The Punisher (2017)
Good enough to see 2x
This is my second viewing. I rarely watch a show twice, but something about the Punisher tv series is so well done, it brought me back. The acting and writing are excellent. The action scenes are good. But I suppose it's the story itself -- of an essentially go man fill with rage and a need for vengeance -- that's compelling. The different movie versions are good too - but I like the tv series for developing a thorough back-story. All the characters are well-developed and demonstrate ambiguity and nuance. It's really a modern morality play, with numerous characters facing both an inner and outer struggle simultaneously. And as in real life, it's never quite certain if good will win - or even where good and evil end and begin. The moral ambiguity is good. The character of Dinah is excellent, and in a sense the show is her's as much as Frank Castle's, as she is heroic in the pursuit of justice.
Das letzte Land (2019)
Slow but worth seeing if you like bleak hard SF
I sped it up to 2x speed, which solved the slowness. The story was good. It reminds me of Moon and other bleak hard SF films that show the loneliness of space and the human condition. If mankind ever does get into space, this is probably what awaits us: unliveable planets, isolation, fear, loneliness, a longing for a home world, difficult comrades, failing technology. Don't watch this if you need cheering up or laughs. But if you like dark or hard SF with ambiguity and deeper themes, it's good. The original is German but I managed to find an English dubbed version.
Les filles du soleil (2018)
One of the most moving, powerful and inspiring films ever
I simply cannot understand this film ever getting a bad review. It was expertly written, directed, and acted. And its subject matter told the truth about one of the worst human rights violations of modern times: when Daesh/ISIL invaded and murdered parts of Iraq and Syria, killing men and turning women and girls into sex slaves for profit.
Their truth is told through this powerful film about a group of Kurdish women turned freedom fighters who fight for the freedom of women and children against terrorists. The leader, Bahar, is a powerful and inspiring woman who has lost her entire family and village to Daesh. I was moved to tears numerous times through the film but also inspired by the triumph of the human spirit against unbelievable adversity.
This is one of the best war films and films about women ever made. Yet a film critic named Agnes Poirier wrote a bad review of it in the Guardian. Since nothing she said in the review is true I can only guess that her criticism was politically motivated in favour of Islamism, which has allies in France and England and among naïve Leftists. Perhaps the Guardian didn't want people to see the truth about Daesh?
I truly cannot understand that shameful review, which negates the truth of what those women have been through. Shame on that film critic. It's a slap in the face of women who were raped by Daesh, whose truth is told by Sisters of the Sun.
Shame on Agnes Poirier for that drivel. There's even a line in the film about how people in France don't want to know the truth -- which seems to apply to apologists for Islamism. And thank you to Eva Husson for making one of the greatest films ever made.
Sh'at Neila (2020)
Great tv show about the Yom Kippur war
This is a show that will appeal to people who lsrael (as I do). It portrays the defense of Israel during the Yom Kippur war through the eyes of a few characters who were at the front. It's compelling and addictive. It shows errors such as friendly fire and commanders ignoring warning signs of immanent attack, but it also shows heroism and courage by several soldiers. It's well written and produced and acted.
