The Loved Ones (2009)
Classic aussie horror
The Loved Ones is an Australian classic horror. It focuses on a girl called Lola that is set for revenge when her invitation to the prom is rejected by a boy called Brent. So instead, Lola and her very disturbing father decide to throw their own prom including Brent where Lola is the queen and must pick her king. Completely shocking, eye-opening and mesmerizing - The Loved Ones is a contemporary horror with stunning cinematography that will keep you gripped from beginning to end. If you are a classic horror lover, this is one for you.
The Slumber Party Massacre (1982)
Classic Slasher
The directing and writing in this movie is meta amazing for a slasher film. Sure we have had great slashers before and after, but to have a slasher written and directed by women is awesome. The acting was awesome. I had no problem with any bad acting at all in the film. The storyline was great and I really enjoy the fact you don't know much about the killer himself. It leaves him dark and somewhat a mystery. The girls in the film seemed for most part to have their own personalities, but you did have the somewhat mean girl who didn't like the new girl. I love some scenes including the pizza scene in the film. Overall, awesome movie itself.
Initiation (2020)
Smarter than it comes off
I enjoyed this. It's not Scream but it at least tries to come off as a modern day "scream-type" of meta movie. It goes for suspense over the usual tired slasher genre meta jokes ala The Final Girls, scary movies. It plays it straight & and the college drama is quite realistic for the genre... though it successfully addresses the sexual assault theme, it starts on gets a bit muddled towards the end. It'll be interesting to see how it plays on second viewing.
Black Christmas (2019)
Not as bad as everyone says
The movie kept real tension with me (which isn't easy with how many horror movies I've watched over the last couple weeks) because of the amazing work the cast and crew did making these characters and this world come to life. The kills had the callbacks you'd expect but it was at least done tastefully so that people who haven't seen the first movie wouldn't be confused or disappointed with those kills anyway. I thought this reboot was a really fresh take on the original that is unafraid to have a take and stand behind it. You'll have a great time if you like the idea of taking down statues of confederates, slave-owners, and/or genocidal colonialists.
