Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
Overlooked comedy of 2001
I held off watching Jay and Silent bob strike back basically because I heard a lot of bad reviews about it and didn't want to believe that Smith had sunk into the relm of Stoner comedy. However I was plesently surprised on viewing this. Okay it's more Mallrats than Chasing Amy but Jay and Silent Bob is a Light hearted attack on the Hollywood system. Often the film labels itself as a bad stoner movie as Characters ask "who would want to see a bad stoner movie2 and then stare and smile directly into the camera. Jay and Bob stumble their may into Hollywood in order to prevent a "bad" movie about their comic book alter egos "Bluntman and Chronic" being made. It's easy to see why critics not fimilar with the Kevin Smith series would want to hate this. Jay is a no brain stoner who flukes his way through life. But Jay and Bobs real appeal comes from performances of Ben Affleck and Jason Lee. Now I wouldn't normally approve of Affleck but he uses Jay and Bob to constuct a parody of himself and the hollywood system. Afflect and Damon pair up for a bloody action sequel to Good Will Hunting (Hunting Sequel) In which he over hears the film crew discussing the previous appearences of Dead hookers in his caravan. He screams out "Ah ha! I wasn't even with a Hooker today!". Even Gus Van Saint gets in on the action as the disinterested director of Hunting Season. "What an Artist," Afflect and Damon croon. All in all there are a lot worse movies than this and even though only die hard Smith fans will really apprieciate it's still not as bad as uninformed critics made it out to be.
American Pie 2 (2001)
Where's the pie?
A slightly more over the top and over glamorous sequel to the pie humping original. Pie 2 is still packed with great one liners and jokes. There are few better teen comedies than the American Pie series.
The Fast and the Furious (2001)
Probably worse than Driven
Once the trailer for this tripe had past my eyes I knew I was in trouble and it was only a matter of time before one of my less liked and mis-guided friends recommended this film to me.
When will Hollywood learn. Racing movies are gung-ho trite. They are not even entertaining for there cheesey chliche material. Don't get me wrong I am a bit of a petrol head myself. I sit here typing this wearing my Jaguar racing shirt, but these movies must die.
Friends of mine started defending this by say things like, "Oh but you only see these films for the cars, action and jaunty camera angles." Let me put this into perspective for you the "Bad guys" drive Honda Civics. My Girlfriend knows that Honda Civics aren't cool. My girlfriends parents own Honda Civics, they are 72 and 59. They did not purchase their Honda Civic because they thought it was a "Bad Ass Piece of Machinery". No matter how much nitro flames (the action) come from a Honda Civic does it become cool. Blurry camera shots also do not make this film. I'm not even gonna bother going into the plot because I find it affensive to human beings.
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
"Best film since The Breakfast Club."
Those of you who keep slating this movie should stick to watching "The Breakfast Club" with intervals which feature episodes of "Friends"
Lynch has constructed a thick slab of beautifully shot dark film noir comedy. Oddball scenes are tremendously funny, the cowboy is hilariously outta sink and the twist on Hollywood is remarkably dark and scary.
Who is that dirty trap behind the diner? And whats in the metaphorical box?
Lynch should always keep you thinking why?
Chasing Amy (1997)
Razzor sharp wit from Smith
I love this film for one reason. Kevin Smith manages to create a Romantic comedy (God I hate using that term in context to this film) without being sentimental and girlly and at the same time avoids becoming and episode of Friends. Smith finally creates a personal story pumped full of his razzor sharp wit that is so individual to his films.
Best Romantic comedy of all time razzor sharp comedy.
Smith is great!
