The Menu (2022)
The trailer gave away the plot twists
I was really looking forward to watching The Menu because of the cast and because it's a thriller in a restaurant setting. But ultimately, the trailer included so many twists and surprise moments from the film that the plot was predictable. The final scene also seemed to closely mirror the final scene of the horror series, Midnight Mass.
If I had not seen the trailer, I'd probably be writing about how the film was unique and unexpected. Instead, I was left wanting more backstory about Chef Slowik and Margot, and a plot twist that extended beyond the satirical portrayal of the restaurant industry.
The Fastest Woman on Earth (2022)
Inspiring and heartbreaking (and not just for racing fans)
This documentary following Jessi Combs was inspiring and heartbreaking. On her relentless journey to break the women's land speed record, Jessi connects with Kitty O'Neil, the woman that set the record 40 years earlier. The most compelling parts of the documentary were the comparison of Kitty's and Jessi's experiences as women excelling in a sport dominated by men, as well as Jessi's pursuit to be a leader and role model to women wanting to pursue trades where women are not often represented.
The racing footage was impressive and includes runs from multiple years, and the introduction to the sport was enough to provide background to viewers unfamiliar with land speed racing.
