Der Räuber Hotzenplotz (1974)
Perfect adaptation
I grew up watching this movie, so excuse me for being overly enthusiastic, but... It rules! Froebe is the perfect actor for Hotzenplotz, the location is wonderfully medieval and the acting is so over the top, you have to laugh at almost every scene...sure, the FX are trash at best, the sounds could be from some Genesis or Kraut rock album, there are lots of revealing mistakes (Sparkasse building, power lines) and errors, the mask is horrible, there's a toad that looks like a turd...but the overall atmosphere is awesome. The 2006 version? I don't even want to see it! Is there a dubbed version? If so, grab some German beer, sit back and enjoy!!!
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
Horrid.
Where to begin...
I had hopes for this movie, read some positive opinions on it and generally felt like it could be a good movie (Sam Raimi, huh). Note to self: stop trusting ANYONE's opinion.
This is bad. No really, it is. It's a bunch of AWFUL shock scenes (you know the type, calm cuts, quiet orchestral music, pastel colours, then OH F$%K screeching noise that blasts your speakers (it's even worse with headphones), close-up of some CGI Halloween mask and following seizure-cuts) with some generic dialog and product placement strewn in. This is effective, yes. Is it scary? Well, if you think reflexes and startling are the epitome of horror, that's a definite positive. Personally I think it's annoying as hell (dragged me to it! HEH!) and nothing that should be in a horror movie except in a few well-placed doses. Passages of pure terror are great, think of Evil Dead 1 and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Hell, PLANET TERROR creates an atmosphere without this crap - not even going to mention a certain movie from New Zealand. The story reminded me of Thinner a lot, the usual cliché stuff. It's so stupid. A cabin? Seriously? The whole bank thing is so unnatural as well. Also, Justin f&%$ing Long. Bruce Willis BARELY made Die Hard 4 a watchable movie. Oh well. My opinion, believe it or don't: Don't watch this movie.
