Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005)
entertainment with a different favor
I have seen all the Madea plays and recently saw this movie. I am surprised at the wide swing of sheer emotion or lack of tolerance expressed in the reviews of this movie. The Madea character was over the top and was clearly for comedy relief, but she brought up some very good issues. Some people have a big issue with seeing a man dressed as a woman. This reminded me of Martin Lawrence doing "Big Momma" or Robin Williams as "Mrs. Doubtfire.", what's the big deal don't let that distract from the movie, just go with it. I think people are too critical of other races or the way others live. This movie was clearly written and designed to show things from an Africian-American perspective which is o'k; he is Black. If you don't get everything or agree with everything that is going on that's o'k. As far as the sex and drug references did you see "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" or "American Pie?" I think they had more. What are they rated on this site. They aren't classics or heavy dramas, so why so hard on this movie? Some movies are just entertaining and a bit silly. Movies generally try to make a point or 2 with the exception being slasher movies and I don't see people getting so worked up over them. I think Mr. Perry was trying to give some insight to being Black, and life in both the rich and poor Black community but in a lighthearted way. I think Mr. Perry was trying to say that God is very important to most people, especially Blacks and he feels that if we try to do everything without putting God first; we will fail. I think he was trying to show that life has ups and downs for all people. He may have exaggerated and stereotyped some things that go on in the Black community and he may have over simplified the solutions to some serious problems like divorce, drugs, and violence, but it's a movie. Lighten up a little people.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
where's the meat
Tobey is too thin. We saw in the first SM Tobey as PP thin but transforms as Spiderman into a nicely buff young man. Its gone in this movie. Has Tobey been sick? I think this one uses too much computer generation. I know, I know that its scifi, but I think they tried to carry the whole movie with CG. Also I think they tried too hard to show the contrast between PP and his alter-ego as SM. More to the point that SM is strong and has a purpose and PP is a goof. Its a wonder that PP survived long enough to become spiderman on that fateful day. With as little self-esteem as PP has NOW when he knows he is SM the poor guy couldn't have made it long as PP only. I know some of you will say he (PP) is just acting to preserve his PP persona, but is he or did the writers just over do it. Overall I was a little disappointed in this sequel, but not to the point that I won't see SM 3 when it comes out.
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
NEMESIS a.k.a. the wrath of khan 2 ?
I grew up watching Star Trek with Kirk and Spock etc. on TV in the 60's and followed them to the Big screen and I watched as their characters developed in their movies, then reluctantly I had to accept Picard and his crew, but after some time I did and enjoyed First Contact alot. Some the Star Trek movies were hard to take with weak plots, etc., but at least until now they were original. They say for every rule there is an exception, well Nemesis is it. Nemesis has both a weak plot with a predictable story line and poor flow, but it also rips off it main plot from another Trek movie namely the Wrath of Khan and sub plots from the other Trek movies as well. This was one of the poorest excuses for a Trek movie I have seen since the Final Frontier. The characters didn't seem to have any natural interaction or bond with one another and age hasn't been kind to the actors either. Maybe it's time for the their mission to "boldly go where no one has gone before" to end and they need to pass the torch to another crew, but alas their isn't one for the Enterprise and Voyager doesn't count. Sorry, if I sound so down on this movie, but its Xmas time and I wanted some holiday cheer HO-HO-HO. "Live long and Prosper" Trek fans. Remember it only a movie.
