Mein neuer Freund (2005– )
Just great!
20 June 2007
"I didn't have a particularly nice childhood, but I did have beans!" says Christian Ulmen performing his role Knut, as the contestant refuses to eat his homemade beans. Being tired of arguing she eventually relents. And that, basically, is what the show is about. Be tolerant however stupid your supposedly friend Knut is. Obviously Knut and the other characters are little individuals to say the least. One might as well say they are rather annoying. The contestants, of whose not everyone hangs on to win the tantalizing 10.000 euros, would agree to that anyway. Christian Ulmen playing it simple plain brilliantly (give credit to the effort he put into this show) embodies a pothead, a queer, a schizopfrenic to give you some examples. Of course, one might like one episode better than the other, but still, all of them are hilarious (my favourite being Alexander von Eich, a snobby noble). So while you may be sick of German comedies, you still should give Mein Neuer Freund and go. You will definitely enjoy it.

How To Become A Bouncer
8 June 2007
If you want to become a bouncer you are inevitably a bad guy to face unpopularity? Not necessarily. If you follow Sway's golden bouncer rules. Be nice and only fight outside the club unless it is a really serious situation. A serious situation is defined by the lord of bouncers himself.

Basically, that is what Road House is about. An average action film full of flaws and a manifest ending not to be taken too seriously. Yet, if you don't watch Road House expecting too much you can still enjoy it.

The very simple story is about a legendary and genuine bouncer called Dalton that tries to teach a chaotic and corrupt village, controlled by the appalling but prosperous Brad Wesley, how to behave. However, he faces big opposition and thus a lot of not so friendly bouncers wanting to foil his plans. While he only attempts to make the village a better place the pressure consistently increases until it even becomes far too personal for Dalton...

Of course, there are also loads of sexy woman involved as well as roadsters and the big evil guy Dalton eventually has to fight.

Though the action is decent the story lacks of pace and a red thread. Trying to combine a fairly annoying romance with the actual plot the directors fail miserably. That is arguably because Dalton is supposed to be the perfect guy proving that honest doormen do exist. Accordingly, the action never picks up the speed needed to make this film a classic.

Still, as mentioned above, Road House serves its purpose: Entertainment. Enjoy it if you can ;)!

Voll normaaal (1994)
C'mon this is funny!
26 May 2007
Before watching "Voll normaaal" you must consider this is not supposed to be an intelligent film. Neither story nor dialogues make any sense to say the least, but this makes it so hilarious! It's like techno music. Itmay be cheesy. It may be goofy. Sensitive people may try to avoid it unconditionally. But if you like to spend a night to switch off your brain (I recommend drinking alcohol before seeing it)and just enjoy yourself it is definitely worth watching respectively listening ;). The story is by the way about an antisocial family having to deal with their messed up life in the Ghetto of Cologne. Great Stuff!!!!!!!!!

Apocalypto (2006)

Amazing Aztec Action!
15 May 2007
15th century, Mesoamerican jungle: Jaguar Paw and his tribe are unexpectedly attacked by the superior Aztecs. Having been taken prisoner they are taken to a new and astonishingly violent even barbarous world. However, Jaguar manages, before being also caught, to safe his pregnant wife and son in a deep hollow. Knowing that his family relies on him he has to face a race against time and other undesired encounters... Apocalypto and Mel Gibson have been heavily criticised since the film has been released. Maya-experts found mistakes reinforcing false clichés of the habits and customs of the ancient Mayas and Aztecs. For instance, the language that is spoken throughout the film is supposedly not quite the right. On the other hand, Mel Gibson evoked great furore remarking anti-Semitic comments that even led to boycotts in the USA. Though Mel Gibson's attitudes may be controversial he is definitely a gifted director who knows how to make a film. The atmosphere he creates seems so real through the use of the above mentioned ancient language and the extraordinary actors, only to give you a few examples. It makes you believe you are in the jungle from the very beginning. If you consider these points and don't mind watching exaggerate violence (and justifiably so for 18 year-olds and over) and the length of the film, you will enjoy this epic spectacular.

RTL production.... dull , ridiculous and full of flaws as always
23 March 2007
To be honest, before watching "Haialarm auf Mallorca"- "World Premier on RTL", I really had no expectations whatsoever. Now I have to say: this film is even a disgrace for the cheesiest German channel RTL (apart from RTL 2 and Super RTL). As you may have supposed the film is about a deadly dangerous super killer shark murdering people in Mallorca for no reasons. But there is hope for the terrified people of Mallorca. The great hero Ralf Moeller fights against the injustice, bravely challenging the epic monster, which isn't even identifiable nearly throughout the film. Having experienced a shark attack himself, in fact, years ago when his wife got raped, he has the opportunity to revenge now. However he has to bother with greedy scientists and corrupt police... Will justice win and the people of Mallorca have their own peaceful life back? You are going to have to see if you bother watching this masterpiece. T his horribly animated film would have been a great contender for the worst film of the year if it hadn't been German. The story is obviously rubbish and the acting wooden. Even the shark is not scary.

As a German you have to hope this movie doesn't reach a wider audience than Germany. But I'm sure it wont as there are heaps of real good films, obviously not produced by RTL. To be fair with the entire film crew, you will at least have a funny evening with a sufficient amount of alcohol and a nice company. I'm, hence, going to give this rubbish a 2.
