Atlas
24 May 2024
"Atlas," directed by Brad Peyton and starring Jennifer Lopez, is a 2024 Netflix sci-fi thriller that ventures into the intricate relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence. Lopez portrays Atlas Shepherd, a brilliant but reclusive data analyst deeply skeptical of AI. The narrative kicks off with her being recruited to track down a renegade robot, setting the stage for a gripping blend of action and existential drama.

The film's visual and thematic inspiration draws heavily from a range of sci-fi influences. Peyton, known for action-packed films like "San Andreas" and "Rampage," combines elements from "Titanfall" and "Cast Away," creating a unique sci-fi landscape that feels both familiar and fresh. The movie opens with an adrenaline-fueled sequence showcasing futuristic technology and the high stakes involved in Atlas's mission.

Lopez's performance as Atlas is central to the film's impact. Her character is initially portrayed as emotionally detached, her distrust of AI stemming from a traumatic past event that the movie gradually unveils. This backstory adds depth to her character, making her journey of reluctantly partnering with AI to save humanity more compelling. Lopez brings a nuanced portrayal to the role, balancing the character's toughness with moments of vulnerability and growth.

The supporting cast includes Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Lana Parrilla, and Mark Strong, each contributing to the film's dynamic ensemble. Liu plays a fellow team member who brings a contrasting optimism to Atlas's skepticism, while Brown and Parrilla provide additional layers of intrigue and tension. Strong's portrayal of the enigmatic antagonist adds to the film's suspense, his motives intertwined with the broader themes of AI and control.

"Atlas" explores significant philosophical questions about technology's role in society. The film delves into the ethical implications of AI, the potential for coexistence, and the fear of technological overreach. Peyton uses the sci-fi genre not just for spectacle but to provoke thought on these timely issues. The narrative is well-paced, balancing action sequences with moments of introspection, allowing the audience to reflect on the deeper messages embedded within the plot.

The film's production design deserves special mention, with its futuristic settings and high-tech gadgets effectively immersing the audience in its world. The visual effects are top-notch, particularly in scenes involving advanced robotics and space exploration. These elements are complemented by a moody, atmospheric score that heightens the tension and emotional resonance of key scenes.

However, "Atlas" is not without its flaws. Some critics point out that the storyline occasionally falls into familiar sci-fi tropes, and certain plot twists can be predictable. Additionally, while the film's ambition is commendable, it sometimes struggles to balance its action-packed sequences with the deeper philosophical questions it raises, leading to moments where the pacing feels uneven.

Despite these minor criticisms, "Atlas" stands out as a thought-provoking entry in the sci-fi genre. Its blend of action, emotional depth, and thematic exploration of AI's role in humanity's future offers a compelling viewing experience. Lopez's strong performance anchors the film, supported by a talented cast and impressive production values. For fans of sci-fi and those interested in the ethical dimensions of technology, "Atlas" provides both entertainment and a platform for reflection.

Overall, "Atlas" is a well-executed sci-fi thriller that succeeds in delivering both spectacle and substance, making it a notable addition to Netflix's original film catalog in 2024.

"American Fiction" (2023), directed by Cord Jefferson, is a satirical comedy that takes a sharp look at the commercialization of Black narratives in literature. The film stars Jeffrey Wright as Thelonious 'Monk' Ellison, a disillusioned author who, frustrated by the publishing industry's preference for stereotypical Black stories, writes a satirical novel under a pseudonym that unexpectedly becomes a bestseller.

Critics have praised the film for its insightful critique of the publishing industry's tendencies and its exploration of the African American experience. Jeffrey Wright delivers a standout performance, portraying Monk's internal struggles and frustrations with depth and nuance The supporting cast, including Sterling K. Brown and Tracee Ellis Ross, also contribute significantly, bringing humor and emotional weight to the family dynamics portrayed in the film.

Ruthless (2023)
6/10
Ruthless
23 May 2024
Director:** Art Camacho **Cast:** Dermot Mulroney, Melissa Diaz, Jeff Fahey, Mauricio Mendoza **Genre:** Action/Thriller

**Synopsis:** "Ruthless" tells the story of Harry, a high school wrestling coach played by Dermot Mulroney, who is grieving the brutal murder of his teenage daughter. When one of his students, Catia, is kidnapped by a human trafficking ring, Harry takes justice into his own hands, determined to rescue her and dismantle the trafficking operation. The plot of "Ruthless" is built on a foundation of personal loss and vengeance, reminiscent of films like "Taken." Despite its promising premise, the film suffers from weak and clichéd writing. The dialogue often feels forced and unnatural, detracting from the overall impact of the story. The narrative struggles to find its footing, leading to a somewhat predictable and derivative storyline.

