Blue's Clues (1996)
One of my Favorite Shows from my Childhood
Oh my Lord, do I have many memories of this show? I still own the DVDs from when I was a kid. And even stranger, I remember owning these four orange VHS tapes of Blue's Clues episodes and I can even remember those and I haven't seen those in frickin years. Blue is one of my favorite childhood characters, she's just so cute and likable, and I love her design in the old show (screw the new show's animation). I also really like Steve and Joe as hosts. I grew up with them both equally, but honestly I do love Steve a little more just because he was the original host, but Joe was just as fun and energetic as Steve was. If I had to pick my favorite episode, it'd be "Blue's Big Band" because I believe it was one of the earliest ones I owned and saw. Overall, I highly recommend the show to your kids and even adults might find it a bit charming compared to some children's shows.
The Tigger Movie (2000)
As a huge Pooh fan, I ADORE this movie
This, I believe, was the first time a Pooh movie centered around a character other than Pooh himself and Tigger is honestly a great character to explore. After Tigger ruins his friends' attempt to give Eeyore a winter home with his obsessive bouncing, he begins to wonder if there could possibly be more tiggers like him. It leads us to a story about family and how just because you aren't biological related doesn't mean those close to you can't be your family too. Additionally, the songs are all fantastic, especially Kenny Loggins' credit song "Your Heart Will Lead You Home", that is easily the BEST song from this movie. Also, the characters are as charming as usual and funny as well. My only problem with the film would be it's climax as it's a bit too dramatic for Winnie the Pooh. While it does have some part in the story showing how Tigger really does care about his friends and would risk his life for them, I just remember that the original film's climax was Pooh and Christopher Robin talking about the future, so...But overall, this is one of the best Pooh films in my opinion and I highly recommend it.
The Little Mermaid (1989)
An "Under the Sea" Adventure
"The Little Mermaid" is such an iconic Disney movie and one that helped save the Disney company from a dark age from the early 70s to late 80s. I know this movie gets a lot of flack nowadays (unreasonable flack if you ask me), but it's one I just can't hate. It's one I remember watching as a kid and loving, the songs are incredibly catchy, the characters are likable and memorable, and the story is just so much fun. Additionally, the animation is gorgeous and well-done. This is my mom's favorite movie of all time so maybe she helped me love it, but I can only describe this movie as "it's so good, it hurts".
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)
The Wonderful Thing about Movies, This Movie's a Wonderful Thing
I know, I know, this title might sound dumb, but I just couldn't resist.
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is indeed a WONDERFUL movie. The story(s) are entertaining, the animation is good, the characters are some of my favorite characters PERIOD, and the songs are classics and very easy on the ears. My favorite song ties between "The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers" for how catchy it is and "Heffalumps and Woozles" for it's incredible trippy imagery. This movie is basically three shorts tied together to make a film which isn't a bad idea since these stories take place in a book and each short is at least 24ish minutes so it just kind of works. Are these stories inconsistent? Yes, but when you're a kid, you won't care or probably even notice the inconsistency because you'll be enjoying the shenanigans these characters get into. Also, the message we get by the end of the movie about growing up and not being a kid always is truly sad and touching in my opinion. Now we get to my one negative about this film and that is the recycled animation. This movie came out during Disney's Dark Age so it's kind of expected since most of the films during that time had some recycled animation so I give this negative a teeny tiny pass but they do it so much in this film that it still gets a point taken off for it. But overall, this movie can only be described as 'insanely charming', and it still remains one of my favorite animated films/Disney films of all time.
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
It ISN'T flawless
Now, now before you get all upset, let me explain. This movie is still definitely one of Disney's best with its characters, animation, and songs. However, the story is where we get some of the flaws. Mainly, this movie does have multiple plot holes and it kind of bothers me that no one brings them up from most videos on the film I see. To be fair, none of the flaws ruin the movie since everything else has so much heart put into it. However, let me mention all the plot holes in the film that really bother me. 1. During "Be Our Guest", we hear this line by Lumiere, "Ten years we've been rusting, needing so much more than dusting". This leads the audience to be believing that the beast was cursed at age 11. But during the opening scene with the stain glass window, the prince doesn't look like a child at all, so that's kind of weird. 2. Another thing is when Gaston tells Lefou to stay at Belle's house until she and Maurice get back, but if Belle has supposedly been at Beast's castle since Christmas time (according to "The Enchanted Christmas"), how long has Lefou been there and how has he survived? Or do we just pretend the Beauty and the Beast sequels don't exist period? 3. How the frick did Belle lift the beast onto Philippe's back when she doesn't look THAT strong? There is also 1 animation flaw I noticed when re-watching the film. It's very subtle, but it's when Belle is looking around the west wing and she looks at the pic of the beast as a prince. She holds the ripped picture up to see the face but in the next shot, she's not touching the picture. It's mainly the three plot holes I mentioned before that prove the story isn't perfect. However, the characters are absolutely charming and likable, the animation is stunning and gorgeous, and finally, the songs. Oh, my, God, these songs are awesome. My personal favorite is honestly "Be Our Guest" for its catchy tune and incredible imagery. Overall, give it a watch and let's all write a petition for the remake to be burned because it is a SIN compared to this masterpiece of a film.
