Carry on Abroad (1972)
classic carry on
chaos ensues on a mediterranean holiday resort when a party of mostly sex-mad Brits arrive on a package holiday in one of the best films in the series. Joan Sims is the ultimate nagging wife, with Sid James as her lecherous husband, Kenneth Williams gives a fine performance as the holiday rep and Peter Butterworth and Hattie Jacques are hilarious as the hotel owners. The jokes come thick and fast, and the final scenes are truly memorable. A classic.
Carry on England (1976)
Give it a miss
This, the 28th carry on movie is not quite as terrible as everyone says, but certainly has much less appeal than the earlier films. The hugely talented Joan Sims is given very little to do, although Kenneth Connor and Windsor Davies make a good double act as the commanding officers. With few of the regular cast, a weak script and laboured jokes this is a carry on in name only. If you watch it a couple of times, it does get funnier, but on the whole this is a huge disappointment to fans of the series like me.
Carry on Camping (1969)
A British comedy classic
85 minutes of pure fun, which is not, unlike much of today's comedy ruined by political correctness. Innuendo, double-entendres and slapstick are the order of the day here as two friends- Sid James and Bernard Bresslaw-take their prudish girlfriends- Dilys laye and the incomparable Joan Sims- on a camping holiday to try and loosen them up. There are hundreds of things to recommend- the famous exercise scene with the lovely Barbara Windsor, Portly Hattie Jacques trying to seduce camp Kenneth Williams and an all too brief cameo by the gorgeous Valerie Leon as a shop assistant to name but a few. Some of the humour may be predictable, but overall, this is a quality movie.
Carry on Up the Jungle (1970)
A good way to spend an hour and a half
A spoof of the tarzan films, this a very funny and entertaining movie. Not quite up to the standard of carry on up the khyber, but nevertheless the cast all give great performances, especially the wonderful Joan Sims who plays Lady Evelyn Bagley. The film seems a little disjointed at times, but there are enough jokes and innuendo to sustain it - Frankie Howerd has some particulaly memorable lines-"I'm flabberghasted, my ghast has never been so flabbered" and like all the carry on films is very likeable.
Carry on Up the Khyber (1968)
cream of the crop......
Of all the 30 carry on movies that were made, this is the cream of the crop. Sid James and Joan Sims are the stars of the show as the hilarious Ruff-Diamonds and Charles Hawtrey is also good as the camp, cowardly private Widdle and Angela Douglas, playing Princess Jelhi,is gorgeous. The film is consistently funny throughout, particulaly the climatic dinner party scene with the British carrying on with their meal, despite being under attack from thousands of angry Indians. A must see movie.
