Off Centre (2001)
Funny, but Nothing Special
This show is pretty funny. It's stupid and it makes you laugh. What more can you expect from the guys that created American Pie 1 & 2. However, I have to say that Mike's girlfriend, Liz, is completely unnecessary. In my opinion this show would be much better off it centered around the lives of the four single guys. Liz just proves to be boring. I would give the show a 2 out of 4.
The One (2001)
Jet Li Kicking Jet Li's Butt
That is pretty much what this movie boils down to. And I love it for that reason alone. This film has little, if any, storyline to speak of. The acting is mediocre, except for the amazing Delroy Lindo. Yet somehow this movie manages to kick some major booty, metaphorically and literally. The SFX sometimes inhibits the showcasing of Li's talents, but overall this film is just a cool way to waste an hour and a half. *** out of ****.
Smallville (2001)
Great Retelling of A Famous Tale
I recently saw Smallville and I loved it. However, I do think that Clark was cast a little too old, but after all this is The WB. The guy is gorgeous, but he definitely cannot pass for 16. I enjoyed the fact that him and Lex appear to be embarking on this very strange friendship. I also like the fact that Lex isn't completely evil, but you can definitely tell that he isn't a saint either. The acting was good and I enjoyed the multi-cultural cast. By the way, the young woman that plays Lana Lang is of Asian and Irish heritage not American Indian. I like her. I think that she is very pretty, but not an outrageously gorgeous supermodel type. She looks like the average high school prom queen. Overall the show is a good addition to the WB. My only problem now is deciding whether to tape Smallville or Roswell.
Hard Ball (2001)
Don't Be Fooled. *Slight Spoiler*
I actually enjoyed "Hardball." Keanu Reeves actually proves to be "okay" in this film. The kids on the team are, of course, adorable. Most have never acted, but somehow that is exactly what makes the film work. Brian Robbins proves to be a capable director. However, don't walk into the theater thinking that Hardball is a cute "kid-friendly" film. It isn't. The language is definitely not meant for anyone under 8. There are also parts in the film that prove to be pretty heartbreaking. The film is a good way to spend a couple of hours if you have nothing better to do. You will walk out and not feel like you just wasted 6 bucks. It's not exactly realistic, but that's part of why I liked it. It's a nice escape from the reality that is going on around us.
