Heist 88 (2023)
Not professional
An interesting story on this movie could not save it from the bad writing and flat acting. It feels like a film school project. Over emoting and corny dialog are a lot to try to escape.
The movie claims to be based on actual events. I was not familiar with the story, before watching the movie. The idea that a heist could be pulled of in such a manner is what made the film have any interest whatsoever. Because the events took place in the 1980's when banks were making the switch from humans and paper over to computers and bits it is hard to imagine that more people didn't try something similar. Sadly, the production value of this movie are nowhere near the money the robbers stole.
The Out-Laws (2023)
Exactly What You Should Expect
I read so many reviews that panned this movie. Folks, get a grip. Check the credits. It's produced by Adam Sandler and it stars Adam Devine. It was 100% on point for that. Will it win an Oscar? Heavens no, but really, only one movie a year in each category does anyhow, so who cares.
This movie churns out the corny comedy that I turned it on for. It was predictable. It was corny. It was silly. And I LOVED IT!! You Don't need to put down your iPad or push pause to go grab a snack, it just does what it is supposed to do. I love high-brow art-house movies, but I also like a simple "grab some popcorn" flick to watch with my wife. Just like the money at the end of the heist, this movie delivers!
Candy (2022)
Not as Sweet as Love & Death
I just spent the weekend watching "Love & Death" on Max and the "Candy" on Hulu. Both were telling the same story of an ax murder in Texas in 1980.
Candy was well told, but felt a bit stiff and rushed. We didn't get to look into the lives of the major players in the story. I also didn't like the time jumps, backward and forward, that were used to create "intrigue". It wasn't really effective and felt a bit like the director/editor trying to keep us interested in the story so that they could keep us watching. The story itself has plenty of intrigue, so this technique just felt forced.
One of the other places that I think they dropped the ball in this production was in the courtroom. It, too, felt forced.
I thought it was interesting to see the small tidbits of the actual events that both shows incorporated. A few big facts were shown differently (such as the relationship and skin color of Candy's friend and pastor.)
If you do watch both limited series, I would recommend watching "Candy", the following it up with "Love & Death".
The Terminal List (2022)
Should Have Quit While it was Ahead
******SPOILERS*******
Remember how First Blood was a pretty good movie then each iteration of the Rambo character got progressively worse? The same happens with this show. With each successive episode I kept thinking "why am I watching?" The main character is caught in a series of mishaps that are all too improbable to be true. While the basic premise is ok, it just gets to the point of ridiculous by the end. A man with a career in the Navy SEALS is able to fund an unbelievable amount of matériels in order to exact revenge on the people who killed his wife and daughter. This would have been better as a two hour mindless action romp, but it stretches out over 8 episodes. It has little to no suspense as we know that in the end Chris Pratt will find and kill everyone on his list. Like the villains of the show, it started with promise, then lied to us all.
