough talking bouncer Ed, and Teri Hatcher portrayed the spoiled model role perfectly. It has some good humorous moments with some silly but funny dialogue, and a decent amount of action to make the movie overall enjoyable.
It might be so bad it's good quality, but I love this film. If you've never seen Brainsmasher before, I would recommend checking it out.
Stop-Loss (2008)
The bravest place to stand is by each other's side
Stop-Loss is a 2008 war drama that centers around a soldier's life getting turned upside down when he returns home after completing his service and finds out that the army isn't letting him go.
From Boys Don't Cry director Kimberly Peirce comes Stop-Loss, a gripping war drama that doesn't hold back it's feelings and shows some of the difficulties that can be associated with trying to return home from combat.
Ryan Phillippe stars as Brandon King, a decorated soldier whose ready to return home and start the next chapter of his life when he is informed that the army is sending him back into the field. Angry and frustrated Brandon then goes AWOL in hopes of getting the decision overturned which sets off even more problems.
This is a fantastic film with an incredible cast that hit nothing but home runs as far as performances go. The story although kind of sad is very compelling, and Peirce captures the main characters anger, desperation and confusion beautifully.
I love this movie, and if you haven't seen it before, I would highly recommend checking it out.
Fist Fight (2017)
Something occurred to me as I was being dragged down a flight of stairs by a horse on meth
Fist Fight is a 2017 comedy that centers around a school teacher who is challenged to a fight with a colleague after unintentionally causing his termination.
I'm not entirely sure if this is supposed to be a remake of Three O'Clock High or not, but if not, it definitely has a very similar premise. The only difference being this films focus is on two teachers fighting instead of students, and it puts a lot more emphasis on the comedy elements than Three O'Clock High did. But otherwise, this is a pretty decent film that delivers the laughs that you're looking for. Charlie Day and Ice Cube work great together mixing their comedic energies and getting the most out of their over the top performances.
I'm a big fan of Three O'Clock High, so if this is a remake, then I prefer the original. But overall, it's still an entertaining comedy that is definitely worth checking out.
The Super (1991)
The best way to punish a slumlord is to make him a tenant
The Super is a 1991 comedy that centers around a slumlord who gets sentenced by a judge to live in his own dilapidated building until it's brought up to code.
This is a great comedy from the early 90's starring Joe Pesci that isn't high on the radar, but definitely should be. Pesci's performance is hilarious and with the rest of the cast bring nothing but a good time to the table. The story is creative and funny, the jokes are silly but effective, and there's no shortage of entertaining moments that will make its 86 minute run time fly by.
I've loved this movie since I was a kid, and if you haven't seen it before, I would recommend checking it out.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010)
You never sign up for anything at school. You fly below the radar! That way you never raise anybody's expectations.
Diary Of A Wimpy Kid is a 2011 comedy that follows a 12 year old boy as he deals with the trials and tribulations of life in middle school.
This is a wonderful film that tells a charming story about growing up and how even though you really want to fit in, you should always just be yourself.
Zachary Gordon stars as Greg Heffley, a 12 year old transitioning from elementary to middle school whose trying to find the fastest way to the top of popularity. Only all his get popular quick ideas seem to backfire.
It has a terrific cast, some good comical moments, and a suitable end that will warm your heart and leave you entertained. If you've never seen this movie before, It's definitely fun for the whole family.
The Iron Claw (2023)
Sons. Brothers. Champions.
The Iron Claw is a 2023 biographical sports drama that centers around the ups and downs experienced by legendary pro wrestling family the Von Erichs.
Written and Directed by Sean Durkin, The Iron Claw is a movie that, although overshadowed by the tragic history of the Von Erichs tried to honor their pro wrestling legacy while telling their unfortunate story. It's hard to tell their tale without acknowledging the saddest aspects of their history, but I do wish they would have shown a few more ups to compensate for all the downs. After all, the Von Erichs were rock stars in the Texas territory, and without a doubt fantastic wrestlers that helped pave the way. The entire cast was incredible except for Aaron Dean Eisenberg whose portrayal of Rick Flair was just awful, but the rest of the actors delivered terrific performances.
As heartbreaking as the second half of the movie is, it was still nice to see the Von Erich story on the big screen. Overall, this was a very good movie that tells a difficult story that I'm sure wasn't easy to fit into just two hours. But whether you're a fan of wrestling or not, this is definitely worth checking out.
Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! (2004)
In every love story, there's only room for one leading man
Win A Date With Tad Hamilton is a 2004 romantic comedy that follows a small town girl who wins a date with a celebrity making her best friend jealous and creating a love triangle between the three.
This is a mediocre Rom Com that won't do anything to impress you, but still has its moments of fun. The cast is decent enough with good performances from Kate Bosworth and Josh Duhamel, but I'm not a big fan of Topher Grace so the role of the best friend could have been better. Although not completely creative, the movie tells a nice little story about two friends falling in love and living happily ever after.
It's not that bad, and it's not that great either, but it's definitely entertaining enough to check out at least one time if you're a fan of Rom Coms.
Capone (2020)
We all pay for our crimes in the end
Capone is a 2020 biological drama that centers around notorious gangster Al Capone, and the last year of his life suffering from neurosyphilis and dementia at his mansion in Florida.
I'm a Tom Hardy fan so my hopes were high going into this one, but unfortunately it was rather disappointing. I knew it was about the last year of Capones life so I wasn't expecting there to be a lot of mafia gang shootings, car chases and what not, but I was expecting to at least see some good performances from a pretty decent cast of actors which seemed to fall by the wayside. Hardy's gravelly frog voice gets a bit irritating about 20 minutes in, and once I realized the film was just going to be him hallucinating the whole time while others try to get his hidden treasures, I lost interest pretty quick.
It wasn't as good as I had hoped for, but they can't all be winners I suppose. If you haven't seen this before, check it out and see what you think.
Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves! (1997)
Baseball's just a phase, it'll pass. But science is always cool
Honey We Shrunk Ourselves is a 1997 science fiction comedy that centers around four parents who accidentally shrink themselves and attempt to get their children's attention in order to get back to normal size.
This is a movie that I really enjoyed watching when I was a kid, but now many years later it doesn't hold up as well as the original. Aside from a couple of comical moments, the film is pretty forgettable due to its silly plot line, bad acting, and poor special effects. I'm a fan of Rick Moranis, but I'm sure he would even tell you that this isn't a very good film.
But on the other hand, it's still a perfect movie for kids, so if you haven't seen it before, it's worth watching with the little ones, and if nothing else they will be entertained.
