Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
A near perfect sequel to the original masterpiece
I'm a huge fan of the original. I'm also a huge fan of Dystopia NF-SciFi. So when a sequel was announced I was both excited but also worried that Hollywood would once again botch a great movie (Yeah I'm looking at you, Star Wars Force Awakens). I have to say Blade Runner 2049 was almost everything I hoped it would be.
Bleak, dystopian future. High and low technology intertwined. Soundtrack that pays homage to the original. Wonderful scene-scapes. The storyline was great - thought provoking but not the least bit convoluted. The story also seamlessly continues from the original, even though it could be a stand alone.
Yes there were some 'slow' parts in this movie; but these were perfectly fine and IMO added to the overall atmosphere. I really enjoyed soaking up the atmosphere of the movie, it was a visual treat.
I do agree with other reviewers that a few scenes could have been cut without harming the movie, but they weren't completely pointless.
My only disappointment was I feel there was a missed opportunity for the iconic line "Time to die", but whatever.
Overall I loved this movie, well written and directed. A real treat for dystopia sci-fi and Blade Runner fans.
Harlots (2017)
Delicious Baroque period drama
This show deserves so much praise. It's brilliant. I initially thought it would be a cheap and bawdy show capitalizing on sexuality with weak storytelling. How wrong I was ! Each episode is tight with suspense and intrigue, and I was hooked almost immediately. Despite the subject matter, (two competing brothels), the sex scenes were not even slightly gratuitous. It was all very classy ! The Baroque period London and Rococco fashion is spot on and a real treat for viewers. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into production value, it's very visual and there's a lot of attention to detail. There is a lot of juxtaposition between the high class aristocracy and lower classes which really makes for great viewing. I can't fault the acting and the quality of dialogue is top notch - suitable for the setting; but without pretentiousness. My friend who recommended this show told me: "Do yourself a favor and watch this show!". I echo those sentiments and can't wait for season two.
Deathline (1997)
An excellent near-future sci-fi for genuine fans of this genre.
This movie is actually quite good - but only for fans of near future sci-fi and non mainstream movies. If you were expecting Hollywood action then you're better off renting one of the millions of action clones at your local DVD store. For a start, the overall near future atmosphere is excellent - grubby, seedy, and not quite the utopian fantasy enjoyed by Hollywood. The old world Eastern-bloc architecture makes perfect cinematography and is a world of contrasts. This movie pays a lot of attention to detail - the fashion and scene locations in particular. The cyber-punk aspects are pleasantly NOT overdone. The plot isn't hard to follow (I don't know what the critics are whining about, perhaps they should stick with day time TV plots) even if it is a standard revenge type thing. My only quibble would be some of the gun fights - a little spaghetti western for my taste and a tad unrealistic. I thought the acting was excellent throughout and the characters portrayed well - especially the gangsters. The women are particularly sultry and beautiful. Not sure what the nudity fuss is about, not that big a deal and I thought tastefully done. The underground party scenes are very cool and I also rate the entire musical score highly - soundtrack would be excellent.
