History's Greatest Heists with Pierce Brosnan (2023)
Done Well, Interesting
After watching many movies about with these kinds of heists (Ocean's Eleven, The Italian Job, even Goodfellas for the Lufthansa heist) it was cool to see how these people actually managed to steal millions, if not billions, of dollars from various places.
Yes, the reenactment can be a little cheesy at some points, but overall it's really fascinating and does a good job of diving into the logistics and planning behind these massive robberies.
The interviews are great, and they got a diverse cast of people - from actual criminals who were involved in the heist, to cops that were on the investigation and witnesses who were there when it was happening. While the narration is a little choppy, it doesn't downgrade this at all.
The Martian (2015)
A Well-Crafted Sci-Fi Movie That Does So Many Things Right
This movie hit so many marks. It is funny consistently at the right times, while also being dramatic and making the audience care about the characters, hoping for their safety.
The acting in this, as always with Matt Damon, is incredible. His delivery of the jokes is on point, and he really makes you relate to him. He's got the sense of humor accompanied by this real threat that he could die any day (or SOL) now.
Overall, this movie is put together really well. It has good pacing, a good plot (and plot twists), good acting, good CGI and it shines at bringing out emotions in you - specifically emotions of fear and stress. Definitely worth a watch, and maybe a rewatch.
Shutter Island (2010)
Takes the term "psychological thriller" to the next level!
This movie is...wow. It is really incredible how well this movie is made. It definitely leaves its mark, makes you question what was going on the whole time.
First off, the acting was incredible. The whole plot of this movie is based around this guy, and Leonardo DiCaprio gave a stellar performance that really made you believe everything that was happening.
The writing and plot of this movie was also incredible, and I will never think of a psychological thriller in the same way after this.
I had high hopes coming into this movie - mostly because all the other amazing Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio collabs - and it definitely delivered.
This movie leaves a mark, one that you will remember for a while after watching this movie.
Goodfellas (1990)
I Was Speechless After Watching This
I just watched this movie. A brilliant director, combined with an amazing cast...I knew this movie was going to be good. But I didn't know just how good it was going to be.
This movie is one of the best movies I've seen, placing you in the moment, letting you feel the emotion, and pulling you into the story. The brutal, intense, thrilling story of Henry Hill.
After the movie was over, I sat there for several moments, just mindlessly watching the credits roll. I was stunned. No movie has forced me to feel so strongly about something like that, and it's the best feeling.
This movie is amazing on so many levels, and is one of the best I've seen.
Dunkirk (2017)
You Know It's An Amazing Film When...
You know it's an amazing film when you're on the she of your seat, about to fall off while also holding on so tightly your knuckles are turning white.
This is how I felt with so many moments of this film. It's truly gripping, exciting, nerve-wracking.
There is beauty in every shot because of how gritty and realistic it is, not to mention the amazing cinematography.
Yes, character's back stories can be interesting, but not having that didn't take anything major away from the film, and you still understood the life threatening situation these characters are in, connecting with them just the same.
This movie was excellently done (as all of Christopher Nolan's films are) and I wish I had the chance to see it on IMAX.
Every minute of it is packed with intensity, emotion, and fear. That makes this a great war film.
Inside Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer (2023)
Comprehensive, Informative, and Interesting
For being a documentary about the making of Oppenheimer, this is really good. Better, I've found, than everything else out there.
They've got interviews with all the major people in or behind the film, and it is pieced together nicely and efficiently.
It was entertaining and interesting to see Christopher Nolan's experiences and thoughts about the film and what it says. It's also not one of those annoying documentaries that don't really add anything, as I found that this added a good amount of backstory to the movie, and made me appreciate certain things in it more.
My one complaint is that it could've been longer and really focused more about what went into this film from each individual person, and there were some people who's interview I would've liked to see.
Overall it was as good as it could be, nothing more, nothing less.
Inception (2010)
Wow! Emotional, Intruiging, and Left Me Wanting More!
This is another movie that shows the brilliance of Christopher Nolan's movies. This had great acting, some of the best visual effects I've seen, and a compelling story.
