There Will Be Blood (2007)
Why god, why so boring?
The fact that cinema's quality is in the gutters, does not mean we have to embrace "different" movies, even if they are plain boring.
Except for DDL performance there is nothing special about There Will Be Blood, except for such misleading reviews as some of the ones I read here. Cinematography was boring. OK so there were long shots brilliantly blocked, but did they help the story advance? no, they didn't. It was a mishmash of ideas that created expectations which were all unrealized during the movie.
I went to see this movie as I love DDL and I also love period movies. For me, there is something special in a slow told story, with long shots that let you delve in into the characters subtleties and the total energy of the setting. IN this movie though, there is no real story. In the theater I kept telling my self, 'it cant be it. Something must happen eventually' but the only thing to happen was just another brilliant agonized look from Lewis and maybe another weird and over the top piece of music.
Sorry guys, but the story is not there, I left the movie without knowing anything about the characters and there lives. In fact, most shots are spent stuck on Lewis in close-up. We really don't get a chance to get to know any one, even not Daniel, as he is too flat as written on the script. Lewis had to take him to an extreme in order to give the narrative a bit of interest, but quick enough you realize that nothing surprising will happen.
A good try to make something different, but not good enough. I'm still waiting for the reinvention of cinema.
Zidane, un portrait du 21e siècle (2006)
Boring as hell!!! And I worship Zidane.
The guys who made this movie got it so wrong. They actually show Zidane as a tired static player and not the football god he is.
Zidane is my idol for many years and what makes him a great player is: 1. his absolute vision of whats going on on the football field 2. His abilities to make the players around him better.
Yes, he's got amazing control of the ball and elegant movements that wont put to shame even a ballet dancer. But thats not it. For example, to show the amazing abilities of the conductor Zubin Mehta, you wont film him waving his hands for an hour of a silence movie. You must record his orchestra and show the connection between the conductor's brilliance and its outcome on his "TEAM" of musicians. The same goes to Zidan.
It is pretty obvious that the film makers here, do not understand football and what really made Zidane the amazing player he is. They showcase a too long, too static performance, mostly in close ups. Most of the time you don't know where Zidane is located on the pitch, or how does he reacts to the opponents formation or plays.
Sorry. Nice try but the results are poor and boring.
