La science des rêves (2006)
Stephane, the Most Explored Character in Cinema.
One problem that a lot of people had with this film is that they felt that the character Stephane wasn't a very complex person. People who I show this movie to will gawk at it and later tell me about how much of a douche this Stephane guy was. And, I have to admit, he was very crazy and he had many psychological and emotional problems. Through the movie, he seems to always be pulling people toward him and then pushing them away. He's always looking at himself through his fictional "Stephane TV", never taking charge of his persona in the outside world. As a boy similar to Stephane, I find more and more that I'm living out the plot of "La Science des reves". It is very difficult to explain, but from Stephane getting his calendar submission turned down to him ramming his head into the door of Stephanie's empty apartment during a psychotic episode, I feel like the character Stephane and I (as well as two friends of mine filling the spots of Zoe and Stephanie) have everything in common, and that his character couldn't have been more eloquently portrayed. The only problem I had was Gael Garcia Bernal didn't seem right for the role.
Bijo no harawata (1986)
Atrophy
This movie, I would like to say, was completely great. I can see how many people would think that it's just a shocker film. This isn't completely untrue, but it's as much of shocker fiction as Chuck Palahniuk's books are. One of my favorite movies of all time, Bijo no Harawata is a certain type of crudely made movie that you can have just about any reaction to. It's scary, funny, silly, gross, full of off-the-top material and to some people, arousing. The fist time I saw this, it was with my friend, and his mother had brought it home for him to see it. He said it was just some screwed up Japanese movie, but I saw so much more of it. It's badly made, yes, but it has a certain type of poignancy as to be beautiful, too. As the Director says himself, this is a shocker movie made for a certain reason. Its like atrophy. If you leave audiences soft, then the entire human race is going to be soft. I think this is a good philosophy, and I agree with it one-hundred percent. Bijo no Harawata is the type of movie that gang rapes the hell out of fitness, yogurt, and all of this new-wave stuff.