Art Camacho, known for his work in low-budget action films, directs "Ruthless" with a focus on gritty realism. However, the film's production quality leaves much to be desired. The budget constraints are evident in the lack of polished action sequences and overall production design. The movie's tone and pacing are inconsistent, with significant lulls between the action scenes that fail to build adequate suspense

**Performances:** Dermot Mulroney delivers a committed performance as Harry, bringing a palpable sense of grief and determination to his character. However, his efforts are not enough to elevate the film above its shortcomings. Melissa Diaz, as Catia, also provides a noteworthy performance, though her character is not fully developed, often falling into stereotypical victim tropes. Jeff Fahey's portrayal of the villainous Dale Remington is serviceable but lacks depth.

**Action and Cinematography:** The action sequences, while present, are sparse and lack the intensity typically expected in a revenge thriller. When action does occur, it is often clunky and poorly choreographed, diminishing the film's potential impact. The cinematography fails to create the necessary atmosphere, often appearing flat and uninspired.

**Themes and Messages:** "Ruthless" attempts to tackle serious issues such as human trafficking and the quest for justice. While the film's intentions are commendable, its execution leaves much to be desired. The thematic exploration feels superficial, and the film does not engage deeply enough with its subject matter to leave a lasting impression.

**Overall:** "Ruthless" is a film with a compelling premise that ultimately falls short due to weak writing, inconsistent direction, and subpar production values. While Dermot Mulroney's performance is a highlight, it is not enough to overcome the film's numerous flaws. Fans of the action-thriller genre might find some moments of interest, but overall, "Ruthless" struggles to stand out in a crowded field.

The Sugarland Express
23 May 2024
**The Sugarland Express (1974)**

**Director:** Steven Spielberg **Starring:** Goldie Hawn, William Atherton, Ben Johnson, Michael Sacks

*The Sugarland Express* marks Steven Spielberg's feature film directorial debut, setting the stage for his illustrious career. This crime drama, based on a true story, blends action, humor, and pathos, showcasing Spielberg's early talent for storytelling and character development.

**Plot Summary:** The film follows Lou Jean Poplin (Goldie Hawn), a determined young woman who convinces her husband, Clovis (William Atherton), to escape from a minimum-security prison to help her reclaim their son from foster care. Their plan quickly spirals out of control when they hijack a police car and take a young patrolman, Slide (Michael Sacks), hostage. This triggers a statewide manhunt as they attempt to reach Sugarland, Texas, with law enforcement, led by Captain Harlin Tanner (Ben Johnson), hot on their trail.

**Performances:** Goldie Hawn delivers a standout performance as Lou Jean, showcasing a mix of charm, desperation, and unwavering determination. Her portrayal adds depth to a character that could easily have been one-dimensional. William Atherton provides a solid counterbalance as Clovis, displaying a blend of naivety and earnestness. Ben Johnson brings a seasoned presence to the role of Captain Tanner, embodying a lawman torn between duty and sympathy.

**Direction and Style:** Spielberg's direction is assured and innovative, featuring many hallmarks that would define his later work, such as dynamic camera movements, tight pacing, and a focus on character-driven storytelling. The film balances moments of tension with humor, often derived from the quirky interactions between the characters and the absurdity of their situation.

The cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond captures the expansive Texas landscapes, enhancing the film's sense of scale and the protagonists' sense of entrapment. John Williams' score, one of his early collaborations with Spielberg, adds an evocative layer to the film's emotional and narrative beats.

**Themes:** *The Sugarland Express* explores themes of family, desperation, and the unintended consequences of well-meaning actions. It also touches on the media's role in sensationalizing crime and the public's fascination with outlaw figures. The film humanizes its protagonists, inviting the audience to empathize with their plight even as their actions grow increasingly reckless.

**Reception:** Upon its release, *The Sugarland Express* received positive reviews for its direction, performances, and engaging narrative. It was praised for its blend of humor and drama, and Spielberg's handling of the story was seen as a promising indication of his future potential. While not as commercially successful as Spielberg's later blockbusters, the film solidified his reputation as a talented filmmaker to watch.

**Conclusion:** *The Sugarland Express* remains an important film in Spielberg's oeuvre, offering a glimpse of his emerging style and storytelling prowess. It's a compelling, well-crafted drama that benefits from strong performances, particularly from Goldie Hawn, and Spielberg's nascent but already distinctive directorial touch.

Mine (II) (2016)

Mine
19 May 2024
"Mine" is a 2016 psychological thriller directed by Fabio Guaglione and Fabio Resinaro. The film stars Armie Hammer as Mike Stevens, a U. S. Marine sniper who finds himself stranded in a desert after a mission goes wrong. The plot hinges on a tense and claustrophobic premise: Mike accidentally steps on a landmine and must remain stationary, waiting for rescue, while battling the elements, dehydration, hallucinations, and his own psychological demons.

