Deep Impact (1998)
A comparison of Deep Impact and Armageddon
both movies are typical Hollywood creations, full of patriotic cr*p and pompous music, which was always indicating that you're being stuffed with some religious, patriotic or moral propaganda at the moment. Morgan Freeman was really horrible as the President of US. The constant linking to the bible (messiah, the ark, Speeches of the Prez) made me really angry. Bible ain't the most important book in the world, get over it America.
Where were all the riots? In a situation like this there'll be a lot of rioting and looting going on - just look what happened in New Orleans. Where was that in a movie? I wanna see the real human nature!
(minor spoilers) This movie was decent only in a couple of scenes - e.g. where this one guy is left in the outer space + the destruction of New YOrk was kinda good looking + the view of the flying comet. All the rest was one big cliché. If you wanna see some good apocalyptic film go rent "Doomsday", or some good Zombie flick.
Frontière(s) (2007)
A good mixture of several horror flicks
*Spoilers* It'S funny how a mixture of something you've already seen in minimum 15 other movies is still capable of being entertaining. This flick was a mixture of "House of 1000 corpses" (with one woman looking exactly as Mama Firefly, the motel owner bringing the escaped girl back to the mines (compare to Captain Spaulding bringing back the escaped girl in the end of Ho1000C), the old nazi as the head of the family (compare to Dr. Satan)), "The hills have eyes" (a strange deformed girl who starts to help the victims), "Texas chainsaw massacre" (the whole cannibalistic stuff) and of course Hostel, the part in the mines reminded me a bit of "Descend". These were the most obvious parts inspired by other great horror flicks, but nevertheless this movie was still very entertaining, with pretty much good acting and interesting political background. I gave it 7 out of 10 because it was just an eclectic mixture of other flicks with almost no innovation, but it was a damn decent mixture.
Nightcast (2007)
C-Movie
As i'm not a C-Movie fan, I thought this flick was pathetic. Maybe it would be more fun if i was drunk or stoned, but i just wasn't in the right mood for wasting my time.
Theoretically this film could be great to watch with friends and laugh at the brutal acting and ridiculous effects and story. It was a German version of Toxic Avenger but even more cheap and stupid, something like House of the Dead 3.
Sometimes I was frightened by a thought what could happen to the world if Uwe Boll suddenly dies of an abrupt pangs of remorse for what he has done to the art of movie-making. But now I have no fear. Because there are apparently enough people who are ready to sadistically eye-rape you with their satanic creations.
Alpha Dog (2006)
If it was my dog i'd shoot it
Watching a drunk Innuit lying in snow for two hours would be more fascinating than this piece of junk.
If you are going to watch this you should be prepared for: 1)a bunch of total idiots who think they are "gangstas"; 2) absolutely no action for hours; 3) the major part of the film being a footage of the wannabe "gangstas" throwing their wannabe parties and trying hard to be "cool". Two guys from "The girl next door" try to look deadly and dangerous but it looks like Bilbo Baggins trying to be Terminator.
I don't know if negative IQ actually exists, but if someone had it, he'd probably use a language like the guys in "Alpha Dog". The rare words which are not swear-words, are mostly "wassup","ok" or "cool". It's amazing how someone can actually express anything with such a tiny vocabulary.
According to the movie the most girls in America can't speak. They only exist to be slapped on their butts by the wannabe "gangstas".
There were also numerous things that made absolutely no sense: - a Jew with a swastika/SS tattoo, - a kidnappee with a black belt in karate who didn't even try to protect himself and didn't suspect anything when he was taken for a walk in the mountains at night by a grim guy who was carrying a shovel, - the elder brother of the kidnappee mysteriously disappears in the middle of the storyline, even though he's the only person who's worth watching.
I really don't understand, how someone can like Alpha Dog. The people who gave this junk 10 stars are probably either under 13 or have never seen any motion picture before. Guys it'll probably surprise you, but MTV isn't the only TV-channel and presence of a pop-star doesn't make a movie good.
Unter dem Eis (2005)
Bad, pathetic, ridiculous
***Spoilers*** ( (even though this junk can be hardly spoiled)
"Mother"'s acting was unbearable - her smile always had a touch of severe suffering even before anything happened. Her actions in the film were also absolutely incomprehensible. She doesn't tell her husband anything, when their 7 y.o. son accidentally kills a neighbor girl (even though her husband is an investigator in this case and could easily fix everything up if he knew what had happened). "Father" is a total idiot, and you can see it clearly at the end of the film, as he actually wants to bring his son and wife to the police, when he finds out about everything... Maybe it was a propaganda for a perfect-clerk who carries out his duty, even if he has to sacrifice his own family for it. I don't know. An average father would normally try to protect his family, regardless of what happens. In Germany it's obviously exactly the other way round.
I honestly even don't know why i'm writing about this horrible piece of trash. It was a totally boring movie, with some pseudo-ethical dilemmas. God, even if it was the last movie left on the planet I would burn it without a regret. Avoid at any cost!
Screamers (1995)
A Gem
Contemporary releases in sci-fi/horror genre prove that rich Hollywood filmmakers are running out of ideas. This film is really an excellent example of how you can do a great job with almost no money.
The greatest thing in Screamers is that there is a message in it. It's just a way the real art should be - it should make people think, dream, use their imagination and not only consume the finished and totally digested pieces of information. And I think not many expensive Hollywood productions (especially sci-fi) are successful in this regard.
So, for instance, the idea that someone who looks human, can be a rusted dead machine inside and you can never say who's who judging from their appearance. Or the forsaken soldiers who sacrifice their lives in a pointless war, which was forgotten by the governments who started it. Blood is cheaper than raw materials - this is also reflecting the main principles of our life today.
In my opinion you mustn't have one million explosions or world-famous stars in a movie to make it good. It's just a good story, an appropriate atmosphere and some really well done acting to make it good. And in my opinion Screamers has all these elements.
