The Suspect (2022)
Not the greatest adaptation
It is always difficult when you have read the books to agree with the way the story has been adapted for a TV show, and that is the case here. Michael Robotham's novel tell a big story and take his time doing it and 'The Suspect' the first in the series sets up the characters who will form the nucleus of the entire series of books. It is obviously hard to try and capture that adequately in a TV show when you don't have the luxury of that time.
Aidan Turner always a fav, does a good job as Joe, but he needs to as the surrounding characters just fall so short of what they are in his books. The character of Ruiz is so miscast. Imagine Gary Oldman in Slow Horses, and that to me is Vincent Ruiz, he is a brilliantly wry character in the books, in this he is just, there! As to are the wife and daughter Jullieanne and Charley characters. I thought this story was made for TV but it would seem I was wrong.
Elvis (2022)
Just a Great Movie
I guess you might have to be of a certain age, perhaps, to really appreciate this story of an absolute icon of music.
It was a true Baz Luhrman production with a lot going on, all the time, and that is what made it great. You were swept up in this huge story of a life lived in the turbulent times of shocking race discrimination, the beginning of the breakdown of straight laced 50's American values and a string of senseless assassinations.
Austin Butler was mesmerizing and Hanks was brilliant as the blood sucking manager.
Having grown up watching Elvis movies and seeing his gradual decline through young eyes I never imagined the reasons which contributed to this decline and his ultimate death at only 42.
I was desperately sad at the end of the film and it stayed with me for a long time.
Given the absolute rubbish that gets dished up in movies these days it was wonderful to be entertained for the whole length of a movie and be taken on a ride through the full gambit of emotions.
I hope that this movie gets the accolades it deserves.
Persuasion (2022)
Distracted interpretation
Everyone is panning Dakota Johnson in the media about her performance, but of all of the mishmash of characters, she was the only one worth watching.
Whoever picked Cosmo Jarvis to be the love interest of Dakota Johnson was well off the mark, there was absolutely no chemistry between them. Had this romantic pairing made you interested in whether they got together or not the movie MAY have been passable. However, I spent most of my time wondering what was wrong with Captain Wentworth and why he seemed so stiff if he bent off he would crack.
Also so over the distraction of political correctness which has ruined every period adaption in recent years. It is just the way of the world now but just stop doing period pieces and come up with an original modern idea that ticks all the boxes needed to get something made.
Just leave the classics to the past and the adaptations which have given us memorable performances which made you care about the characters.
Isn't it interesting that these older adaptations made without the focus on political correctness are the ones against which all these ridiculous new versions are compared and which come up woefully short by comparison.
