Men in Black II (2002)
dropped only by my soaring expectations
I gave this movie a "7" when I voted on this site. I usually hate the idea of any type of sequel made. I heard there was a second one coming out and thought "why do you have to drag the first movie through the mud by making a crappy sequel?" Sometimes they can be so bad that you can't watch the original anymore because at the end, all you can think about is the stupid crap you know they're going to do in the future. I saw the trailer for the first time in a movie theater and every second was pure cinematic perfection. I my opinion took a total 180. I was so psyched to see the damn thing and I built it up so much that I probably would have rated it as a "9." That's basically what it is. I just screwed it up by "knowing" it was going to be an "11." You must see this movie. Especially if you saw the first one (like 99% of the U.S. population).
The Rookie (2002)
Good for what it is
I usually don't care for kiddie films but I got the opportunity to attend a free sneak preview of this film. If you liked "Remember the Titans" you'll love this flick. I was very impressed but was bored with the camera shots. They kept using the same shots of pitching since "Rookie of the Year." Some were actually worse.
Quaid did a wonderful job and the movie was rather touching. This just isn't my kind of movie. It was a lot better than I was expecting though. Well worth it if you have small kids.
Fight Club (1999)
Film that still has a brain after it's been smacked silly
I figured this was going to be like a Bruce Lee film, just street fighting style. This is actually unfair to say because I've never seen a Bruce Lee film. Anyway, this movie actually turned out to be heavy intelligent material with twists not obvious to the whole world. I was most impressed that the plot actually had a good reason to base itself around a club in which men just beat each other senseless. I never would have thought of a legitimate plot that could have the basic guidelines of the movie portrayed in the previews.
Happiness (1998)
The struggle toward happiness and how hard it can be to obtain it.
If a summary of the film was read to me before seeing the film, I might not have. Lately, film makers have gone to serious lengths to shock an audience. I brand the movie as tasteless if there's no reason for it. Action movies with blood and gore but missing a plot. These I cannot respect as film art. Some of the most shocking movie scenes I've ever seen come from this movie. All of them seem relevant and important, strengthening the message intended by the makers. Characters do many different things considered taboo. However, it is never graphic. Any shocking physical activity among the cast is totally implied. The actions of the characters are also different from most movies because their behavior is not glorified. Your mind will start to dwell on the horrible things that people do, when you suddenly snap out of it because you realize that these are every day people that have serious problems. The actions would realistically be unforgiven ones. However, you will find your heart aching for an aggressor as much so as a victim. (almost too) True humanity and it's best/worst.

Blazing Saddles (1974)
The non-offensive film that laughs in the face of racism.
People in movement groups have everything wrong. Everyone is so serious and ready to blast anything they see as racial injustice. In this movie, the main character is black and the rest of the people are white. They put him down and racially poke fun throughout the movie. This got a lot of people furious when the movie came out. What they failed to notice was that he was making all the white people appear completely ignorant simple folks that can't see how intellectually superior he is. Lots of racial slurs and comments will offend you, only to make you laugh later at the stupidity of the mouth's owner.
