Fargo (2014–2024)
10/10
The only show on television that keeps getting BETTER!!
11 February 2024
Fargo is THE most consistently good show on television. Season 5 was just as good as Season 1 and that is a such a rarity these days! The dark humor, the beautiful shots, and the amazingly flushed-out characters all contribute to a season that had me looking forward to every episode. The characters are flawed but lovable, super-dramatic but not cheesy or cliché. The Swede was the funnest, weirdest character I've had the pleasure of watching on any show this whole year. Almost every scene has a real beauty to it, and the plot line was a real joy to behold. Most shows these days seem to dramatically dip in quality after the first season. Fargo, somehow, truly seems to be one of the few series' that just gets better with time and I love it for being able to do so. Whatever formula the show runners use should be applied to every damn program on television.

A BRAVE, surprising combination of science and entertainment.
8 January 2024
I love this series. I know that the main purpose of the show is to be entertaining, but I hugely appreciate the honesty with which they approach problems in the meat industry. Not a lot of programming has the bravery to do so. It has great, relatable participants from a wide range of backgrounds. The people presenting the ideas were interesting but also were cool people who I might be friends with. The truth about our environment and diet can be tough to face, but that made me even more impressed by the way the show smoothly melded it into their competition. I'm a big fan, and will help spread the word. I came for the entertainment and stayed for the education.

Station Eleven (2021–2022)

An apocalypse with a big, fat, kickass heart!
5 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I've watched this series four times. There's just something about it that is deeper than 98% of other television shows. It's got heart, immense creativity, and incredible writing. The characters are so nuanced, emotional, and interesting. Meanwhile, the apocalypse on Earth is so well thought-out and lovingly crafted. It's clear to me that the people who put this show together really cared about it. There is a reunion near the end that made me cry for the first time in over 10 years. Though there are a few confusing turns, I would have gladly watched 10 more seasons of this show. RIP, Station Eleven!!

Funny, insightful, and interesting documentary
15 November 2023
I really liked the way the filmmaker approached the making of this documentary. She was obviously a liberal but she didn't make the whole thing about partisanship. It really seemed as though both interviewer and interviewee made an honest attempt to be cordial and friendly with one another. I wish the rest of the country would use this as an example of how people of different political ideologies should get along.. The subjects were very colorful and very interesting. They really surprised me in many ways. The interviews were informal but fairly in-depth and honest as well. . Overall this program was insightful, informative, engaging, and actually pretty funny!

The Idol (2023)
1/10
No substance, not much to care about.
27 June 2023
I really tried to love The Idol (being a fan of Euphoria), but ended up bored and frustrated after every episode. Everything about the series feels vapid and uninspired. Unfortunately, the weakest part of the entourage was The Weeknd. As an actor, he is just not ready for a lead role on a major network. It felt like watching an 8th grader stumble his way through a school play. I loved the characters from Euphoria, so my biggest disappointment was realizing by Episode 4, I was not vested in a single one of them. I have NO problem with onscreen nudity, but after the 3rd (4th?) time watching Lily Rose-Depp masturbate, I started wondering if sex was all this show has to offer. In the end I had to admit that this was the worst series I've ever wanted to love.

Carnival Row (2019–2023)

Season 2 is incredible
20 February 2023
It feels like I've been waiting for a decade for this show to come back. It only took minutes into season 2 for me to be fully re-immersed in Carnival Row's weird world again. The massive sets are as good as I've ever seen, and the same goes for the CGI. Even minor touches like the gorgeous wings on the pixies seem to be improved. After hearing about the problems behind this season's production, I tempered my expectations and prepared for trouble. But thank God, the world of Carnival Row is still blissfully the same. All of our favorite characters are back, and it seems like they might have brought along some new critch for the season. (Goblins? Orcs? Maybe a troll or two?) Who knows, its too early to tell, but whatever these new creatures are, I can't WAIT to meet 'em! I love Carnival Row's political overtones, it's spotlight on human intolerance, and the incredible depth / variety of the characters. I love the boundless imagination behind the show's lore, the monumental effort put into world-building, and I love the way I can be completely immersed in another universe for an hour every week.

Crashing (2016)
5/10
I was hoping for a bit more subtlety and / or depth
13 February 2023
Yeesh.... I noped out just after the awful "fantastic marvelous day dance", which was done without irony in the episode after the episode that was centered around a poop-joke. I was a huge fan of Fleabag, but this show is a lot more obvious, far more dumbed-down, and just less intelligent in general. Besides the two lead roles, i dint find many of the characters very likeable, and most of their personalities felt morelike one-note bludgeons than fully fleshed-out humans.

Crashing definitely did get a few laughs out of me, and did enjoy the irreverence and the light-hearted vibe. I just wish there was a bit more depth to the show, as well as a bit more subtlety.

So well-done that you forget there are cameramen.
6 February 2023
Incredible documentary. Extremely interesting slice of life from a very different culture. The filmmakers were incredibly good at staying out of the way of the film, and portraying the gritty culture of the location. I didn't expect such realistic, brutally honest interactions, and I absolutely wish more docs were like this one!

The 2 Finnish women at the center of the film were resilient, sweet, and remarkably strong. Most of the bar patrons, on the other hand, were pretty damn awful. I wouldn't think most people from areas such as these are like this. But the when a bar owner is a horrible as this guy was, the atmosphere of that establishment tends to follow suit. At times this documentary is heart-wrenching, and at others it is truly frightening.

Looks amazing, sounds even better...
9 November 2022
Within the first 15 minutes, this film had played my 3 favorite songs in the world. Wendell and Wild is a beautiful, punk-rock piece of art that I will probably watch ten times. It's super-creative, poignant, political, and full of heart. The artwork is unstoppable, with a Nightmare Before Christmas-vibe Ive been longing to see onscreen for years. But the best part of the movie is the Soundtrack, a non-stop onslaught of mostly black musicians playing off-center classics that the film industry usually sleeps on. It was such a great surprise to hear bands like Fishbone, The Specials, and TV on the Radio in a major film release.

RRR (2022)

The cheese was overwhelming...
28 June 2022
I don't understand how so many people could get past the cheese in this film so easily. I haven't seen this level of sentimentality since the 1980's!!! There was absolutely a lot to love about RRR, such as the amazing action sequences, and the spot-on visual effects. At times it felt like this film was even groundbreaking!! But then the cheesiness would return with a vengeance... thru a 2 minute close-up of someone crying, or an overproduced song that would make even Barry Manilow blush.

Bland...
26 June 2022
I just couldn't find anyone to root for in "Snowflake Mountain". The participants were mostly awful, and the hosts were bland and disingenuous. I enjoy a really good reality show, and I like seeing spoiled kids get their comeuppance. What I don't love is watching kids mug for the camera, while hosts read off the same lines I've heard hosts read for the past 20 years.

The Great (2020–2023)

Seriously, this is my favourite series this year...
21 November 2021
Who the hell cares if this show is not historically correct? This isn't the History Channel, this is a comedy. I've seen far too many period pieces take themselves far too seriously. It's a genre well-trodden, but hardly ever done with wit like this.

If you can't see that this is the funniest show on television, your sense of humor must be broken.
