Stalker Guilt Syndrome (2002)
Extremely funny short
It's a great short film which is primarily voice over. It is about a man accidently following a woman, as in they just happened to be going the same way. It reminded me of Christopher Nolan's "Following," except accidental and with an entirely different tone, mood, and this was funny. Got a lot of laughs. Hilarious. Check it out if you can.
The One (2001)
The One Adds Up To None
`The One' is just another film that puts the Sci-Fi genre to shame. The basic plot is Jet Li is this guy who wants to destroy the other Jet Lis that exist in parallel universes in order to become, The One.' However, he's got a little problem, there's a whole agency to police travel between these universes, i.e. just take the fundamentals from `Time Cop' and make it about universes, not time.
A lot of people called this to a B' movie, and in all seriousness it is. It is a B' movie with some very nice computer work. The plot has been shot through with so many holes (much like the entire supporting cast), that its just irritating. So, if you kill the other 120-some-odd yous, you'd become The One. Basically, if another you dies anywhere in the `multiverse,' you get their wisdom, strength, speed, etc.
One huge hole they never bother to cover is the fact in the theory that this movie is based on, if you outlive all the other yous and live say, to 100 or something
You'd technically become The One, and be the fastest and strongest person to ever exist. I don't know about you, but I'd personally love to see senior citizens kick some whippersnapper keester Jet Li-style. But, come on... It's just not going to happen. The action was pretty decent, though, I got to admit. I just require more than action. The One, as it deserves - one star out of four.
This is nonsensical Sci-Fi gibberish. If you want to see a good Sci-Fi film see: The Road Warrior, Six-String Samurai, or The Empire Strikes Back.
The Man Who Wasn't There (2001)
I Like Barber Movies
I have enjoyed all the previous Coen Brothers films in a very good light. I enjoyed this one in a dark light. I do not think that you can conceivably compare their previous work to this picture. Not even, `Fargo.' In many ways this film is the opposite of `O Brother Where Art Thou?' When I left the theater after seeing O Brother, I was upbeat and that movie just made you feel good. This will likely do the opposite. However, don't rule this film out because you think it might lack humor. It doesn't lack humor; it's just not your everyday kind.
All in all this film made 1949 seem much more depressing than the Great Depression that was rampant during O Brother. Billy Bob Thornton shines through as Ed Crane, the Barber. By the end of the film, it felt like I was within Crane. The depth of the character is extraordinary. I felt sorry by the end, and walked out into the cold street pondering for a long while after the feature had ended. If I had to give this come kind of rating, it would probably be three out of four stars. It was a very good for a dark, deep film. The Coens offered us something distinctly different from their average menu.
