Garrison (2008)
A very underrated film
I really wish more big budget films was like Garrison. It was a very entertaining film, no Oscar winner to be sure but still very entertaining with a good story and decent acting for a bunch of unknowns. Also it captures the feel of military life I think as well. Maybe because i'm a vet, i'm biased but I think the film did a great job of that. For any veterans I DEFINITELY recommend. Even for people who have never been in the military I think they'd enjoy it. It was based off the 2002 Fort Benning murders and I think it handled the sensitive subject matter very well while still making it an interesting mystery film to watch. Overall a not a bad 1 hour and 25 minutes spent for me. Definitely a recommend.
Flight of Black Angel (1991)
Great Film
Flight of Black Angel is easily a great film because it relies on storytelling and characterization rather than special effects to get its point across. It's low budget but I think that is what works in the movie's favor. It doesn't have to rely on whiz-bang special effects. William O'Leary is awesome as the psychotic Air Force pilot who's slipped a gear and decides to carry out God's will and Peter Strauss plays it straight and to the point as his mentor trying to stop him. The story is very believable and hooks the audience instantly. Easily one of the best films i've ever watched from a storytelling aspect. If this movie had a bigger budget, I could see it winning some awards.
Recon 2022: The Mezzo Incident (2007)
I give it a solid C for creativity
Personally I enjoyed this movie and it's sequel ( I haven't seen the first one yet). Yeah it's a B movie but nobody ever said it was supposed to be the next Dark Knight. It's a B movie and never apologizes for what it is. It's low budget with no name actors and not so special effects. Despite all this, they do a good job trying to bring the story to life and making you somewhat care about the characters. After the debacles that were Star Trek, Wolverine, Terminator Rise of the Machines and Transformers, Those movies make Recon 2022 look like James Cameron's Aliens. The bad thing was that those movies had multi-million dollar budgets and big name actors! That's another rant for another time though.
The best character in this movie is Dr. Anderson. Putting a Gynecologist as the company's medic is a stroke of comedic genius and the actor plays the part to a sleazy hilt. No i'd never pay to see this in a theater but it's nice to have on Netflix. Nothing wrong with a good B movie you can laugh at and just enjoy for what it is, a movie for a slow Friday or Saturday night that you can laugh at. On that note, I can't wait to see what happens in Recon 2024!
Underground (2007)
Great Martial Arts Flick!!! Who wants it more?????
This is hands down one of the best martial arts films i've ever seen. Great mix of action and story. Whoever is saying that this movie is horrible or has a bad script obviously watches movies to get the meaning of life or thinks Never Back Down was a great martial arts flick and worthy of replacing Karate Kid and watches movies for the meaning of life and not to be entertained! Not only is this movie entertaining but it's engrossing. Every fight means something and the director did an awesome job of making the viewer care about the characters and the story.
I honestly had no idea who was going to win at the end. Unlike almost every Hollywood flick that pits fighters in the movie for no reason at all and therefore made the movie predictable, I actually was shocked at the ending. England had it right to cast REAL MARTIAL ARTISTS in Martial Roles instead of actors who had a month of training and then having the audience believe that they could sell a fight scene! You would figure with Hollywood with their multi-million dollar budgets would think to cast martial artists for marital arts films! Maybe we have abominations like Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li and the abortion, Dragonball Evolution coming out soon.... Hollywood continues to rape my childhood with just those two movies, I won't even go into the other movies *Cough Transformers Cough*
Not only that, the martial artists had more heart, facial expressions and depth than most Hollywood actors i've seen lately! The fights are semi-realistic with enough film flair to make it interesting and keep me in the perspective that this is a MOVIE and the characters are given great back-stories so that they aren't nameless, faceless cannon fodder.
