Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
Great follow up and Set Up, but lesser as a standalone
Overall great movie, almost equal to the first. The human-only scenes aren't nearly as compelling as the ape scenes and this movie has slightly more of them, leaving only 4 apes to actually receive characters. I'm surprised they needed Judy Greer to play Cornelia who doesn't really do anything or speak. The previous movie is slightly better in focusing on the apes away from the humans while still making the human moments feel necessary to the story. This is the awkward middle stage movie where they had to get the actual promise of an ape society off the ground while also tying up the loose ends left by the first movie. Works great as a part 2, but if I hadn't seen them back to back, I probably would have liked this less than I do.
Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu (2021)
Enjoyable anime that's hard to recommend
There is some really cool stuff here and even some of the problematic character interactions are interesting and funny in their own way, like how everyone just eventually accepts Paul is a himbo. But there are some really, really bad anime tropes in this series that make it hard to recommend to anyone I know. The show tackles the obvious issue with a grown man in a child's body and makes you watch at excruciating length sometimes. Definitely could have been done in a way that didn't make my skin crawl. This anime is 90% incredible and 10% horrifying to watch as an emotionally developed person in their 30s.
Person of Interest: 2 Pi R (2013)
But... he's still in danger...
There was some compelling stuff in this episode like the kid secretly running a drug ring but some things rubbed me the wrong way. Like the school getting mad at a substitute teacher for teaching math. Honestly the whole school kind of seemed like a caricature of what american schools are expected to be. Also, Caleb's mom is an addict and he just assumes she'll be fine taking care of herself with unlimited money for drugs after he's gone? That solution wasn't thought through. Oh, and the fact that the drug dealers are still out looking for Caleb. That was never resolved. Like, minutes after the episode ends, Caleb is going to die anyway. This episode had a couple misdirects too many and would have been better if they stuck with the original revenge explanation.