The film is notable for its minimalistic approach, focusing intensely on Hammer's performance, which is a mix of physical endurance and emotional depth. As Mike, Hammer delivers a strong performance, conveying a range of emotions from despair to determination. The film delves into his backstory through flashbacks, revealing his strained relationship with his father and his fiancée, which adds layers to his character and enhances the narrative's emotional weight.

"Mine" excels in creating a sense of isolation and desperation. The desert setting is both beautiful and brutal, serving as a stark backdrop that amplifies Mike's struggle. The directors effectively use the vast, empty landscape to heighten the tension, making the viewer feel the character's loneliness and vulnerability.

The film's pacing, however, may be a point of contention for some viewers. The slow burn nature of the story can feel drawn out, and the repetitive scenes of Mike standing on the mine might test the patience of those expecting a more action-driven experience. Additionally, while the psychological aspects of the story are compelling, some of the flashbacks and hallucination sequences can feel a bit heavy-handed or clichéd.

Despite these criticisms, "Mine" is a gripping survival thriller that explores themes of resilience, mental fortitude, and redemption. Its unique premise and Armie Hammer's compelling performance make it a noteworthy film in the genre, even if it occasionally stumbles in its execution.

Overall, "Mine" is a thought-provoking and intense film that pushes its central character to the limits, both physically and mentally, and offers a poignant look at the human spirit's capacity to endure against overwhelming odds.

Cinderfella (1960)
8/10
Cinderfella, with Jerry Lewis
18 May 2024
"Cinderfella," directed by Frank Tashlin and starring Jerry Lewis, is a comedic twist on the classic Cinderella fairy tale. Released in 1960, the film showcases Lewis's unique brand of slapstick humor and his ability to imbue even the most outlandish characters with a sense of earnestness and heart.

The story follows Fella (Jerry Lewis), a downtrodden young man living with his wicked stepmother (Judith Anderson) and two stepbrothers (Henry Silva and Robert Hutton). Much like Cinderella, Fella is subjected to constant abuse and ridicule, relegated to menial tasks around the house while his stepfamily enjoys a life of luxury. However, his fortunes begin to change with the arrival of his fairy godfather (Ed Wynn), who helps him attend a lavish ball hosted by Princess Charmein (Anna Maria Alberghetti).

Jerry Lewis's performance is the film's highlight, blending his signature physical comedy with a surprising amount of pathos. His portrayal of Fella is both funny and sympathetic, making the character's plight relatable despite the absurdity of the situations he finds himself in. The physical gags are inventive and well-executed, showcasing Lewis's talent for visual humor. One memorable scene involves a prolonged, exaggerated attempt by Fella to walk down a grand staircase, which perfectly encapsulates Lewis's gift for turning simple actions into comedic set-pieces.

The supporting cast also delivers strong performances, particularly Judith Anderson as the over-the-top wicked stepmother. Her dramatic gravitas contrasts humorously with the film's lighter moments, adding depth to the otherwise straightforward villainous role. Ed Wynn's turn as the fairy godfather provides a whimsical and endearing presence, while Anna Maria Alberghetti's Princess Charmein is charming and appropriately fairy tale-like.

Frank Tashlin's direction complements Lewis's comedic style, utilizing vibrant Technicolor and imaginative set designs that enhance the fairy tale atmosphere. Tashlin's background in animation is evident in the film's playful visual gags and exaggerated sequences, which often feel like live-action cartoons.

Despite its comedic strengths, "Cinderfella" does have moments where the pacing slows, particularly in the buildup to the ball. Some of the humor may feel dated to modern audiences, relying heavily on slapstick and broad characterizations. However, these elements are balanced by the film's heartwarming resolution and Lewis's endearing performance.

Overall, "Cinderfella" is a delightful and entertaining take on a classic story, elevated by Jerry Lewis's comedic genius and the film's imaginative direction. It remains a testament to Lewis's talent and a charming entry in the pantheon of 1960s comedy films.

Hatari! (1962)

Hatari
18 May 2024
"Hatari!" is a 1962 adventure film directed by Howard Hawks, starring John Wayne, Elsa Martinelli, and Hardy Krüger. The movie, set in Tanganyika (modern-day Tanzania), revolves around a group of professional game catchers who capture animals for zoos around the world.

John Wayne plays Sean Mercer, the rugged leader of the group. His performance is quintessential Wayne-stoic, tough, and charismatic. Mercer is surrounded by a colorful cast of characters, each bringing their own unique flavor to the story. Elsa Martinelli stars as Anna Maria 'Dallas' D'Alessandro, a spirited Italian photographer who joins the team, adding a romantic subplot that injects a bit of warmth and humor into the narrative.

