The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
Not that scary, more of a movie explaining why the scary happens
I don't like watching scary movies because you gain nothing from the movie except be scared. This movie is not that scary, it has a predictable scare, but the movie is more focused on explaining why the scary happens rather than just simply scare you with the unexplainable. In simple terms, someone is possessed, a couple (The Warrens) finds out it's because of a curse, so they go in search of why someone is doing this curse and who the person doing the curse is. Apparently this movie was based on a true story; web search for Ed and Lorraine Warren as well as Arne Johnson.
POTENTIAL SPOILERS:
The Warrens goes to visit a priest that studies the occult. They ask him, "What I don't understand is why? Why would someone target this family?". The priest explains, "The "why" is irrelevant. The "why" is counter to everything that the Satanist stands for. His sole aim is chaos. His nectar is despair." This to me means the person doing the curse is doing it to get chaos and is powered by the despair it brings. That's your why.
Towards the end of the movie, we find out the curse needs 3 victims to be complete. The child, the lover, and the body of God to represent Purity, Love, and Faith. That is why you see the child get possessed first and than David (the loving boyfriend) was next.
SPOILER: the person doing the curse is the secret daughter of the priest (the one that studies the Occult for some years) whom the Warrens consulted for reference. The priest said his studies influenced his daughter to become obsessed in that area. Now we know who did it and why.
Murder Mystery (2019)
Ridiculous funny movie
Watch this If you are looking for a ridiculous funny movie. I came to watch this movie because of Luis Gerardo Méndez; I saw him in Half Brothers and liked his acting so much I wanted to see him in other roles. In this movie the title roles go to Jennifer Aniston (who did a phenomenal job) and Adam Sandler. These two go together so well to make this movie funny. As you can guess from the movie name, the plot is like Clue: someone gets killed, we have several suspects each with a motive to kill, so who did it? The title characters were accused of being the main suspects, so to prove their innocence they investigate who is the real killer. There is a plot twist at the end and the killer is someone you would never guess.
Cruella (2021)
Not as depressing or dramatic as the trailer portrayed
This movie turned out to be interesting to watch and not as depressing, dark, or dramatic like the movie trailer portrayed. Emma Stone did an excellent job in the title role. I especially love the scenes of her crashing her boss's entrance in various outrageous manners that is quite a sight to behold. There is a plot twist towards the middle to end of the movie that will surprise you. I read somewhere that Cruella had a boyfriend in the band which was not shown in this movie, but there was a band playing scene. After the band playing scene her childhood friends were seen walking away unfriending Cruella which I didn't understand why; something about her making new friends or being another person. The movie didn't elaborate on this so it was confusing what led to this. Other than that this movie was worth watching.
Half Brothers (2020)
Missing scenes that would offer answers
After watching this movie I'm still sitting with questions on why Renato's dad left his Mexico family to be with the American family that he had a mistaken one night stand with. It's just illogical and doesn't make sense. Not to mention if Renato really hates his half brother it makes no sense for him to rescue him towards the end after leaving him behind. The movie must've cut out a lot of scenes that would've answered these questions. Beside these illogic, Luis Gerardo Méndez really stood out in his title role for this movie, very funny as the guy that hates America. In this movie he comes from Mexico and in real life he comes from Mexico, too. His English accent is charming and whoever casted him for this role picked it well. The other half brother did a good job as well portraying a weird person. I would say about 30 to 35% of this movie was in Spanish so expect to read English subtitles if you can't speak Spanish. The plot is original and kind of interesting as you are led on a journey following riddles left by Renato's dad to find out why he abandoned his Mexico family and stayed in America. The ending was a happy ending, as you can predict. It's a nice, funny movie.
Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)
Well made and portrayed really disturbing killers
Although the movie was well made and there were no boring points, I felt like the story was predictable and unoriginal like I've watched this type of storyline from somewhere before. Angelina Jolie's role doesn't stand out despite having the title role. The minor role for the badass black pregnant lady stood out more than Angelina Jolie did. The antagonists also stood out as very disturbingly heartless killers. It was an okay movie to watch to pass time but not something I would watch again. I gained nothing from watching this movie.
