Road House (2024)
Fun action movie
I'm an older person, and enjoyed the original, so my expectations were low. It's a fun little action movie, though. It's not Shakespeare or anything, but it's very enjoyable, and I think a lot of the hate it's getting is because people won't let go of the original or just hate Conor MacGregor. Personally, I don't understand why you can't like both movies, but I guess some people are just looking for a reason to be hateful.
It's lighthearted fun with some cool fights. It isn't a remake of the original, just has some similarities. Jake Gyllenhaal is very fun and engaging and looks good. If you're looking for some entertainment that doesn't require a lot of thought, this is a good choice.
Jack Reacher (2012)
Completely ludicrous
I have read almost every Reacher book, and Tom Cruise is completely unrealistic as Reacher. The fact they chose to name the movie Jack Reacher shows they don't care at all about the source material. Not only does everyone in this movie not care at all about the personality of Reacher, only someone as arrogant and delusional as Tom Cruise could believe being a shrimp who's a full foot shorter than the character could ever be at all credible. One of the most important aspects of Reacher is that he's a huge guy who doesn't care about his attire or appearance. You can't tell this story with tiny little pompous conceited cop who has fake teeth. Tim cruise isn't Reacher. He's just lame.
Keep Your Head Up, Kid: The Don Cherry Story (2010)
Keeso is a good actor but can't redeem the subject
I guess Don Cherry is a Canadian icon, but the whole movie is about how unlikeable he was and how he wouldn't do what it actually took to get to the NHL. He even acknowledges that it's bad for his wife and kid, but he still continually acts obstinate and does stupid things that keep him out of the NHL. He also lets his wife and child starve in a strange hotel room while he drinks. His wife even says the Don couldn't get along with the owner of the team. His wife was a saint, but definitely deserved better. Why do people like this guy? I found him so unlikeable that I couldn't finish the movie. I like Keeso - I enjoy him in Letterkenny - and I was sure I would like him here, but Don Cherry is so obnoxious that even Keeso can't make him appealing.
13 Minutes (2021)
Awful, pointless film
As far as I can tell, this movie is an exercise in determining how many complete douchebags you can have in one movie before the audience gives up. Without giving too much away, let's just say that I could have enjoyed it if these total scumbags got what they deserved, but they don't. In fact, I'd say that the filmmakers must agree with the dirtbags, because there is no judgment, implied or explicit, of these losers.
If you want to watch a movie with a large ensemble cast of characters that includes about four decent human beings and a plethora of slimeballs, this is the movie for you.
One star for being a movie because that's the minimum, one for a coherent plot, and one for okay production values. It barely deserves such a high rating.