The visual effects were very impressive. From rotating hallways to worlds turning in on themselves, to mirror hallways that left me completely confused, the use of practical effects are just on reason this movie is so good.
The storyline was pretty simple. It had a very basic premise, and a relatively easy to follow structure, but it was done really, really well. The emotional background of Cobb and his wife was well thought out and planned, and whether Cobb is a criminal or a villain showed throughout the whole story.
Without spoiling anything, let me just say that the ending topped everything off beautifully, with room for interpretation, which is what I love from movies, especially sci-fi movies.
Overall, this movie delivered on so many levels, and I would recommend it, but not as a light watch. It pays to pay attention while watching, like with most of Christopher Nolan's films.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Amazing and Intriguing, With A Slight Downside
First, to start this whole thing off, I'll say that Oppenheimer is really a great film, fully immersing you in the experience. It has great acting, score, sound design, editing, cinematography, emotion, and it really is satisfying to watch.
It does, however, take some time to warm up to. After watching it the first time, I was only mildly happy with it, but after watching it again and really paying attention to every little detail (of which there are many), it grew on me a lot more.
Cillian Murphy is amazing (definitely worthy of his Oscar), and the cast he is surrounded by also gives it their all.
The sound design is absolutely incredible, helping to immerse you completely in the story, as well as the score, which makes those tense moments so much more intense.
The editing and cinematography top it all off, and it definitely deserves the Oscars it won for those categories.
The length of it was really its only drawback, but, as a person who loves long films, it didn't stand in the way of my enjoyment.
Overall, it's a really great film, bordering on the edge of a masterpiece, a classic. I would reccomend it, but only to people who like this kind of biographical drama, because if you're not ready for it, you definitely won't like it.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
Completely Underrated!!
Brooklyn Nine-Nine is really an amazing, underrated TV show.
It is really well written, the cast is amazing, and all of the jokes land.
Led by Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta, everyone is believable and hilarious, with each unique personality being brought to the screen wonderfully.
The jokes make you laugh every single time, with many references to great movies and books.
This show is great with its consistency, having the jokes and plotlines still make sense later, with very few plot holes. This is not much of a spoiler, but at a certain point Hitchcock gets a tattoo, and you can see that with him the rest of the show.
This show succeeds where many other shows fail.
The only downside of this show (which I didn't dock the rating for because it was so short) was season 8. They made it really political and intense, meaning it was harder to watch for fun and enjoyment. Even so, the jokes are still great, and the show finale is one of the best episodes of the season.
It's really a great TV show, and I don't know why it isn't given all the praise it deserves.
Maestro (2023)
Beautiful Cinematography, Terrible, Dragged Out Plot
Overall, the movie lacked certain things it needed, but it delivered on a few notes.
While every single shot in this is beautiful and cinematic, the shots are three times as long as they need to be, meaning the movie drags on and on and on. There is almost no variety between shots, and a lot of vital conversations between two characters focus on one long shot of one person talking and listening, which a simple cut to the other person could fix.
The story telling is very monotone and diluted, making the whole film feel very repetitive and boring. I know very, very little about Leonard Bernstein's life, but from the movie I could tell it could have been very interesting to see. Unfortunately, the movie really falls flat.
Interstellar (2014)
Amazing! One of the Best Sci-Fi Movies I've Seen!
This is definitely one of the best sci-fi movies I've seen. The cast and acting was amazing, the VFX was out of this world (stupid pun intended), and the score of it tied everything together. Even on my second watch, I was on the edge of my seat, rooting for them as if it was my first time watching it.
This is definitely one of Christopher Nolan's best films, and that's hard to be, considering his massive portfolio of amazing movies ("Memento", "Inception", "Oppenheimer", the Dark Knight Trilogy, to name a few).
My favorite part of this movie has to be the docking scene, the scenes on Miller's and Dr. Mann's planets, and the ending, which brings everything to a close so perfectly, especially the father-daughter relationship between Murphy and Coop.
WARNING: SLIGHT SPOILER BELOW:
People will tell you this movie goes too far in the third act, but I really like that it brings everything in a circle, connecting everything that happened earlier.
