Dune: Part Two (2024)
Cool sci-fi drama
If you look for something to give you a break from (only God knows) how many rerun's of watching Star Wars trilogy, this movie can give you a rest. It's laser beams, intergalactic warfare and complicated dynastic relationships and scheming will easily fit into your weekend's movie night. Turn the sound on full volume, give it a big screen and enjoy! Only lightsabers are missing but oh well, you get saber fights anyway :)
This is well written drama, I enjoyed it and it fulfilled it's purpose. The interesting aspect of this movie and the series theme was how it takes inspiration from islam. The movie relies heavily on religious aspects as basically the whole movie is about the coming of messiah and salvation. At the same time, it doesn't fit at all to the movie and still somehow it makes the whole movie.
I saw this in movie theater which gave it extra points. I do not consider this movie worth of second watch. Good action anyways and I did not got bored.
Ai no mukidashi (2008)
Something different
An epic love story between two young souls. A good reminder how Christianity has shaped the world in a way which make many people narrow-minded. Casting sin on children and youngsters make them just miserable instead of the possibility to enjoy the life fully and gospel. Yes, Jesus died for our sins so what is the purpose of being shameful and guilty about your actions? Life your life happily and enjoy every moment, that is the true gospel.
This movie is long compared to basic movies but I did not find it any boring. It gives a good perspective about love which will remain whether it is Christian or not.
Melancholie der Engel (2009)
Confusing and twisted
Extraordinary movie which makes you think why it exists. Because there is certainly something in Marian Doras mind which is not easy for the mainstream to grasp. I'm sure there is something deeper meaning in this movie which I was not able acknowledge and I might need to watch it again to get better picture of this piece of art and the mindset of it's creator.
There was a couple of beautiful moments in the movie even thought they might seem very twisted and disturbing for majority of people. Basically this movie is what the title promises which makes it a quite succesful on it's purpose.
In the end this movie was quite boring and long. It points out the sickness in our society quite accurately and after all this whole movie was something I've never seen before on the screen which makes it unique.
Midsommar (2019)
Good daylight "horror"
This was a beautiful story. Although the length of the film is quite long I enjoyed almost every second of it. For me, the length of the film is acceptable as Ari Aster has created a unique storyline about extraordinary "fairytale" world. It takes time to build up this kind of atmosphere and show the audience all the nuances of this community and their mid-summer festival culture and traditions. It cannot be rushed to get the viewer inside into this world.
Midsommar-film is a perfect example of how our modern world is totally withdrawn from the Nature. The main characters with their smart phones and laptops look like totally mindless and heartless aliens in completely wrong place from my perspective. Even though that was the purpose of the film, the way how we as humans, rely on Google and internet is mind boggling. If there was any horror in this movie, it was this fact how modern western people lack the spiritual side of life. Some mind altering substances were consumed during this film by the main protagonists but it did not seem to open their hearts to new perspectives. It's just strange how paganism is demonized in our modern world and for example the way how in this movie the Swedish community sees life as a never ending cycle.
During the film the main character Dani (Florence Pugh) was really having a hard time in her life. Her acting was great, and her performance (and looks) was something that kept me interested throughout the film besides the interesting milieu and village traditions.
Great movie if you are looking for something different than basic predictable dark horror movies.