Peter Pan (1953)
My Favorite Movie from Childhood
I watched a lot of movies as a kid, most of which were from Disney and this film is no exception. I watched the crud out of this movie to the point that every song, character, scene, line just warms my heart more than any other film, maybe alongside Pinocchio and Winnie the Pooh too. The songs are fantastic, I love "You Can Fly", "Second Star to the Right", "A Pirate's Life for Me", "Following the Leader", even "What Made the Red Man Red" is at least catchy. The characters are all very likable, at least in my opinion. Surprisingly, as a kid, I always found John Darling's character to be so entertaining because he was smart but also childlike. Did you know that they originally weren't going to have John go to Neverland with Wendy and Michael? Yeah, I'm glad they changed that. Did you also know that John is supposed to be eight-years-old? Yeah, I thought he was like 12, and Wendy was 15. Also, Kathryn Beaumont as Wendy is quite a gem. She's amazing! Pan himself is a bit of a jerk at first, although very well portrayed by Bobby Driscoll (R. I. P.), but to me, he redeems himself when Tinker Bell risks her life to save him from a bomb and he tells her he cares about her. It's a nice moment that no one talks about. And, yes, I can see how the Indians do not hold up well, but again, as a kid, I thought they were cool. Additionally, Captain Hook is one of my favorite Disney villains because he has some of the funniest scenes, mainly with the Tick Tock Crocodile, but he's also cold and threatening at the same time. Unlike in Jake and the Neverland Pirates where he's just a frickin idiot. Overall, this movie is very special to me and I hope I love it for the rest of my life.
Pinocchio (1940)
Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee This Movie's Great You See
Dear sweet God do I LOVE this movie so much! While not as good as Snow White, in my opinion, it certainly did improve on it by having grander scenes and a bigger story. In Snow White, we're mostly at the Dwarfs' cottage and the Evil Queen's castle, while in this movie, we go to Geppetto's workshop, to into the town, to Stromboli's puppet show and wagon, to Pleasure Island, to the water, to inside Monstro, we go so many places in this movie and it does feel way more dark and adventurous than Snow White does, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Snow White, at least to me, is about being good on the inside and how being kind to others will benefit you and Disney's nails that theme and there is some dark imagery in that movie to be admired. In this film, however, the theme is how good things can only happen to good people and we do see what happens to people who do bad and how it ends for them. For the villains (maybe except Stromboli), they do get away with their crimes and in real life, sometimes that happens. However, for the "stupid little boys" on Pleasure Island, we see them get punished for their bad actions, including Pinocchio's friend, Lampwick in that terrifying donkey transformation scene. This movie really hammers in the message very well. Aside from that, the characters are extremely charming with Cliff Edwards as Jiminy Cricket, Christian Rub as Geppetto, Walter Catlett as Honest John, Mel frickin Blanc doing a hiccup for Gideon, Dickie Jones as Pinocchio, etc. They really give these characters fun personalities and make them very likable. You can have your opinion on Jiminy being useless or not but to me, he was pretty funny, especially when he says he wants to take on Lampwick. Also, the songs are pure gems. You've got "Little Wooden Head", "Give a Little Whistle", "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee", "I've Got No Strings", and Disney's own anthem, "When You Wish Upon a Star". These songs are fantastic and so heartwarming to hear whenever I watch this film. My personal favorite of the songs is actually "I've Got No Strings" because Pinocchio's singing is just frickin adorable and the animation for how the other puppets move is very well-done by the animators. Overall, this is definitely one of the greatest animated films of all time and while I still love Snow White more, this will forever be held as a true Disney classic.
Secondhand Lions (2003)
My SECOND favorite movie
"Secondhand Lions" feels like an underrated movie as no one I know knows it exists. And that's very sad because I ADORE THIS FILM! The actors really carry this movie, specifically our main characters played by Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, and Haley Joel Osment. They have really good chemistry with each other and believable character development. Caine and Duvall start out as grumpy old men who are stuck watching this "sissy boy" played by Osment, but as the film goes on, they slowly start to genuinely care about one another. This movie is also very funny. The corn scene is funny, the dialogue can be funny, but my favorite scene is when Caine and Duvall buy a lion, only to end up getting an old lioness. It's hilarious!
(Caine) "This lion's no good. It's. . .It's defective."
(Duvall) "It's a lion that's the main thing."
(Caine) "Well go ahead and shoot it anyway."
(Duvall) "No it wouldn't be sporting shooting it inside a crate."
Another great scene from this movie is when Duvall gives Osment his "what every boy needs to learn about becoming a man" speech. It's quite touching and well-acted. Now this movie does have some language but it's VERY mild, also WHERE THE HECK WAS THE STORE MANAGER DURING THAT EPIC FIGHT BETWEEN DUVALL AND THOSE TEENAGERS? Overall, seriously, go watch this movie, buy the DVD or rent it on Amazon if you must, but WATCH THIS MOVIE. It is literally a nearly PERFECT film.
Fantasia (1940)
I Can Appreciate This for What It Accomplished, But. . .
This isn't MY type of film. Personally, I like films with more of a narration which this doesn't have. However, this movie is gorgeous and the music's fantastic, but it's one I definitely won't be watching often.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
My Favorite Movie PERIOD
This movie is truly a masterpiece for its time and a pure classic. Without the accomplishments of this film, we wouldn't have the great animated films like Lion King or Moana. Ever since I was little, I just loved this movie and called it my favorite whenever I was asked. What can I say that hasn't already been said about this movie? The story is well-done, the animation is gorgeous, the characters are charming, and the songs are PURE DISNEY GEMS! Also, Snow White is actually my second favorite character OF ALL-TIME, mainly because she's the person I aspire to be. Someone who's optimistic and sees the good in everything, and is very kind. She's not perfect but really who is? Her qualities are overlooked nowadays and it's very disappointing as the morals she teaches us are the ones we should be telling our children and not JUST to do everything independently. Overall, this will forever hold that place in my heart as my favorite movie of all-time. Bravo Walt Disney, and everyone who was a part of this phenomenal film.
