Your Place or Mine (2023)
One of the worst movies I have ever seen
Honestly. I am done with new movies.
This movie felt like a parody at times. I should've known better when I saw the intro that takes place in 2003, with the movie telling us "why it's in 2003", pointing out typical things from the era.
I like chick flicks and some of my favorite cozy movies include some classic rom com titles from the 90's and early 2000's. This movie however, has some serious problems.
One issue is the age. Some of my favorite rom-coms have people in their 20-30s exploring life and its issue. In this movie, the age of the main actors seem inapropriate for this type of movie by now. They're both 45-50 years old and it's really time to just give up their personas and try something new, because it's not working well.
While we're at trying something new - how about trying something else than the typical NYC or LA setting? We get it. NYC has a lot of people, stressful, less friendly, trendy, whatever. LA is more down-to-earth (but is it really? No), with people being a lot more friendly and open. I've seen this concept before in other movies - Friends With Benefits to name one - and they did it a lot better. It's an overused concept and for people outside USA like me, it just seems desperate by now. USA is huge and movies can be set elsewhere to give a different view for once.
The plot itself is going on autopilot. Nothing unexpected happens. We have the typical plot and I think we all could guess what the ending scene would be like a couple of minutes in the movie. I don't expect much of a rom-com so this is where the only point comes in. They followed a concept that is fool proof.
Everything about this movie feels so washed out. The gardener is a typical example of a character that's supposed to be a whimsical and weird fool, but only ends up being cringe-worthy and I think we've seen it many times before, but better. The dialogues are strange and cartoonish. Do people really talk the way they talk in this movie? Cliche after cliche...
The ending was terrible with the white text showing up, explaining what happened. It was quite possibly the worst ending I have witnessed. The director should try something else.
I am done with new movies, especially American ones from Netflix. They are not what they used to be. Ever since streaming became the main media, the quality has dropped significantly. Netflix doesn't care if their movies go to the dogs, since they're just streaming it. And this one will not be remembered in a couple of months. It's a shame really, and it mirrors our society better than ever. Get used to the lowest quality possible, because that's what we paid for.
Friendzone (2021)
How to avoid the friendzone 101
The story of a young man who does not know how to woo women. He ends up in the friendzone a lot. His friends guide him how to be more confident. Entertaining and romantic, even a little educating for young men. I liked the actors and the humour. The main plot is nothing new but it's made differently.
However, I found the break-up scene unnecessarily violent. I thought gender equality meant equal rights? But apparently, it's legitimate for a woman to floor a man with kicks and punches over a break-up.
