Family Guy: Screams of Silence: The Story of Brenda Q (2011)
Huh???
Even if the subject matter weren't handled with the delicacy of a toddler on roller skates ("it only hurts when I see!" and so on), people don't watch this annoying ass show to see anything remotely close to emotionally resonant, which this tries to be and fails miserably.
Literally haven't seen this episode in close to ten years but I remember hating it so much and so many little bits of it that just annoyed the hell out of me. Just so incredibly ignorant to the real issues it attempts to address while simultaneously being unable to decide if it wants to play the topic of domestic abuse as straight and real or light and comedic.
Either one of those would have been a horrible turn for this series, which had already been on the air for about three years too long by this point. Bad excuse for a television episode.
The Boys: The Instant White-Hot Wild (2022)
Much Ado About....Something? Maybe?
As has been documented thoroughly in other reviews on here, this season marked a turn for The Boys in that it trades its irresistible sense of momentum and stakes for wheel-spinning and elongation. Doesn't hold a candle to the season 2 finale, which left the physical and (in the case of Homelander and Butcher) mental wellbeing in the balance and opened the door to a thousand more interesting conflicts.
However, it feels as though the show runners opted for none of those and instead chose to bring the goose chase back for another eight unfocused episodes. Perhaps this season needed a little more time in the oven? Some of the action set pieces that aren't overly reliant on the use of CGI are a pretty clear indicator of that, all quick-cuts and shaky cam in place of actual stunt choreography.
This finale isn't all bad, I still think it leaves the story in a place that leaves me intrigued to find out what happens next, but season 4 absolutely NEEDS to move things along a little more or I fear this becoming another Dexter or Lost, a riveting and massively popular series that doesn't know when to pump the brakes on the money train. I understand that an absolute bombshell IP like this is exceedingly rare in today's oversaturated streaming market, and thus would lead Amazon to want to leave it running as long as possible (and spin-offs, oh so many spin-offs), but we've seen time and time again that that can often tarnish the public's perception and recollection of an otherwise great show.
So yeah not the worst thing I've seen, but the time has come for some significant change.
