The Cafe (2011)
It Had Potential
There's a lot of good wordplay in the beginning that we enjoyed. The localized look at the everyday lives surrounding this little cafe was a nice break from the pace and sensationalized drama of most shows.
Then we got to the back half of season two. The tolerable morals became intolerable, and the plot became painful to endure.
This one had a lot of potential but lost its charm the longer it went. It has hints of some of the charm from the beginning, but in the end, just feels lost. Or perhaps it was hiding at the beginning and as we got to know who everyone really was, we realized we never would have spent the time with them in the first place.
The Little Mermaid (2023)
Not Impressed
Disney's latest attempt to reignite its magic once again fails to impress with mediocre writing, acting, and an odd cinematic tone for this story. It's not that there aren't talented, hardworking people behind the scenes-there definitely are. But the attempts to remake a beloved storyline doesn't require a reimagination of it. In the original animated film, Disney invited us into a world we'd never seen with characters we'd never met, and in this adaptation, recreated that world, recreated the central characters, and broke the magic. It might have been different if we'd never seen the original. As a classic, the two are inevitably going to be compared, though. The original was the benchmark, and the remake failed to capture our imagination, dooming it to be another in a string of disappointments for Disney.
