Gone Girl (2014)
Poor realization of a pretty good idea
The idea of a wife disappearing and framing her husband for the murder really has a lot of potential. And the idea of the wife getting back to him after all that, even more. Unfortunately, this film didn't make the most of it, mainly because the plot is rattled with holes. Even if the police and the FBI agents were complete idiots, there are things that make the story extremely unconvincing. The diary didn't burn entirely. After the wife appears in the end, there are no signs of wounds that would have caused such excessive bleeding consistent with the marks in the kitchen. And I don't think people get released from the hospital all covered in blood. Amy's story in the end, when she talks to the police in the hospital makes absolutely no sense and it is really hard to believe the FBI agents accepted it just like that. These minor details all add up to make the movie seem entirely unrealistic and sloppy.
Overall, it was too long for what it has to offer. It could have been a suspenseful thriller with a double plot twist, if only the details were thought through more carefully.
Her (2013)
Human connection
Even after I've finished watching it, I wasn't sure whether I liked it or not, it is just completely out of the ordinary and leaves me with a strange feeling. Now that the impressions have settled, I believe it is one of the finest and warmest films I've seen.
At first, I thought how this cannot possibly be good, since the operating system the film has presented is completely out of touch with reality, no artificial intelligence is so advanced and it is so hard to believe it ever will be, but I don't want to look at the story just thinking how it depicts the modern technology today or in some near future and how it affects us, because I think of Samantha as a character with a little over exaggerated characteristics, maybe even a caricature.
What I find interesting is how everyone thought it was completely normal to date an OS. And the girl who voluntarily wanted to be a part of their relationship only suggests that no matter the circumstances, no matter how estranged the technology makes us, the human need to connect always remains. And everyone is in it together, they don't judge each other.
Every scene was amazing, Theodore's style only adds another reason to love this film. And I think Joaquin Phoenix fits pretty nicely, his performance makes his relationship to Samantha feel credible. He gives off the impression of a really sweet and sensitive person.
Carnage (2011)
What are we still doing here? Go home.
I was really excited about this film. The cast was very promising and seeing its pretty high ratings - I really thought this was going to be something.
The cast was not the thing that disappointed me. Actually, they were OK. The writing bas just plain flat. The reasons that made the Cowans stay at Longstreets' apartment were unbelievably dumb. Throughout the entire film, all I could think about was "why don't they just pack their things and go home?" It defies logic, which makes this film so unconvincing. I read somewhere that Carnage is supposed to be funny. The story is so stretched, it couldn't possibly be funny. And Penelope Longstreet's reactions somewhere in the middle of the story, when she starts screaming at her husband for some idiotic reasons were also unconvincing. Not that Jodie Foster is not a great actress, but the writing blew it up. The only thing that kind of enlivens the plot is when Nancy throws up on Penelope's catalogs. That could have been funny, but it's not. The story won't provide the answer why was Nancy sick, or why is she so sympathetic with the hamster and many other "plot holes".
The film is just plain boring. I couldn't wait for it to be over.
The American (2010)
Very slow and quiet - brilliant
I've watched it on TV and had no idea what it was about, so I had no expectations. I actually decided to watch the film because of Anton Corbijn. I am a big fan of Depeche Mode and I adore their videos.
First of all, the film was really pretty. All the slow scenes showing Italian architecture and scenery were quite soothing. I'm surprised by the low rating of this title, but I understand most people just find it to be boring. I like slow films. The American really gives you the chance to just let go and flow with it for nearly two hours. It leaves you enough space to let your thoughts wander a little bit so you don't lose track of the plot. I found that quite pleasant. And it won't give you some straightforward wisdom or any kind of life lesson. I've just finished watching it, I'll probably think about it some more in the next few days. I certainly wasn't bored, on the contrary, I think the slow plot actually builds the suspense, because the film is very quiet and every sound gets your attention.
