Cheerful Weather for the Wedding (2012)
Delightfully real
I really enjoyed this movie. I hadn't heard of it until I came across it on demand tonight. Anything with "wedding" in the title catches my eye. The movie takes place on Dolly's wedding day in winter. She is torn between her fiancé of 2 months, and her friend turned lover that she spent an exciting summer with. Dolly spends the first half of the movie in her bedroom getting ready, where many different characters visit her and you learn about her relationship with each of them. From quirky family members, an opinionated mother, to funny cousins and a loving sister they all fit together well.
I loved all the characters and how they developed through others conversations. My favorite part was the flashbacks of the summer that Dolly and Joseph shared together, it was so innocent and light. Kitty (Dolly's sister)supported all the characters and she lightened the more serious conversations.
I thought the character development was strong, and there was a balance of strange, goofy and entertaining family members. Even though you only learn a little about each wedding guest and couple, you get a sense how each relationship is different.
I absolutely loved the setting (the entire movie takes place at Dolly's home) and of course the wardrobe of the 1930's. Dolly's wedding dress was stunning.
I highly recommend this movie.
Like Crazy (2011)
Time
First of all, I absolutely loved this movie. When I first saw the previews I was so excited (I love Felicity Jones) to see a movie that seemed like to would be depicted very real like and with a lot of heart. I was thoroughly impressed. I was nervous reading the negative reviews before seeing the movie but I was not disappointed.
I see a lot of reviewers didn't like that you couldn't tell how much time lapsed in between their meetings and different events. I think a lot of viewers completely missed how the director set up their lives in different scenes. Throughout the movie, their clothes, hair, electronics, living situation, promotions, etc helps let us know how much time has gone by. I thought the progression in their lives was greatly depicted in their surroundings. Take Anna's apartment for example, when she first is working for the magazine the apartment has chipped walls, minimal furniture. During the first scene of Simon and Anna as a couple where they are in Anna's apartment, there is a new kitchen table (before it was a painted, pallet like table) her hair length and color changes throughout the movie. Her desk also changes.
When Simon asks Anna to marry him, he states "I know we have only been together for 6 months, but we have known each other for 3 years" Biggest indicator of how much time has gone by or how long she has been living in that same apartment in London.
It is definitely a raw movie, I loved that the dialogue felt real and natural. I also thought the ending did give a hint of what was to happen, obviously the visa band was lifted. Anna came to LA, the first day she was on the computer looking for a job, catch that? I like to think it worked.
