The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Poorly written and does not makes sense
I'm sure nor the producers, neither the script writers ever read anything from Tolkien. They obviously watched the Jackson's movies as the show is full with fan service related to the movies, but nothing is related to the books. Overall the script has the quality of bad soap opera - most of the time nothing happens, and most of the dialogue does not drive the story, but just fills the time. Like in the soap operas there is not clear story, just things happen. If you think what story delivers the full season - it is not the story of the rings, they appears only in one episode, it is not the story of Galadriel, as nothing really happens with her, she does not change, and her actions has accidental and random consequences, she is a plot driving character, but this is not her story. Most other characters are too minor, and only Adar makes sense. Actually he is the only real protagonist, because he is the only one who performs motivated rational actions driven by clear goals. All others just exist in the series doing random accidental things. Sauron could also be pointed as protagonist. The show breaks completely the lore and instead of luring demigod turns him into random dude screwed by Galadriel - she is kind of antagonist, as all she does lead to disasters, and also her personality is awful. Anyway, there is not clear story to bond the series. And most of the episodes do not have center story too. So the script is bad and also very controversial to the lore. If you did not read the books or watch the movies the script does not make any sense. If you read the books it does not make sense too. It kind of works only if you just watched the movies. The cinematography is in general good. The acting - if you ignore the awful personalities, the meaningless and stupid dialogues and the lack of characters development, the acting is good, not great, but not bad. The costumes are all over the place. Some, like the plastic armors of Numenorians are terrible. Some costumes are inspired by Ancient Greece and simply do not fit. Other costumes are good. The action choreography is mediocre. The CGI visual effects are very good.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part IV (2022)
This show is a scam, it is not about Obi-Wan Kenobi
They didn't even bother to write a new script for this episode, and it's obviously very difficult to them, they just copied the cut scenes from the game Jedi: Fallen Order. Otherwise, this attempt of a Walt Disney series is so dumb that it's not suitable even for children. And no, the series is not about Obi-Wan Kenobi, the name is just a hook for the fans. Kenobi is a depressed incompetent cowardly loser who plays a secondary role in the series named after him. The main characters is Riva, freshly invented, and terribly written and directed.
I was exited about this show, as Obi-Wan Kenobi is beloved character. Noble hero. Wise Jedi knight. The protector of Luke. The true nemesis of Vader. This character is one of the core stones of the Star Wars universe. As important as Luke, Leia, Yoda, Han Solo, Vader and Palpatine.
So I started to watch the show with excitement. But it is bad, really bad. Bad script, bad dialogue, bad action, bad pacing, bad costumes, mediocre CGI, terrible acting. Still, all that makes it just bad, not a scam.
After the first episode I realized this show is not about Obi-Wan Kenobi. So I assumed they used the name as bait. I decided it is a children show about young Lea. Fine I thought. I will watch it with my family. The children of my cousin and my mother will like it. Although it is bad, it is kind of fine for show for children.
But after third episode I realized it is not even that. It is a show about some freshly invented character called Riva. And that turned the bait into a scam. Anyway it would be still watchable, if that new character was well written. But she is not. Riva's character arc is obvious. Riva's actions are literally stupid. Riva's dialogue is dump. Riva is poorly directed, in a poorly directed show. The fighting choreography is simply terrible. I would blame the actress, but this show made even Ewan McGregor to look like terrible actor.
Now it is obvious what will happen - Riva was the tall girl from the intro. Obviously she is corrupted by Vader. But now thanks to Leia will have catharsis and will become a good Jedi again. I even dare to guess she will defeat Vader, because why not? Obviously from Lucasfilm have not any respect to their own IP called Star Wars.
Then I read about the racial insults against Moses Ingram. Well I doubt the issue is her race. She became a face of a scam. It is not her fault. She is just an actress. Still as she is the face of that terrible scam called Obi -Wan Kenobi, it is pretty normal people to be angry to her, and to insult her at every possible way. She is the easy, soft target. As the real scammers are executives of Lucasfilm, so the CEO Kathleen Kennedy and the producer of the show Deborah Chow.
Don't Look Up (2021)
This is the best movie I watched since the Green book
Don't look up is a smart movie. Certainly it is not a comedy. Eventually a satire, but rather a tragedy of the human selfishness. Many people cannot like it because they see themselves. And to clarify, selfishness means to think for yourself. It's not necessarily a bad thing. However, in order to have dreams, you have to think about the others, and to see the world. Selfish people just see and think for themselves. They don't want to fly to Mars, or to find a cure for cancer, they want a new car, clothes, etc., and they think others must care about that. Selfish people are focused on the little manageable things, they don't want to think about the big things, they even deny them. That is why selfish people are easily manipulated not to look up. Great movie. It is not for entertainment. It is not made on the MCU conveyor. Don't look up has the goal to make you think. It is not left or right, although the right side tends to be more selfish. You have Hilary Clinton's character for president of US, supported by the Trump's voters. And specially in US many people want some kind of happy end, like if the end is happy that will somehow erase all the bad things. But Don't look up does not give that release. As again, the goal is not to entertain you, the goal is to make you think, to break the walls you made in your mind. And with brilliant actors, flawless play, and thoroughgoing script Don't look up fulfills completely that goal. If you do not want to think, better do not watch it.
The Witcher: Family (2021)
This is not the The Witcher adaptation, and it is worse
The issue with that entire season is, it goes away from the original story, very far away. And they do not replace the original story with better one, but with generic fantasy nonsense. It looks good, but nobody has any real progression or motivation. Things happen for the look. And again, why they call it The Witcher and all original character names, when they make completely different story? This is not adaptation, as in many aspects it is controversial to the books and even to the games. It is not terrible show, kind of generic fantasy. But it is simply not The Witcher.
The Witcher: A Grain of Truth (2021)
This is actually quite impresive episode
This episode is really good. There is action, moral dilemmas, lack of good choices, so the classical Witcher's lesser evil cases. The episode does not follow the novel exactly, but it does not go too far away. This is excellent start of the second season.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (2021)
This is terrible actually
This is terrible actually. They just filled some time to show us the end - wow this is Gerald. The character arc is almost flat, for all characters. Vesemir suddenly turns good, maybe, after he was greedy cold blood killer with flashbacks, who is talking alone. Flashbacks Vesemir - young greedy boy in love. Older Vesemir - old greedy boy in love, but also crazy selfish sociopath. His beloved girl - granny, was there just for emotional support and to die. The main antagonist pseudo Yennefer was out of any established lore. Also she had some kind of motivation to be evil, because witchers are evil, so maybe she is actually good. I'm not sure. The witchers in this movie are actually very, very bad guys. The king is idiot. The support antagonist is some mix of Japaneses nine-tailed fox spirit, elf, and vampire? Amazing mutation, or written by someone who never played the games or read the books. The black nobles? OK, why a nobleman will travel alone with his family? How a black man became a noble in Northern kingdoms? Probably this is more meaningful story. We will never know as black family was there just for the color. The plot twisted antagonist - Deglan is cold blood killer greedy sociopath like all the witchers in this movie, so the twist is kind of vague. His motivation is to create more monsters, but then all these monsters like army attack Kaer Morhen, led by Japaneses nine-tailed fox spirit mutant. So yeah, monsters also have some kind of motivation probably. Anyway I do not really care as all who died were greedy sociopaths, crazy sociopaths and one support character. Some 5th grader could write a better script for sure.