The acting doesn't really have to be praised, it's George Clooney just being great. This film just got really high up my list of favorite films I've seen. I hope The American won't be forgotten and pushed away as some "boring film no plot". If you like good films, don't trust the bad reviews.
Dexter (2006)
Our new favorite superhero
It's funny how so many people can relate to the character of a serial killer. It's true that maybe we don't all have the urge to kill someone from time to time, but I think anyone who has ever experienced any kind of passion or weird childhood can understand him. It takes you on a roller-coaster of human emotions, moral laws, religion and the justice system.
He is definitely a superhero. He has his kill-outfit, kills by night, has a secret identity, childhood issues and he fights for justice. And that is probably one of the reasons people actually like him, even though his actions make this show the kind of thing your mother wouldn't want you to watch on TV.
Michael C. Hall's portrayal of Dexter is outstanding. Just hearing the monologues gives you the chills. Other characters are so-so. I especially didn't like the character of Rita Bennett and maybe it's good she's gone, because it has opened many new doors for Dexter's characterization.
The sixth season was OK, but not as good as the previous ones. Throughout the whole season the story progression was too slow and when it became a bit dull, they finished it off in the last 2-3 episodes. I just hope the writers will finish the story before they ruin it, if they're already out of ideas.
All in all, it's my favorite show, that's for sure. The most exciting thing on TV.
Husbands and Wives (1992)
A documentary on human relationships
I have to review this title and I don't do that very often. I've just finished watching this film for the first time and as a Woody fan I can say that this one is probably the best I've seen so far.
I like how the camera is so "easy", the whole film seems like a home video which makes it even more realistic and the characters discussing their feelings with the audience really gets you involved.
At time it seems too ironic, but I like it like that. It has some great "the meaning of life" moments and those arguing scenes make it so funny.
Watch this film, you might even learn something from it.
Tron: Legacy (2010)
Great soundtrack
When I first wanted to see this film I had no idea it had any connection to the game. I was bored so I picked a random film to watch in the cinema that night.
I love science fiction, but this was just funny at some points. The plot is full of holes, I wasn't able to get the full picture about "the grid", because the story was just poorly interpreted. The cast was OK, honestly I didn't expect anything serious from this kind of film.
The soundtrack left a really special impression on me. I was thrilled to see Daft Punk playing. I nearly started to dance on my seat, it was really something. Overall, the film looks nice, I mean it had to be spectacular, it's sci-fi :)
If you are a big fan of the game, you'll probably be thrilled and you might like it, but not me.
I cannot rate it higher than 4, because I think it is the maximum this film deserves. The soundtrack cannot make the film much better, can it?
Sunshine Cleaning (2008)
Don't
I was enthusiastic about this film, but I must say it has left me disappointed. Now, I'm not a writer, or any kind of professional, but I like a good movie. This is not a good movie.
The acting leaves no impression. Both actresses look pretty much the same, so it was difficult for me in the beginning to distinguish which is which.
The plot had no twists, all they did was cry and get nervous. The whole film left me a bit nervous, not because the scenes were disturbing, but because its characters were always so edgy.
The ending is no better. When the movie finished, I was like: "This is it?" I wouldn't recommend it. No deep plot, no deep acting, this is all just someone trying to create something deep. Well, it didn't work out.
12 Angry Men (1957)
Good characters, but predictable
I didn't know much about the movie before I started to watch it, except the fact that everyone says it's one of the best movies ever. When that one member of the jury said he thinks the boy is not guilty, I instantly knew that he is going to convince the other 11 members to believe that by the end of the movie. I think the plot is good and that I couldn't know HOW he is going to make them believe that, but it wasn't really exciting for me. On the other hand, I liked the way they think and how they pay great attention to the details. They are all great actors and great characters, nicely built. I give this film 7/10 because of the story, characters, the acting, but I definitely don't think it's really that stunning, nor a masterpiece. I just wasn't thrilled enough.
Not Like Everyone Else (2006)
This was supposed to be something deep, right?
