Mike & Molly (2010)
Started off strong
Being a plus size woman with an equally plus size husband, this show was highly relatable and I liked how they balanced it without stressing upon their weight problems but also highlighted their struggles with regular daily issues.
However, the show jumped the shark with the episode where SPOILER ALERT! They got married. Perhaps they wanted to show how it overcame everyone there, but the thing between Carl & Christina was really unnecessary. Afterwards, they shifted a lot more of the focus on him but it was neither funny nor endearing as Carl became really off putting. They could have written some really good stories of him bouncing back into the dating pool, but they instead focused on his lovelorn ways which became really annoying as it stretched out more than a few episodes.
Cleo King was fantastic as Carl's grandmother, but she had few lines and was mostly a guest star or supporting character of sorts, which was ironic since she had the best lines and the funniest ones too.
Similarly, Mike's and Carl's African immigrant friend Samuel was also the funniest but had fewer lines. They really missed the mark on him, as after Mike and Molly got married, they could have written about Carl's and Samuel's dating misadventures, which they did for a bit, but there was so much room for more which they didn't utilise. It was such a wasted opportunity.
All in all, the first few seasons were fun, but the show jumped the shark & I wasn't suprised they got cancelled after a while.
Rules of Engagement (2007)
It has such promise
The sitcom started off solid, and had such promise but then went off the rails after a while.
While the funniest was definitely Patrick Warburton, the other couple played by Oliver Hudson and Bianca Kajlich weren't as funny as he was but they were alright. After all, they could only work what was given to them & if what was given wasn't up to par, then there wasn't much they could do with it. Megyn Price, who played Audrey provided a very nice balance to Jeff's sarcastic humour and they made a rather believeable couple so kudos to that pairing.
I highly disagree with some other reviews which stated the 'greatness' of David Spade, who was anything BUT funny. They also tried to make him sort of the 'Joey' of the group i.e. The single guy who was morally corrupt but was actually a lovable member of the tribe. He was nothing like that, and his jokes, innuendo's and overall behaviour grew increasingly worse, especially after the arrival of Timmy who was far funnier than he was. Now, whenever I watch the re runs, I switch the channel when he comes onto the screen as I am so disgusted by the sight of him.
All in all, they could have been so much better had they not have the Russell (David Spade) character in the series. While some sitcoms balance their characters beautifully, this one didn't and really missed the mark. It's such a shame because the rest of them did try their best.
