So far this 1st season is just poorly written. The dialogue lacks depth and doesn't make a lot of sense. I often find myself asking, 'wait, what just happened?' The story seems to change direction randomly and it doesn't seem intentional. Almost as if they were writing as they went along and realized, oops! That didn't work. Let's try this instead. Lots of dead ends which leave me wondering why they did it in the first place.
Regarding the costumes and make up, the actors and actresses look more like they belong in an expensive children's play rather than a nearly 1 billion dollar series. Over processed hair, too much stage make up, gaudy outfits, etc. The wardrobes seem to focus on showing off and accentuating bodily features of the women rather than being functional. For example: Bronwyn is wearing a loose racerback apron-style dress (that's just a hint too low in the front) while there is snow on the ground. She looks freezing. Long sleeves underneath would've made much more sense. The Numenor outfits look like Halloween costumes inspired by Byzantium. Eärien's pleated dress looks like a maternity gown, but it accentuates her bust so it's obvious why they chose that style. And the Harfoots, the most endearing characters so far, look like they raided Michaels and Joann Fabrics for their synthetic leaf and plastic acorn hair ensembles. I imagine lots of hot glue was used. Using natural foliage and less hair wax would've created a more realistic hobbit.
Oh and then there's Galadriel... she is anything but likable. In fact I found myself rooting for the dark forces over her. Her character is demanding, arrogant, and irrational revenge seeker. She seems like she's in a constant state of irritability. Frankly she's tiresome and I can't imagine how she becomes the Galadriel portrayed by Peter Jackson.