Is it really possible that so many people in this film believe that the girl is a witch? Just because she has dark hair and wears dark make up she is supposed to be a witch? And I got the impression that the film tries to present her as someone who is "different", someone nobody understands... She is just a teenager and some dumb girl in her high school says she is a witch and everyone believes her. Besides, Brandi is either portrayed very badly or the character itself is made to be so... Fake. She didn't convince me that she is not a witch, not that I would believe it in the first place. Everyone accuses her of being a witch and she acts like she is not entirely sure whether she is a witch or not. And the way they dressed her for the court - I see old ladies every day who wouldn't wear that even if it was the last outfit in the world! Brandi's brother also wasn't very convincing... But, you see, the important thing is, that "she put that bad, bad girl back on to the ground at the end of the film". "She has won the battle, proved to everyone she is different".
This is probably one of the worst films I've watched in may life, way too shallow. I only watched it because there was nothing else on the TV at the moment, so I was condemned to this trash. Please, do not waste your time watching this film. When I saw the 7-star rating, I nearly fainted... It doesn't deserve it, compared to some other films which are also rated with 7 stars.
The Notebook (2004)
Overrated
Before I watched this movie, I was looking for a nice drama to watch and since everyone was telling me that this is such a great and wonderful and warm and fuzzy and emotional film, I gave it a shot. During those two hours I was just waiting for something great to happen. I thought the movie was going to be remarkable, exceptional and all that, but I am very disappointed. I think this movie is just a cliché after a cliché. The guy is poor and she is rich and her parents won't let her be with him - what a classic. Of course she is all nice and doesn't know how to have fun in a way only he knows - doing irrational things which are supposed to make the characters feel as if that's the only right way to enjoy their "love" - lying in the middle of the road (I don't think so). And that is supposed to be fun. After 2 minutes, I knew that the old man and the old lady are actually Noah and Allie... There are no quotes to remember, nothing interesting and unexpected. Of course, I guess we all knew she will come back to him in the end, because she loves him - dirty, dumb guy with whom she fights all the time. It is obvious that she is only physically attracted to him, she acts like a really stupid girl. I have to admit that her fiancé is a little too perfect, kind of phony. I gave this movie 3 stars, because it isn't all that bad. It did make me feel tender in the end, but only a bit, nothing spectacular. I just don't understand how people keep falling for these things over and over again. It certainly does not deserve a 10. And I apologize if I didn't spell everything right, because English is not my native language...
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Not really impressed...
I only watched this movie because I heard that it was great. I don't know much about the Coen brothers and the fact that this is their film doesn't been a thing to me.
I think that the basic idea, the story about a guy who comes across a bunch of dead bodies, drugs and 2 million dollars, is quite good. Javier Bardem is very good, convincing. And I like the part when everyone start chasing him, just because he went back to give that guy some water. The first half is tense, interesting and just when I thought that this movie is really that great, I got disappointed. The first half is actually good and interesting, but the second half... Help me, I'm lost.
In the second half, I cannot memorize all the characters, they all look the same to me and I don't even know who they are or what they're after. I get it that it's all about the money, but it's just all confusing. Maybe I just didn't quite understand this movie, but I wouldn't be 100% sure of that, because even if this is the big "Coen brothers" movie and they're all talented, there are things in this movie that just seem like they don't belong here. For example, the title, "No country for old men", I don't really know why it's called that way or what does it has to do with the sheriff's dream in the last scene. The ending was poor. I just sat there for a few seconds wondering: "This is it?" And the old guy in the wheelchair, is he supposed to be some kind of a wise man? Or how did Anton escape when sheriff came back to the scene of the crime after Llewelyn's death? And when did Anton get a chance to kill them all (the girl by the pool, Llewelyn and all the other guys around)? I watched it twice, and I'm considering watching it five times if necessary, but I think that, even if I watch this movie 100 times, I'm still not gonna like it...
I thought this movie was a lot better.
