The Mentalist (2008)
Psyche Rip Off Definitely.
If imitation is the best form of flattery, then Psyche should should be very flattered today. There are small (very small) differences made to keep the producers from getting sued but the idea is a rip off and the execution is poor. The premise of a guy with a good memory for detail? Fine so he's an ex-cop (isn't there one in Psyche too?) and the guy on Psytche isn't. Also this guy shows a prejudice streak about people that can only be found in the real world at the Republican National Convention. That's about all the most original part of the whole show. The casting of Simon Baker shows only an airhead looking actor can play this part. The smirk he wears the whole time is directed at the audience for believing this is a new original idea. Instead of watching this trash, rent the first season of Psyche on DVD or read a good book. And don't let Simon Baker know the name of the book or he'll find an overblown stereotype that you'll fit in.
Reservation Road (2007)
Not an original idea in the movie
This movie has a great cast but not an original idea can be found. I found myself remembering every revenge movie from the last twenty years. The premise is an upper class New England family instantly confronted with overwhelming tragedy. Movies such as Into the Bedroom, 21 Grams, Ordinary People, and every Steven Seagal movie came to mind. This movie rips them all off. In spite of the lack of originality the supporting performances by Mark Ruffalo and Mira Sirvino were Oscar caliber. Jennifer Connelly did her usual whining performance and Joaquim Phoenix was comical in his role as a tormented father. This was a last Fall buzz movie for Oscar consideration. You'd be more intrigued spending the 100 minutes watching CSI reruns.
Silver City (2004)
Good idea. Mediocre execution.
'Silver City' is a good idea. It features a politician who isn't too smart who is controlled by special interest. Sound familiar? The problem is that they spend too much time trying to act like a documentary and not enough time on the players. Danny Houston, Maria Bello and Chris Cooper give credible performances but can't compete with the "message". John Sayles is usually a fabulous director (see Lone Star, Eight Men Out and Passion Fish) but like in his movie, City of Hope, he spends the majority of the movie preaching. Among the other pluses for this movie is the beautiful cinematography. It is a movie to watch but if your like me, you'll be saying "All right already" to the screen.
Gefangen (2004)
Soft core Gay Porn at it's worst!
C'mon, this film is ridiculous. Lots of full frontal nudity but very light on the plot. I guess they hope you don't notice that the actors can't act (lots of long pause, think bad porn), that the plot is non-existent and the ending doesn't make sense. Cazzo Productions is the producer of hard core gay porn for All Worlds Video in the U.S. They've been making porn for so long that the idea of a straight boy in prison falling head over heels in love with the first guy he meets makes sense. And the language thing (jumping from English to German and back in the same conversation) shows very bad direction and made things even less believable. Skip this film. Rent regular gay porn where you know you get bad acting but real sex. Catch up on your reading or sleeping. Watch Oz. But whatever you do, don't watch this piece of trash.
Young Adam (2003)
I want my money back!
This movie was really bad. It was painfully slow. The whole thing seem to be begging to get over. There were three sub plots and none of them were complete or viable as a story. The dialouge was so bad that I kept looking forward to the next sex scene because they wouldn't say anything. The sex scenes were hilarious to say the least. They tried to portray a hunger between the main characters but it made me laugh. I felt i was watching an episode of 'Wild Kingdom's Most Hilarious Moments'.
And the sex scene with the custard and ketchup! Who thought that was art. It was a porno fetish film. I expected much better from Ewan MacGregor and Tilda Swinton and felt ripped off.