One of the standout features of "Hatari!" is its stunning cinematography. The film was shot on location in Tanganyika, providing breathtaking vistas of the African landscape. Cinematographer Russell Harlan captures the beauty and danger of the wild with remarkable skill, making the setting almost a character in itself.

The animal capture scenes are particularly notable for their authenticity and excitement. Howard Hawks opted for real animal chases instead of relying on special effects, lending a sense of realism and immediacy to these sequences. This choice adds an adventurous and, at times, tense atmosphere to the film, drawing viewers into the high-stakes world of the game catchers.

The film also features a memorable musical score by Henry Mancini, including the famous "Baby Elephant Walk." Mancini's music complements the film's adventurous spirit and light-hearted moments, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

"Hatari!" is not without its flaws. The pacing can feel slow at times, especially for modern audiences accustomed to faster-moving plots. Additionally, some character interactions and humor may come across as dated. However, these aspects are balanced by the film's charm, stunning visuals, and engaging animal action sequences.

Overall, "Hatari!" is a delightful adventure film that showcases John Wayne in one of his more unique roles outside the typical Western genre. It's a visually captivating movie with a blend of humor, romance, and thrilling action that makes it a memorable piece of classic cinema.

Troll
16 March 2024
The new blockbuster hit Troll has taken cinemas by storm with its thrilling tale about a powerful creature awakened after centuries of slumber to unleash chaos across modern civilization. Despite mixed reviews regarding certain aspects like character development and screenplay quality for instance how realistic are those fight choreographies really?, fans seem generally pleased judging off Rotten Tomatoes' fresh rating which stands at ninety percent based upon thirty plus opinions. This film was extremely fantastic and awesome. The songs were so perfect and catchy, the voice acting from the cast for each character was excellent and the character development in the film was interesting and very great. The animation was colourful. The writing and screenplay were good and not as bad as I thought it would be. There were some heartfelt messages and emotional scenes that made me cry from the inside, and the movie was somehow hilarious and heartwarming.

Reuniting with your long-lost family members, reconciling with them, making up for the bad times you've had in past and the love that you felt for them are the reasons that make you strong and realise being who you are now together with them is how you live in harmony. Letting go of the past, healing yourself in the present and being the person that you are is what it means to have a brighter future. This film may not be as nearly successful as The Bad Guys or Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, but I'm sure it will get more positive reviews from critics and be famous in its own right.

I love how the writers and the director decided to make Branch the main protagonist of the threequel by focusing more on his background and character. I've loved Justin Timberlake's voice-acting performance as this character. Seeing Branch being happier than he was in the first two films, now that he's with his four older brothers, his girlfriend and future wife Poppy and her older sister Viva, makes me think this is the type of Troll he should be. I hope that in the future Trolls films will continue to focus more on Branch's background, his future goals and more romantic #Broppy moments. And I'd like to say that Floyd, Branch's closest and most honourable brother, is becoming one of my favourite characters of the franchise, along with Branch, Poppy and Viva. He's talented, intelligent, sensitive, sometimes shy and sarcastic, sweet, clever, kind, loving, wise, compassionate, understanding and forgiving. I see him as the calmer and more caring version of Branch and Poppy. Making BroZone based on Justin Timberlake's old band reminds people from the 1990s how much they love boy bands, which is why this film is not only for children but for people who loved their time in the 90s. The film reviving Justin Timberlake's old band NSYNC after 22 years of hiatus is what people wanted. And their comeback song 'Better Place' is a phenomenal and smashing single, which is why it deserves more global recognition worldwide. I loved seeing them together as trolls performing the song with Branch (Justin Timberlake) and his brothers at the end. I wish to see the returning characters from the previous two films and more new characters, voiced by more iconic and modern-day pop stars, in the future sequels.

"Lights Out" offers a gritty and compelling narrative, anchored by strong performances from its lead actors. Frank Grillo's portrayal of Michael "Duffy" Duffield, a homeless veteran drawn into the dangerous world of underground fight clubs, is both nuanced and intense. Likewise, Mekhi Phifer shines as Max Bomer, the street-smart ex-convict who recruits Duffy into this perilous lifestyle.

The action sequences are well-executed, showcasing Duffy's prowess as a fighter while also highlighting the brutality and ruthlessness of the underground fight scene. Directorial choices effectively build tension, keeping audiences engaged from start to finish.

While the plot occasionally relies on familiar tropes of the crime genre, the dynamic character development and unpredictable twists keep the narrative fresh and engaging. The inclusion of Sage Parker, the crime boss, and Ellen Ridgway, the corrupt police officer, adds layers to the story, raising the stakes for Duffy and Max.

Overall, "Lights Out" is a gripping thriller that delivers on both action and drama. With its compelling characters, intense fight scenes, and suspenseful plot twists, it's sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats until the very end.
